We will also accept an IELTS test taken within the last 2 years where the overall score is at least 6 and where the score for each strand is 5.5 or higher as equivalence to English GCSE. In some cases other qualifications or work experience will be considered. All entrants must hold a first degree of a United Kingdom Higher Education Institution or equivalent qualification. The qualifications achieved or expected should normally be a 2:2 or above.

Our Entry Criteria For Secondary Courses: Academic qualifications achieved, or expected, will normally be a degree of a 2:2 or above, or equivalent in the same, or a related subject. In some cases it may be possible to consider graduates with degrees in subjects not directly related, providing that the content of the entrant s previous education or work experience provides the necessary foundation for work as a teacher in the subject(s) they are to teach. Red Kite Teacher Training will accept applications to our Maths courses from candidates who have an A-Level in Maths or Further Maths at grade B or above, together with a degree in a related subject and for our Physics course with an A-level in Physics at grade B or above, again with a degree in a related subject. In most cases such applicants will be required to complete a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course prior to commencing training. Modern Language applicants are required to have a degree in the appropriate language, or a degree in which the appropriate language is a significant element. Native speakers of French are exempt from the requirement to have a degree in the main subject but must have an acceptable, alternative degree. Native speakers of Spanish or German must hold a qualification in French to at least A-Level equivalent. All applicants will preferably hold a qualification in a second Language which is equivalent to GCSE grade C or higher but this is not essential. Where an applicant does not have a second language they will be required to complete a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course prior to training. Desirable Criteria Primary with Maths applicants are required to demonstrate a particular strength or interest in Maths either though qualifications in Maths at A Level or beyond or though prior work experience. For our PE courses a 2:1 or above is preferred and applicants should possess at least one A Level in an EBacc subject at grade C or above (preferably in Science or Maths). School Experience To apply you must have a minimum of 5 days work experience in a UK state school. You should observe lessons, speak to students and meet with current trainees, NQTs and practising teachers. This will also help you decide if teaching is the right career choice for you. Red Kite organise School Experience days at our partner schools. Visit the events page on our website to find out more.

Primary Course Structure Induction This is an opportunity to get to know your Progress Leader and fellow trainees and to find out more about your training year. You will meet trainees who have just completed their training with us and have a chance to benefit from their experiences and advice. Placements Your training begins in your home school on the first day of term in September. You will be immersed in school life for the Autumn Term, gradually building up the amount of time that you teach. From January you move to your second placement school and experience a contrasting environment. In March you will return to your home school to teach a different class. This means you will be supported by a mentor that you already know well and who understands the progress you will have made. Mini Placements A range of placements will give you a unique opportunity to broaden your experience in a variety of schools and contexts. Red Kite Professional Development Your training will be based at one of our Hub Schools. We place a lot of emphasis on developing your subject knowledge and pedagogy so that you can feel confident to teach all subject areas and in particular Maths, English and Science.

Our Primary Schools Our Primary schools are located in and around Leeds, Harrogate and Skipton and offer contrasting experiences during your placements from small rural to inner city schools.

Primary Testimonial Alex Whitelow Western Primary School NQT Red Kite Initial Teacher Trainee I had been a teaching assistant for two years when I decided I was ready to train to be a teacher. Red Kite had been recommended to me, as you were training within a school setting, whilst getting your PGCE awarded by the University of Leeds. Starting the course in my placement school from day one, meant that I was treated as a member of staff and I was integrated into school life, which gave me further insight into life as a teacher. The workload was my main worry, however, there is lots of support from Red Kite staff, University staff and your fellow trainees. My placement schools were excellent, I always felt a part of the team, not just as a student but as a teacher. Advice and support was always readily available, whenever I needed it, from any member of staff. I really enjoyed my teacher training and I would encourage anyone who is thinking about applying to do so.

Primary Testimonial Louise Miller Silsden Primary School NQT Red Kite Initial Teacher Trainee The Red Kite programme is one that promotes a hands on approach to teacher training, giving me all the experience of working within a school environment from day one. This meant I was able to observe class teachers setting those all-important expectations in the classroom; from class behaviours to standards in children s books. This was an experience that has proved invaluable for setting my own expectations with my year 3s. This route into teaching is not without its challenges, but you are surrounded by professionals within your placement school and during the training days at one of the Red Kite hub venues. The training days are led by practicing teachers, from across the Red Kite schools, who can pass on their experience and expertise to a new generation of teachers. When I came towards the end of the course and it was time to start applying for jobs, I felt confident that the knowledge and skills I had acquired during my training year would come across in interview. I was thrilled when a job came up at a local school in the Alliance, so I submitted my application at the end of March and on the 6th of April, after an indepth interview process, I was offered a job as a year 3 teacher.

Secondary Course Structure Induction At induction you will meet your Progress Leader and fellow trainees. On this day, you will have the opportunity to speak to trainees from our previous cohort and benefit from their experiences and advice. Our induction day is held prior to the summer break. Placement One This will begin on the first day of the Autumn Term when you will spend 3 days a week in schools. The other 2 days a week will be with other trainees following our highly supportive taught programme. Placement Two Your second placement, beginning in February, will develop your practice in a contrasting school. The majority of your time will be in school, supported by further taught Red Kite sessions. Your teaching timetable will increase throughout the year to best prepare you for the challenges of your first teaching post. Both placements will enable you to teach, analyse and reflect on the effectiveness of your lessons. Mini Placements A range of mini placements will give you a unique opportunity to broaden your experience in a range of schools and contexts. These will focus on national priorities such as behaviour management and supporting pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Red Kite Professional Development Our high-quality training programme models outstanding teaching and our pedagogical sessions will provide practical tools to support your developing teaching practice. You will also take part in subject specific professional development days to enhance you understanding of the curriculum, assessment and teaching strategies in your specialist area.

Our Secondary Schools Our Secondary schools are located in and around Leeds, Harrogate and Skipton, allowing you to experience contrasting schools during your placements.

Secondary Testimonial Luke Davies Lawnswood School NQT History Red Kite Initial Teacher Trainee Red Kite Teacher Training has prepared me in the best possible way to be an NQT. From being on placement on day one, I felt like a member of staff and not just a trainee. The diverse placements and mini placements allowed me to visit a range of schools and helped me to decide on a school which was suited to me. Training with other trainees from a range of subjects gave me the support on a daily basis, but I always knew I could call Red Kite at any time. The subject pedagogy days also allowed me to discuss any issues with like-minded people. The University aspect of the course allowed me to reflect on my teaching from a theoretical basis. The Red Kite Alliance is much more than just teacher training, and the fact you are part of a hub of schools, definitely allowed me to secure my first teaching post.

Secondary Testimonial Ishrat Shariq Roundhay School NQT Chemistry Red Kite Initial Teacher Trainee Training with Red Kite Teacher Training has allowed me to work alongside outstanding and inspirational practitioners and experience a range of schools. I received excellent and high-quality training on key areas e.g. behaviour management, Science pedagogy, teachers wider responsibilities, meeting the needs of all learners and pupil progress, to mention but a few. This has extensively prepared me for my current NQT year, as I am now confidently and successfully teaching a whole range of classes at Roundhay School an outstanding Red Kite partnership school I feel very happy and privileged to be working at. Additionally, training with Red Kite has enabled me to be part of a strong support network which provides continuous, high quality support whenever needed, something which I greatly value and have benefitted from as a Trainee and continue to do so as an NQT.

Finance and Bursaries Course Fees The fee to train with Red Kite is Many Trainees choose to apply for student finance is order to pay their fees with a tuition fee loan. Those who are eligible for a bursary can choose to use their bursary to pay in monthly instalments of 900 from October to July. You can also self-finance using our monthly payment schedule. Bursaries and Scholarships Tax-free bursaries up to 26,000 are available for a range of subjects and if you teach maths you could get 20,000 bursary while you train and a further 10,000 early careers payment. Scholarships are awarded to the most gifted chemistry, computing, geography, languages, maths and physics trainees. You will need a first, 2:1, 2:2, PhD or Master s to be eligible for a bursary or scholarship Full details on bursaries and scholarships can be found on
