FINANCIAL AID How do I apply for financial aid? You will be automatically considered for merit scholarships when you submit your application for admission. To apply for grants, loans and work-study, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) after October 1. The FAFSA is available at fafsa.gov. Elmhurst's FAFSA code is What is the FAFSA? The FAFSA determines your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the minimum amount you will be expected to contribute toward your education. It takes into account your income and assets, your parents income and assets, the size of your family, and the number of your family members attending college. The difference between a college s total costs including tuition, room, board, fees, books, supplies and personal expenses and your EFC equals your need. Most college grants and loans are based on need, while most scholarships are based on academic credentials. What happens after I submit the FAFSA? You will be notified once your Student Aid Report (SAR) is available online. This official document will report the contributions that you and your family are expected to make information that Elmhurst College will use to determine how much and what type of financial aid each student can receive. The College may ask you to verify information before finalizing your aid package, and then you ll receive your award notice. When do I learn if I have received financial aid? The Office of Student Financial Services begins sending out award notices in early December to admitted students applying to our Early Action Program who completed and submitted their FAFSA forms by November 1. The process continues on a daily basis beginning in January as students are admitted to the College on rolling admission and as we receive FAFSA information. If I receive a scholarship from an outside source, will Elmhurst reduce its grants or scholarships? Not usually. If you receive a scholarship from an outside source of $4,000 or less per year, Elmhurst will not reduce its grants or scholarships. I received an academic scholarship from Elmhurst College. Do I still need to fill out the FAFSA form? If you and your family feel that your academic scholarship is adequate assistance to help pay the costs of attending Elmhurst, you do not need to file the FAFSA. However, if you would like to know all of your eligibility from all sources of financial aid, including loans, you must complete the FAFSA each year.

5 Can I receive an estimate of my financial aid eligibility before I apply for admission? Yes. Our Net Price Calculator will give you an estimate of your financial aid opportunities based on information you provide. The calculator, available at elmhurst.edu/finaid, is designed for full-time, degree-seeking traditional students. Can I pay my tuition over time? Yes. The College offers several payment plans to pay your tuition. Additional information about the payment plans may be obtained by calling the Office of Student Financial Services at (630) What happens to my financial aid after the first year of college? We recognize that financing a college education is a multi-year commitment and that family circumstances change from year to year. To respond to your needs, we review your financial aid package each year, based on your most recent financial information. In order to receive a financial aid package each year, you must file the FAFSA on an annual basis. What is the average loan debt of students graduating from Elmhurst? For Elmhurst College students, the average federal student loan debt in 2016 was $24,634. This is more than $4,000 lower than the average debt for students in the State of Illinois. How can I learn more? We are always happy to answer any questions regarding the student financial process. Give us a call at (630) , stop by or make an appointment with a financial aid counselor or visit our website to learn more at elmhurst.edu/finaid. STUDENT COSTS Checklist Apply for admission to Elmhurst College. You have to be admitted to the College before we can award financial aid. Submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid). Approximately two weeks after you submit your FAFSA, you ll receive your SAR a summary of the information in your FAFSA. Be sure to check it for errors. Accept your financial aid offer from Elmhurst.
