2 INFORMATION ABOUT THE PART TIME ABORIGINAL FINANCIAL ECONOMIC AND PLANNING PROGRAM APPLICATION PACKAGE Thank you for your interest in our Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities approved Part Time Aboriginal Financial and Economic Planning Program through the Regional Campuses of Confederation College. Inside this package you will find:, Guidelines for Admission/Acceptance, Part Time Program Schedule, Program Description and Course Listing Transfer Credits and Prior Learning Assessment Recognition, General Instructions for Applying to a Part Time Postsecondary Program at Confederation College, and an Application Form for Admission to a Part Time Program at Confederation College. GUIDELINES FOR ADMISSION/ACCEPTANCE TO THE PROGRAM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Please submit the required documents with your application. 1. Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (U/C), or Open (O) preparation levels. 2. or Successful completion of Mature Student Entrance Requirements 3. or appropriate credits from Academic and Career Entrance Program. Courses Recommended: Grade 11 College preparation Mathematics. ** Any delay in sending documents may impede the processing of your application and could affect your chances of being admitted to the program. Admission to this program is based on a first-come, first-served basis. ** PART TIME PROGRAM SCHEDULE The Aboriginal Financial and Economic Planning Program will be delivered on a part time basis at all the Regional Campuses and through Distance Education. Two to three courses will be offered every semester. Some courses may be available in the daytime, some in the evenings, and some through e learning. Most courses will be delivered through Centra and may be taken from any Regional Campus or Contact North site. Students taking two to three courses per semester can expect to complete the program in approximately 3 4 years. TUITION The tuition fees for the 2011/12 school year are $ per course. Textbooks are in addition to these fees. These fees are subject to change every year. NOTE: You will have a maximum of 5 years to complete this program.

3 ABORIGINAL FINANCIAL AND ECONOMIC PLANNING PROGRAM DESCRIPTION This diploma program is designed to provide students with the necessary skills and expertise to undertake responsibilities, both on and off reserve, in relation to sound financial management and sustainable Aboriginal communities. Furthermore, the program will provide graduates with the expertise to advise in matters relating to financial administration, capital projects, financial planning and marketing. Graduates will have the skills to work in either an Aboriginal specific or a mainstream context and may find employment with a range of Aboriginal specific agencies and institutions, such as economic development corporations. The program consists of the following courses: CS007 Persuasive Writing AC102 Introductory Accounting MC155 Microsoft Office 2007 Applications MA132 Business Mathematics Fundamentals HR131 Human Resources GE028 Aboriginal Economics & Self Reliance AC353 Financial Accounting I FN201 Effective Leadership and Decision Making FN203 Legal and Business Practices for Aboriginal Financial Managers AFM3* Business Law GE Elective AC202 Introductory Accounting II AC230 Accounting Principles CS220 Business Communications AC222 Computer Accounting EC302 Principles of Economics FN202 Federal Legislation, the Indian Act & Related Issues AC458 Management Information Systems AC415 Management Accounting AC453 Financial Accounting II AC454 Finance I FN 401 Aboriginal and Public Sector Accounting AFM5* Values & Ethics in the Aboriginal Workplace or GE Elective AFM5* Placement The Aboriginal Financial and Economic Planning Program is currently undergoing Program Renewal. The specific courses are subject to change.

4 APPLYING FOR TRANSFER CREDITS Transfer credits are awarded on a course by course basis to students applying to or enrolled in Confederation College programs who have earned academic credits outside of Confederation College. Credit is only granted for courses taken at other institutions with a grade of 60%, C or higher. Requests for transfer credits should be initiated prior to June 1st for the following academic year. Successful requests for transfer credit(s) are assigned the grade EX and are not used in the calculation of grade point average on official college transcripts. Receiving transfer credits exemptions may impact your course load and affect your fulltime program status and eligibility for OSAP, sponsorship, or scholarships and awards. Applicants submit descriptive evidence of equivalent learning (detailed course outlines and official transcript of final grades). In all cases, the decision of the Academic School is final. Additional program curriculum information and/or references may be required in some cases. Students can receive transfer credits or prior learning assessment credits for up to 75% of the prescribed Confederation College program curriculum. To graduate from Confederation College students are required to complete at least 25% of their program hours at Confederation College and obtain a cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.00 or higher. Exemptions for courses completed at high school for an articulated Confederation College program are processed at no charge. Secondary school guidance offices have information on these formal agreements. Students who are enrolled in a course who wish to apply for a transfer credit must do so prior to the semester deadline date for course withdrawals (see Calendar of Events for specific date). This process is not intended to be used for internal (Confederation College) course equivalencies for information on this, please speak with your program coordinator or contact Admissions. 5 PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT AND RECOGNITION PLAR is an evaluation of prior learning acquired through life and work experience. It involves the assessment and evaluation of acquired knowledge, skills and attitudes that are equivalent to the learning outcomes of a Confederation College course in order to award credit. Candidates must demonstrate that they have gained the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes through non post secondary experiences in order to use the PLAR process to challenge a course. Assessment is performed using a variety of evaluation techniques designed by a faculty assessor. Learning is assessed on an individual basis. The two forms of assessment are Challenge Process and Portfolio Assessment. Challenge Process: A challenge process is a method of assessment other than portfolio, developed and evaluated by content expert faculty to measure an individual s knowledge, skills and attitudes against course learning outcomes. Examples: Written or oral examinations Essays, research papers, reports, diaries, logs, journals Interviews or role plays Projects, assignments or case studies Performance/skill demonstrations Product assessments or any combination of these processes Portfolio Assessment: A portfolio is a collection of material which identifies, demonstrates and verifies an individual s knowledge, skills and attitudes achieved against learning outcomes of a program of study.
