2 BACHELOR OF THEOLOGY (B.TH.) DEGREE COURSE The Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) program is a degree course that seeks to train committed persons for the ministry of the Church. The course emphasizes Biblical studies, doctrine, history of Christianity, and missions. It also helps integrate learning with practice through the various practical ministry programs during the course duration. 1. Objectives The main objectives of the course are as following: a. To train leaders for the essential ministries of the Church. b. To equip the learner with proper tools for the study, interpretation, and application of Bible in specific life situations. c. To train the learner for effective communication of Biblical message. d. To train the learner in practical implementation of Biblical principles. 2. Admission Requirements a. Completed 18 years of age by the date of application. b. Must have the minimum education qualification of Higher Secondary (10+2) or equivalent. c. Knowledge of the English language. d. Must have a divine call for full-time ministry. e. A valid medical certificate of fitness for higher studies. f. An indication of financial support for undertaking the program. g. Duly filled application form with copies of mark sheets, photographs, and recommendation letters from Christian leaders as required (the original mark sheet has to be submitted on admission). 3. Duration of Study The B.Th. degree requires three years of full-time study as an internal (residential) student in the Seminary. Any exception to this rule should have the prior permission of the Academic Committee failing which the candidate s registration will be terminated. 4. Course Requirements The B.Th. program operates on the semester basis. The academic year consists of two semesters. The program is spread over three years (six regular semesters). The following are the course requirements for the B.Th. degree program: a. Completion of 128 credit hours. Each credit hour is 15 hours or its equivalent. b. Pass 36 courses and complete 3 term papers (2,000 words each). c. Complete 3 months of field education or practical ministry. Page 2
3 5. Ministerial Report a. A candidate will have to go through one month practical ministry under the supervision of a local pastor at the end of each academic session. b. A report of the ministry must be sent to the Academic Office on completion of the practical ministry period. c. The report may be hand-written or type-written and should not exceed 5,000 words. d. The report and a copy of it should be attested by the local pastor. 6. Examination and Evaluation A student is expected to write and pass a written examination to prove his accuracy and range of knowledge of the particular course in order to complete it. a. Grading and Marks 50% points in each course will be required to pass the examination. The final grading shall be as follows: First Class Second Class Third Class Failure A+ (80% and above) B+ (65%) C+ (50%) D (30%) A (75%) B (60%) C (45%) E (20%) A- (70%) B- (55%) C- (40%) F (10%) b. Withdrawal or Absence from Examinations: A candidate who withdraws from the examinations or who fails to take the examinations for which he/she has been entered shall forfeit the examination fees. 7. 4 8. Convocation The Convocation of the Seminary is held every year during the FPCGI Annual Convention at Itarsi. Every student who has qualified to receive the B.Th. Degree is expected to attend the Convocation held after the year in which he/she qualified to receive his/her degree in person. 9. Curriculum The curriculum shall consist of 36 courses, allocated as 6 courses per semester. Each course is evaluated according to credit hours. 6 MASTER OF DIVINITY (M.DIV.) Master of Divinity (M.Div.) is a post-graduate degree offered by Central India Theological Seminary to train Christian leaders in order to meet the modern challenges of ministry. The course emphasizes theology, missions, pastoral ministry, and biblical studies. 1. Objectives a. To train ministers for effective Christian ministry in various contexts of the world. b. To train ministers for effective Christian witnessing among the various people groups of the world. c. To promote inter-disciplinary perspectives for productive confluence of theology and ministerial arts. d. To train ministers for purpose driven practical ministry. e. To provide qualitative ministerial education for edification of the Church. f. To develop the arts helpful in the communication of Christian truths. 2. Admission Requirements a. B.Th. (II class) or its equivalent degree from a recognized institution. b. Any other University degree for admission into Pre-M.Div. on passing the Entrance Test. c. Proficiency in the English language for critical study and reflection. d. A valid medical certificate of fitness for higher studies. e. An indication of financial support for undertaking the program. f. Duly filled application form with copies of mark sheets, photographs, and recommendation letters from Christian leaders as required (the original mark sheet has to be submitted on admission). 3. Course Structure a. Theological graduates (B.Th.) will have to complete 28 courses, 2 ministerial reports, and a thesis in 4 semesters of two academic years. b. University graduates (B.A., B.Sc., or equivalent) will have to complete 42 courses, 3 ministerial reports, and a thesis in 6 semesters of three academic years. 4. Course Duration a. A candidate writing the M.Div. thesis is expected to work under the supervision of a qualified member of the staff of Seminary. c. The thesis must be printed on one side of an A4 sized paper and bound in stiff covers. d. Three copies of the thesis must be submitted to the Dean of Academic Studies on the appointed date of the final semester. e. The length of the thesis shall be about 15,000 words. f. The thesis should be written in the English language. g. The thesis should be the original work of the candidate and must be free of typographical and grammatical errors. h. Quotations and references should be acknowledged in footnotes or endnotes and a bibliography of books consulted should be appended to the thesis. i. In awarding grades for the thesis, examiners will take into consideration the following points: (i) Accuracy and range of knowledge of the subject as demonstrated by the subject-matter of the thesis. (ii) Coherence of the argument. (iii) Originality of thought. (iv) Presentation (format, printing, etc.). j. Abstracts: A candidate shall also submit with the thesis three copies of an abstract of approximately 300 words. The abstract shall be a brief summary of the problem, the methodology followed in the research and the main findings. When a thesis is re-submitted following revision, three copies of a revised abstract shall also be submitted. Page 7
8 k. Prior permission from the Seminary must be obtained before a writer publishes his/her thesis. When published, the author will be expected to deposit five printed copies to the Seminary with due acknowledgement. 7. 11 MASTER OF THEOLOGY (CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY) The degree of Master of Theology (M.Th.) in Christian Theology is a post-graduate degree offered by Central India Theological Seminary. The primary purpose of this program is to train Christian leaders to face the growing challenges of the modern world through application of theological knowledge. The degree is also a preparatory program for advanced study and research at the doctoral level. 1. Objectives The main purpose of the M.Th. Degree program is: a. To train theological graduates in advanced theological reflection, hermeneutics, and praxis. b. To equip the candidates with tools and skills for active and creative confrontation of ministerial challenges. c. To train candidates for theologically sound leadership in various branches of Christian ministry. d. To promote the confluence of divine wisdom and power in a Pentecostal understanding of theology and a Spirit-filled life and ministry of the Church. 2. Admission Requirements g. M.Div. or B.D. (II class) or its equivalent degree from a recognized institution. h. Proficiency in the English language for critical study and reflection. i. A ministerial experience of not less than the aggregate of 12 months over a period of 1-3 years. j. A valid medical certificate of fitness for higher studies. k. An indication of financial support for undertaking the program. l. Duly filled application form with copies of mark sheets, photographs, and recommendation letters from Christian leaders as required (the original mark sheet has to be submitted on admission). 3. Duration of Study The M.Th. degree requires two years of full time study as an internal (residential) student in the Seminary. Any exception to this rule should have the prior permission of the Academic Committee failing which the candidate s registration will be terminated. 4. Course Requirements a. A candidate shall be required to pass 10 courses and a thesis. b. A candidate is expected to submit a thesis of 25,000 words on a theological subject approved by the Dean of Academic Studies. Page 11
12 5. Thesis All M.Th. candidates are expected to take a common research methodology course on thesis writing. A candidate shall submit his or her thesis proposal to the Dean by 2 nd December of the first year of M.Th. studies for approval. Application for any modification of the title must be sent before 2 nd March of the first year for approval. m. A candidate writing the M.Th. thesis is expected to work under the supervision of a qualified member of the staff of Seminary. n. The thesis must be printed on one side of an A4 sized paper and bound in stiff covers. o. Three copies of the thesis must be submitted to the Dean of Academic Studies not later than March 31 st of the Second year of M.Th. studies. p. The length of the thesis shall be about 25,000 words. q. The thesis should be written in the English language. r. The thesis should be the original work of the candidate and must be free of typographical and grammatical errors. s. Quotations and references should be acknowledged in footnotes or endnotes and a bibliography of books consulted should be appended to the thesis. t.
