3 Animal Science Undergraduate Updates Pre-Vet Club Meetings this semester: February 18 th, March 24 th, and April 21 st. All meeting will be held in Gilman 1352 at 6:10 PM. 4 Scholarships Department of Animal Science Scholarships for Undergraduates Requirements: Enrollment as a full-time student (12 or more credits) in the Department of Animal Science for full academic year Animal Science or Dairy Science MUST be your PRIMARY MAJOR to qualify for these scholarships. Minimum Requirement: GPA of 2.0 or above. (Student must not be on academic probation.) Some scholarships require higher GPAs. For scholarships that state a student may qualify for the scholarship in succeeding years, the student must reapply for the scholarship each year. Application Deadline: February 15 th at 10 PM. Application form can be located at For more information, contact Dr. Bundy in Kildee 123E. Pork Industry Scholarship Juniors and seniors who plan to pursue a career in swine production management. Students who seek to attend veterinary or graduate school have an emphasis on swine. Targeting Excellence Scholarship Scholarships will be awarded to both undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an agricultural curriculum at an institution that offers degrees in agriculture. A total of $120,000 will be awarded in 2016 from the applications that are submitted. Scholarship amounts will be based on the program in which the student is enrolled: $1,000 for 2-year programs, $2,000 for 4-year programs, and $3,000 for graduate programs. Preference will be given to students who attend schools in regions where fundraising events were held in The preference regions for 2016 awards are Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Application deadline: March 15, The organization will announce award winners on May 1, 2016, and checks will be mailed on September 1, 2016, after the students submit their enrollment verification. 5 Scholarships Roy J. Carver Scholarship Twenty awards of $5,200 each (renewable for one year) will be awarded for the academic year. Requirements: Evidence of significant social and economic obstacles to attending college full time Graduate or accredited Iowa high school or Iowa resident for 5 years Junior classification in Fall 2016 Minimum GPA of 2.80 Demonstrate financial need on basis of the FAFSA (filed by March 1 st ) Application Deadline: April 1 st. IFAA Winner s Circle Scholarship College-bound Iowa youth active in 4-H and/or FFA livestock and agricultural projects and current undergraduate students may apply for scholarships available from the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA). Applicants must major in animal science or a curriculum in agriculture or human sciences that is related to the agriculture industry. Winners will be announced during the 2016 Iowa State Fair annual 4-H/FFA Sale of Champions on Saturday, August 20th, an event sponsored by IFAA. Winner's Circle scholarship funds come from a percentage of Sale of Champions proceeds as well as Winner s Circle Club donations. New Zealand Calving Internship Where: Matamata, New Zealand When: last week in June to the last week in August Responsibilities: Checking cows Collecting calves Sorting cows who have calved Feeding calves Moving milk to the calf barns Washing calf feed equipment Applicant will need to be able to drive a 2 and 4-wheeler with a tractor. Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) Internship Where: Billings, Montana When: October 13 th 23 rd Interns will have the opportunity to assist in all aspects of event planning and execution for The NILE Stock Show and Rodeo. The Internship program provides the opportunity to gain training and work experience in the livestock and equine industries as well as events based business. Offering four internship opportunities: livestock emphasis, equine emphasis, rodeo relations, and media and communications. 7 Internships Zoetis Internships Summer 2016 Each year, a variety of positions are available for students as interns within the Veterinary Medical Research and Development Division. Internship areas include: clinical research, microbiology, marketing, livestock wellness, food systems, metabolism, and many more. All internships are paid and available to both graduate and undergraduate students. Students can access more information via by selecting careers, then opportunities for students, and finally learn more. 9-month Paid Farming Apprenticeships Where: Rockport, Maine Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) offers two nine-month farming apprenticeships. One is a beef cattle (Belted Galloway) emphasis, and the other is on growing vegetables at the Erickson Fields Preserve. Applicant should have previous farming experience and experience in education youth/consumers. Benefits for the apprenticeships include $1,000 monthly stipend, 2 weeks paid vacation, health insurance, and shared housing. DuPont Pioneer Livestock Nutrition Research Associate Where: Polk City, Iowa Part-time position with approximately hours per week. Willing to work around student schedule. Students must be comfortable working with large animals, including hogs and steers. They must be able to commute to location in Polk City. Neogen Corporation Sales and Marketing Internship When: Summer 2016 Duties: Communicating with customer base Traveling (some overnight) Support of Territory Managers Working at meetings and tradeshows Basic math and computer skills are required and must have a valid driver s license, insurance, and reliable transportation. 8 Clear Creek Ranch Full-Time Where: Burnsville, North Carolina Jobs Full-time positions available. Seasons run from March to December. Responsible for care and maintenance of 50+ herd. Responsible for feeding, mucking stalls, doctoring horses, grooming, saddling, leading trail rides, and entertaining guests during evening activities. Applegate Animals Welfare Specialist Responsibilities: Examining, evaluating, and reporting to management information regarding the animal s health, welfare, and behavior systems Ensure supplies are fully compliant with approved Animal Welfare Manager. Responsible for accuracy and maintenance of audit reports and communication to Animal Welfare Manager Qualifications: Bachelor s degree in Animal or Poultry Science Preferred 3-5 years of work experience with a focus on animal welfare Organized and self-management skills Excellent verbal and communication and follow-up skills Computer skills with Microsoft Office and Outlook Deadline: ASAP. Head Equestrian Director Where: Boone, Iowa Must be 21 years old Responsibilities include leading trail rides, brief riding tutorials, and in-depth riding lessons with youth aged 7 to 17 Design a curriculum that horsemanship camps can use Responsible for 18 horses and the care and upkeep of the riding facility Responsible for implementation of safety procedure and ensuring the riding facility meets all guidelines and expectations Will supervise the Assistant Equestrian Director Deadline: ASAP. 9 Assistant Equestrian Director Where: Boone Iowa Equestrian Program Coordinator Jobs Must be 18 years or older Assist in the care of 18 horses and maintenance of riding facilities and equipment Help design and supplement curriculum with the Head Equestrian Director Assist with pony and trail rides Provide help to the Head Equestrian Director when needed Will work to maintain pastures, ensure animals are led and care for, and maintain safety standards Deadline: ASAP. The Equestrian Program Coordinator is responsible for the delivery of a horseback riding program that is safe, fun, and appropriate for all campers. The coordinator also manages the physical operations of the horseback facilities and equipment. This position assists in achieving the council s overall membership and retention goals. Requirements: Minimum age of 21 years Certification as an equestrian instructor from a nationally recognized organization Management or supervisory experience at a horseback riding facility (at least 6 weeks) Experience working in a resident camp setting And more!
