2 Imagine beginning your college experience in Europe or the South Pacific. At the University of Delaware you can. World Scholars is a unique program of study that encompasses all four years of your college career. For the very first semester of your first year you will fly overseas to study in Spain, Italy or New Zealand. There you will learn at a university selected for its academic rigor, small class sizes and professors who use the city as a site of active learning. As a World Scholar, your education will take place as much outside the classroom as in it. Living in a vibrant city surrounded by natural and historic wonders, you will be introduced to world cultures, languages and perspectives alongside other students who share your interests and spirit of adventure. Beyond your first year, your global engagement continues. The World Scholars Program is distinguished from the Study Abroad Program by an extended commitment to global studies throughout your four years at UD. This is fostered in part by additional studies in one of our globally focused minors, which include foreign languages, international business and public health among others. How to Apply 4 As one of the first colleges in the nation, it is no surprise that the University of Delaware was a pioneer in global studies, creating the first U.S. Study Abroad Program in In the 21st century, our leadership in international education continues. The World Scholars Program is unique among national universities in that it combines UD s innovation in and commitment to global engagement with an integrated four-year course of study that weaves travel and internationally focused experiences into our established curriculum. As a World Scholar, you will build on UD s tradition of exploration and develop into a scholar of global ambition. The goal of World Scholars is to inspire the best UD students to tackle the world s most pressing problems from a perspective of global engagement and collaboration. By the completion of the program, you will be prepared to live and work anywhere in the world. Whether you desire to continue your education as a Fulbright Scholar, serve the global community in the Peace Corps or join the field of international business or foreign affairs, World Scholars will prepare you for success. Students who have a strong academic record and who have been accepted to select majors at the University of Delaware will be invited to apply. Because of the courses offered at the participating universities abroad, only certain disciplines are eligible for the program. When invited, apply over the winter and have your valid U.S. passport in hand by May 1. 5

4 Your World Scholar Adventure Starts Here Welcome to New Zealand Nau mai ki Aotearoa Built on an isthmus between the Hauraki Gulf and the Tasman Sea, the city of Auckland the largest city in New Zealand is surrounded by hills and mountains, sea, rainforests and a constellation of islands that stretch out into the Pacific. At the center of the artistic and economic life of New Zealand, Auckland is a modern and diverse metropolis rooted in its native Māori culture. Here you will study at the University of Auckland,* a comprehensive research institution that specializes in anthropology, earth sciences, literature and Pacific studies. Also offered at Auckland are a range of languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Russian. As the newest addition to World Scholars, New Zealand is now available for you to discover. * Universities in New Zealand begin their fall semesters earlier than U.S. institutions. Students who choose this location will begin their studies in July and will return home in November. 6 7

5 Welcome to Italy Benvenuto in Italia Goethe once called Rome the school of the world, and now it can be your school. You will study at John Cabot University, in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome, within sight of Vatican City. See grand piazzas and Renaissance frescos as you stroll the cobblestone streets on your way to class or to grab a gelato. Be inspired by the relics of the Classical world as you study ancient art and archeology, philosophy, digital photography, comparative politics, and more. Study Italian, Latin or one of the many other languages offered. I learned to appreciate things [in Rome] like the locals appreciate them. 6 Welcome to Spain Bienvenido a España Under the terracotta roofs of Metropolitano and the long shadow cast by the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra de Guadarrama, you ll find St. Louis University, our partner in Madrid. Once the land of the Moors, then the Romans, Madrid is the beneficiary of a blending of Arab and Western cultures. The languages offered at St. Louis reflect that history. Study Arabic, French, Portuguese and Spanish between visiting the Prado and the ancient city of Segovia. St. Louis University offers coursework in international business, science, modern Spanish and French art, Latin music and dance, and more

7 First Year Fall Abroad World Scholars begin their UD experience not on our Newark campus but in a cosmopolitan city abroad. You will choose to study in Rome, Madrid or Auckland for your first semester. There you will enroll in courses taught in English by an international faculty, beginning with Introduction to World Politics. At each university, you will select from classes in the humanities, business, science, languages and the arts. Students room with one another in residence halls and receive advising, support and resources comparable to those offered on the Newark campus. 8 Second Year You will begin your second year as a resident in the International House, our on-campus international living and learning community, where the conversation about intercultural understanding will continue. Institute for Global Studies staff, upper-class mentors and a team of advisors will provide resources and advice to assist you in your growth as a global citizen. Third Year As a complement to your global studies, you will again travel abroad during your third year. Your destination will be based on your academic focus and desired location of study and will include an internship, community engagement or research activity. During this year, you will also be counseled on numerous post-graduate options, like the U.S. Fulbright Program. Fourth Year In your final year as a World Scholar, you will participate in a Spring Scholars Symposium, presenting your research findings, team project or creative work based on your interests and experiences. Come graduation, you and your classmates will be recognized for your accomplishments as UD World Scholars. From there you will embark on a lifetime of global learning. Program Costs & Financing 2018 Fall Semester Abroad Delaware Resident Non-Resident Tuition + $5,935 $15,930 Program Fee (Housing and Dining Fees) $8,300 $8,300 Total Cost to Program* $14,235 $24,230 The chart represents estimated costs (based on school year) for your first semester (fall) of your first year. Tuition charged to World Scholars is the same as that charged to other incoming freshmen at the University of Delaware. Your Program fee includes housing, dining, international insurance, select excursions and activities abroad, as well as resources to support your success provided by UD and our partner institutions. Additional costs not outlined above include round-trip air travel to your World Scholar site, international visa fees, textbooks and school supplies, as well as personal expenses. Note: Financial aid (federal, state and UD scholarships/grants, along with loans) are split evenly between the fall and spring semesters.
