1 MASTERS OF SCIENCE IN HEALTH POLICY & MANAGEMENT SPECIALTY AREAS HEALTH POLICY AND HEALTH POLICY ANALYSIS ECONOMICS AND FINANCING HEALTHCARE HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP, MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

2 COMPREHENSIVE MASTERS IN HEALTH POLICY & MANAGEMENT Our program develops health leaders who can provide solutions to the important issues of costs, financing, delivery and accessibility of care. Such leaders are in high demand across public, private and not-for-profit organizations. They understand today s healthcare complexities, promote effective care systems, champion effective health policies and improve the health of people in their communities and beyond. The HPM program isn t just for scientists, accountants and policy wonks. It draws on the medical humanities and liberal arts as well. You ll learn how the needs of a population affect health; how to consider the concerns of family, significant others and communities in providing patient care; and how to value, support and advocate for an individual s healthcare decisions. SMALL CLASSES & COHORT LEARNING The entering class size averages about 10 to 20 students. This means you explore health policy and management in small, personal cohorts where vibrant interactions occur between students and faculty. You will develop close bonds with your fellow students and forge networking opportunities outside the classroom. COMPETENCY AREAS We train you in three practical professional areas: Health Policy and Health Policy Analysis; Healthcare Economics and Financing; and Healthcare Leadership, Management and Administration. ETHICAL FRAMEWORK Our curriculum supports students need and desire to include ethical and moral reflection in policy analysis and implementation. Classes expose you to complex cultural issues and train you to respond to the needs of various groups. PRACTICUM AND CAPSTONE PROJECT Our mentored practicum program and capstone project help you create an experience portfolio tailored to your career needs, in ways that empower you to champion effective health policies and programs where you work and live. COMPREHENSIVE SKILL SET We draw on the knowledge of information sciences, health communication and health literacy to equip our master s students in the policy analysis and management skills they will need. CONVENIENT, BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS IN THE HEART OF LOS ANGELES Our Doheny Campus is located in the historic West Adams District in downtown Los Angeles, with easy access from both the 10 and 110 Freeways, and with ample student parking. Originally a gated Victorian estate, our campus is beautifully landscaped with tall trees and sweeping gardens, and is dotted with elegant mansions. It s a peaceful and safe academic haven.

3 PATRICIA MURPHY 18 Current Position: Executive director of an assisted living and memory care senior living community Career Goal: To become more involved in policy development for senior services in California and at a federal level I m driven by the desire to improve access to affordable, quality services to seniors and their families. Two semesters into my program, I am already finding the content very helpful in my work world. The policy units in particular have helped me to more effectively identify areas of improvement and implement the roll out of new initiatives in a more effective way. I have also volunteered to lead a review of key organizational policies. This has raised my profile in the organization and helped me gain confidence in my interactions with senior executives and stakeholders. OPPORTUNITY CAREER ADVANCEMENT The program will improve my opportunity for promotion. Senior executives are already seeking out my views about our company policies. POLICY UNDERSTANDING I ve acquired a deeper understanding of city, state and federal health policies. This is helping me to more effectively identify how to address issues that directly impact seniors and their families. PROFESSIONAL CONFIDENCE I m gaining improved confidence and ability to identify and implement improvements in my day-to-day work environment.

4 ANI VOSKANIAN 17 Present Job: Lead Technician in an in-patient pharmacy Career Goal: Administrative work in healthcare I started working as a full-time manager at an in-patient pharmacy shortly after I began the Health Policy & Management program. The program led to my interest in a managerial role, and I was promoted within the company. I went from being a per diem technician to a full-time supervisor of technicians. I ve appreciated the program s small class size, which means that we have excellent communication with our instructors. Also, the program is well constructed to finish with a project that will help me build a professional portfolio. PREPAREDNESS There is not a day in healthcare where you will not be challenging your knowledge or capability. Having a master s degree will make me more qualified and competitive. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS The program is delivered over six trimesters. If you do not have the required prerequisite coursework, you can take an additional preparatory trimester of foundation courses at the Mount (or their equivalent elsewhere). These outcomes will be vital for me as I pursue my professional goal. As a health informatic, understanding the concepts of budget and accounting will be key when working closely with numbers and data. I strongly believe my understanding of healthcare reforms and policies will be of utmost use while working closely with healthcare professionals.
