3 HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE: Maulana Azad College is a premier Government college of West Bengal and has a rich history of progressive development since its foundation on December 9, 1924, when Lord Lytton, the Governor of Bengal, laid the foundation stone of Islamia College. This was a culmination of the sustained efforts of the contemporary Education Minister of Bengal, A. K. Fazlul Haque, and other Muslim leaders like Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury and Sir Abdur Rahim. Formal classes began on nd 2 July 1926 under the efficient leadership of the Principal, Mr. A.H. Harley, who was previously an Assistant Professor of Oriental Languages at Edinburgh University, UK. The primary objective was to promote Islamic learning and general education among the Muslim population in British India. After Independence, the college was renamed Central Calcutta College and its doors were opened to all students irrespective of caste, creed and religion. Professor F.J.F. Pereira took over the leadership of Central Calcutta College as its Principal. A. K. Fazlul Huq The name of the college was finally changed to Maulana Azad College in 1960, in memory of the great national leader, erudite scholar and the first Education Minister of Independent India Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Prof. B.C. Mukherjee (who later became the Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor of Vidyasagar University, West Bengal) was the first Principal of Maulana Azad College. In 1990, the college was declared a coeducational institution. The institution has been affiliated to the University of Calcutta (C.U.) since its inception. 5 FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK The beginning was as Islamia College in 1926 with a modest outlook to educate Muslim boys but in 1947, the institution opened its door for all boys irrespective of caste, creed and religion, as Central Calcutta College. In 1960, the institution was renamed as Maulana Azad College to mark the memory of the great patriot and first Union Education Minister of independent India. Maulana Azad College included girls student within its fold from 1990 onward. Since 1990, the institution has been under the aegis of the state education department and at present it can boast of being the only multi-faculty, co-educational, government general degree college in Kolkata. The institution offers 20 UG courses in the three faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce and three PG courses in English, Zoology and Urdu; the ODL mode operates through IGNOU study centre. A sustained and motivated thrust for development and excellence is revealed from its A grade accreditation status from NAAC, the status of the college with potential for excellence from UGC, DBT-STAR college status from MHRD, Govt. of India apart from prestigious financial supports like FIST from DST, BOOST from DBT, Govt. of West Bengal and a number of research projects funded by different government organizations. We sincerely process a huge number of various scholarships and encourage students through timely notification. The institution has developed a habitual practice of parent-teacher meet, peer visit, alumni meet and many student-centric activities. On behalf of all staff members of this institution, I welcome each and every prospective fresher to the ensuing academic session and hope that our sincere effort will go a long way in transforming this institution into a dynamic centre of quality education, with a keen sense of discipline and human values. 33 Brief Introduction to: POST GRADUATE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH How it grew: The history of the department of English dates back to the year of inception of the college. It is with immense pride that we recall the presence of luminaries in the departmental faculty, like the legendary teacher of English, Prof. Taraknath Sen, the renowned poet Prof. Bishnu Dey, the lexicographer Prof. Gouri Ghosh, the eminent teacher Prof. Kalidas Bose, among others. This heritage is what we, the present generation of teachers in the Rabindra Jayanti Celebration of Department of English department, are trying to live up to and further enrich. The department offers B.A. Honours and General as well as Post graduate academic courses. Exposing students to the aesthetics of English literature and English Language was what the department primarily intended. This tradition has been continued as teachers try to instill in students the skills required for a proper appreciation of literature in students. This emphasis on developing a critical insight is carried out with a simultaneous honing of their language skills. We help to bring out the latent creative abilities of the students through encouragement and guidance. We believe in fostering literary sensibilities and creative imagination and feel that is very important in cultivating a holistic approach to life. The department has an extensive collection of over 200 books in its seminar library; both undergraduate and postgraduate students borrow books from there. This sense of a unified whole is also evident in the composition and nature of our department. Although students from the Muslim community form the greater percentage, students from other communities find no problem in amalgamating comfortably with the others. It is heartening to see how the seeds of communal harmony are being unobtrusively sown as the department unitedly goes on its academic pursuits. The Post Graduate course in English was introduced in the year under the University of Calcutta. Semester system is being followed and sixteen courses are being offered. Continuous evaluation, both internal and external, is undertaken. Students are required to write term papers and dissertations on topics of their special interests. Guest teachers from the University of Calcutta and other Universities are extending their co-operation in this regard. 29

34 What has given an added dimension to the department is its close association with the eminent poet professor Jayanta Mahapatra. The department has successfully completed the translation of his autobiography. Seminars and talks are arranged by the department, providing students with an extensive exposure to the academic world. Professors like Harish Trivedi, William Radice, Tapan Roychoudhury, Jayanta Mahapatra have visited and interacted with our students at various times. Seminars on the poet Bishnu Dey and the dramatist Bertolt Brecht are among those organised by the department in the last few year. Students are also provided with a platform for amateur dramatics and play - reading session. Performances are held occasionally. Education excursions are also organised for post graduate students. So far, six batches of students have completed their post graduation. Among them 8 students have qualified the NET. Promoting the study of foreign languages has been among the objectives of the department. A course in French has been conducted. The Department had signed a Memorandum of Understanding for course development, training and testing of ATCOs in English Language Proficiency with the Airport Authority of India. 36 POST GRADUATE DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY How it grew : Founded in 1996, the Department of Zoology of Maulana Azad College has been one of the leading departments, not only in West Bengal but also in the country. Soon after the introduction of the Honours course, Postgraduate teaching was incorporated from the year This department is now enjoying academic autonomy under the University of Calcutta since It has not only provided up-to-date teaching resources but has also taken the lead in introducing CBCS curricula. Introduction of subjects such as Genetics, Ecology, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Parasitology & Dr. N. M. Basu Memorial Lecture By Prof. S. C. Dasgupta Immunology and Entomology, for the last sixteen years in the Post-graduate teaching curricula, helped to develop the understanding of Biology as a living, growing science. It has kept the department up-front. The growth and diversity in teaching has been made possible by the introduction of a progressive faculty, whose research in diverse spheres have not only added to the knowledge in frontier areas but also created an ambience that stimulates creative research. This level of growth and progress has been possible largely due to the development of technical expertise and the creation of a good laboratory infrastructure from the UGC and State Government grants. In addition, DST-FIST support (2005 & 2010), UGC-CPE support (2010) and DBT Star College Award (2011) to the department have most substantially contributed to the achievements in research and teaching. The scientific merit of the faculty has been recognized from time to time through their publications and patents. The faculty members have been serving as members of different academic bodies and scientific organisations in their domains of expertise. One of the most remarkable strength of this department is the placement profile of its students. The department also has a good alumni association (ALZOOMAC) which gives it an additional support in organizing seminars and an annual reunion meet to bridge the gap between the present and the past students. The tradition of strong training and excellence has been maintained and expanded during the last 13 years. The dept. has also received the prestigious DBT BOOST assistance (2015) from the State DBT. CBCS based Semester based credit transfer has been introduced in this department in Teacher presentation in seminar 32

Hostel In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the Muslim community in Bengal was confronted with many problems. Different sections of the Muslim society such as the Orthodox, the Moderate and the Progressive were not identical in any opinion and each of them viewed the problems of their community from their own perspective. The enlightened and the progressive section of the Muslim society attempted to focus on the backwardness of Muslims, which was largely due to their ignorance and their indifference to studying English and Western subjects. They endeavored to build a public opinion leading to the progress of education and stressed the need for establishing educational institutions of both religious and secular nature. In 1896, the Elliot Hostel was constructed to provide lodging facilities to the students of Sk. Mujibur Rahman Memorial Hall at Baker Hostel 41

46 Calcutta Madrasah and Presidency College. The Elliot Hostel, however, could not cope with the increasing demand for berths by Muslim students, studying in different colleges of Calcutta. In 1908, the Muslim elite of Calcutta examined the problem and placed the govt. a demand of a separate hostel. Nawab Abdul Jabbar viewed it seriously and started a vigorous movement for another hostel for the Muslim students of Bengal, but his movement ultimately failed. To find out a proper solution to the students problem, in terms of residence, the Muslim leaders of Calcutta assembled at the historic Town Hall in 1910, and unanimously adopted a resolution that if the government fails to give immediate effect to their demand, they should initiate the process of constructing a hostel building. Khwaja Sallimullah, the Nawab of Dacca, echoing the sentiments of the Muslims, donated a generous amount of Rs 30,000 for the construction of the hostel building. Following the noble footsteps of Nawab Sahib, some of the elites present in the meeting also contributed for the same. When approached, the Govt. agreed to bear the half of the expenditure and allocated necessary fund for the construction of the building. Thus in 1910, a fascinating two-storied building, consisting of 185 rooms along with a lush green lawn came into existence. This hostel building was named after Sir Edward Norman Baker, Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. After the establishment of the Islamia college (now Maulana Azad College) in 1926, the privilege of residence was extended to the students of Islamia College, coming from the adjoining areas. During the long span of 98 years, from 1910 to 2008, the hostel has greatly contributed in moulding the shape of the nation in one way or the other. This century-old hostel is proud to have provided accommodation to innumerable students who have spread far and wide and contributed richly to all walks of life. Among them is the illustrious names of Bango Bandhu SK. Mujibur Rahman, father of the nation of Bangladesh. We are well aware of the fact that demand for education has increased very sharply among the Muslims in recent years and students from all districts of West Bengal as well as from neighboring states are rushing in for getting admitted in the colleges of Kolkata. But many of them get disappointment because of the lack of hostel and the non-availability of berths in existing hostels. Baker Govt. Hostel, since its inception, has been extending accommodation to 185 students, but owing to tremendous demand for lodging, the authorities concerned increased the number of berths from 185 to 360 in 2004,in the academic interest of the students. Yet the situation did not change as the number of applicants has far exceeded the number of available accommodation and a good number of students are being deprived of the privilege of staying in hostels, thus forcing them either to drop their education or return to their home town. It is our pleasure to report that the In Higher Education Department of the West Bengal Government had taken this matter seriously and asked the PWD Engineers to work out a plan for the construction of an annex hostel building for 200 boarders in the existing campus of the Baker Hostel. In December 2012, the new Annexe building of Baker Government Hostel was handed over to the Principal of Maulana Azad college,to accommodate the students of Maulana Azad College and other Colleges under University of Calcutta. The new Annex Building was named Banga Bandhu Smrity Bhavan to pay the tribute to Sk. Mujibur Rahman, former President of Bangladesh and former Boarder of Baker Government Hostel. Language Laboratory : The Language Laboratory has audio-visual and digital facilities. These equipments have been used in workshops and collaborative seminars with the other departments. For example, a joint workshop was 42

47 organized with the PG Department of Urdu last year. There are plans to organize many such collaborative programmes in the near future. Equal Opportunity Cell : It is a UGC sponsored Center for the students belonging to SC/ ST/ OBC categories. It provides these students with study materials, guidance, computer knowledge etc. Moreover, remedial classes are also arranged for them. It provides equal opportunity to these students so that they would not be the deprived lot. Institution Rules & Regulations : Attendance Rule According to the rules of the University of Calcutta, students failing the requirement of minimum attendance may not be allowed to appear as a regular student in the University Examinations. This rule is strictly followed till third year and is applicable to PG students as well.
