2 Clinical Oncology ST3 Level Self-Assessment Questions Scoring Framework Guidance a) Introduction The scoring framework relates to the Clinical Oncology ST3 Person Specification for 2013 recruitment. The self-assessment tool is used to differentiate between applicants with tied scores at interview and may also be used with the free text responses on the application form to shortlist applicants subject to interview capacity. b) Interview capacity R Round 1: 156 applicants over two days (i.e. 78 applicants per day) All applicants are strongly advised to refer to the following guidance for completion of the application form, with specific reference to the self-assessment questions. Applicants are also encouraged to approach local careers advisors, TPDs and/or Educational Supervisors to discuss completion of the application form, in line with the guidance outlined below. c) Responses and scores allocated Each question allocates a score based on applicant response and, although the individual scores are not revealed for each question, the scoring range is published below and the options for selection are ordered from the highest to the lowest scoring. We would urge applicants to check the guidance for each section and answer as honestly and accurately as possible. Interviewers will check responses against your portfolio. Any inaccuracies that lead to unfair advantage will be taken seriously and could be seen as deception or dishonesty. Misleading or incorrect answers will lead to concerns about probity and may be reported to the GMC for Fitness to Practise referral. Such inaccuracies may result in applicants being rejected. The maximum achievable score is: 30 Where self-assessment scores for candidates are tied, four areas of free text response on the application form have been identified to distinguish between applicants: the cumulative score of Commitment to specialty, Communication and interpersonal skills, Describing a difficult situation, and Leadership role will be used to rank applicants with tied marks. If there is also a tied cumulative score, these areas will be weighted in the same sequence. Once submitted via the online portal, applications cannot be altered: applicants are urged to complete the form accurately and review a printed copy prior to submission because no changes are permitted once application forms are submitted. There is no exception to this rule. Page 2 of 16

3 d) Presentations clarification Presentations listed in the online application form must have been delivered by the candidate and taken place by the date of the interview. Planned presentations that will occur after the interview date do not count. At application, the candidate must upload evidence of completion of the presentation or proof of date of the presentation, e.g. a letter from the conference organiser confirming date of presentation. Evidence that the presentation has been delivered must be provided in the applicant s portfolio provided for the interview. See Applicant guidance for completing section 4 for evidence required. e) Publications Publications must be a paper in a peer-reviewed scientific journal as a first/non-first author and must have been submitted and formally accepted for publication (without any amendments) by the time of application. At application the Pubmed, Medline or EMBASE citation reference should be provided or if this is not available a letter from the publisher confirming date of publication will be required as evidence. See Applicant guidance for completing section 5 for more detailed guidance. f) Oncology Related The term Oncology Related means work or qualifications that are relevant to oncological practice or the sciences that underpin this practice. 12 Applicant guidance for completing section 6 - MRCP Part II The options are as follows: Ref 6. MRCP Part II Score range I have completed both parts of Part Two MRCP (UK) or equivalent 6.2. I have completed one part of Part Two MRCP (UK) or equivalent 6.3. Neither The GMC has ruled that completion of MRCP(UK) is one of essential for completion of CMT and hence it is necessary for applicants to have obtained a minimum of MRCP(UK) Part 1 by time of application to ST3 i.e. by the time they submit an application for ST3. Applicants must have gained - sat and passed - the remaining two parts of the MRCP(UK) examination (Part 2 written and PACES examinations) by the dates set out in the person specification. Equivalent MRCP (UK) Qualifications: A candidate may not have the full MRCP (UK) diploma but their application may progress if they have an acceptable equivalent qualification. The conference of postgraduate medical deaneries (COPMeD) produced some revised guidance on how the equivalence to MRCP(UK) of alternative postgraduate medical examinations will be judged - as follows: 'The only examinations that should be treated as equivalent to MRCP(UK) for ST3 recruitment purposes are: MHKCP (Hong Kong)* MMed Singapore* European (EEA) CCT in general internal medicine can also be considered equivalent. *The Hong Kong and Singapore colleges require full MRCP(UK). MRCP Ireland From 2014, the chief difference from how guidelines on how qualifications entry criteria were applied in previous rounds is that the MRCP (Ireland) examination will no longer be an accepted substitute for the MRCP(UK) for ST3 recruitment purposes. However, candidates whose training to date has been undertaken under the Irish physician training system may still be eligible to apply using MRCPI as their qualifying examination, under the EEA eligibility rule. Other equivalent qualifications: No evidence [is available] to enable [deanery recruiters] to consider any other examinations to be equivalent, and MRCP(UK) is an international examination that is open to all Both parts of Part Two: Applicants should select this option if they have completed both parts of the MRCP (UK) part two or equivalent (see person specification for equivalence), i.e. the full diploma at time of application. Page 12 of 16

13 6.2. One part of Part Two: Applicants should select this option if they have completed one part of the MRCP (UK) part two or equivalent (see person specification for equivalence), i.e. either MRCP Part 2 written of PACES attained at time of application. You will be required to provide evidence at interview that you are booked to sit the remaining elements of Part 2 MRCP by the time set out on the person specification Neither: Applicants should select this option if they have either completed no parts of MRCP(UK) or equivalent, or only completed part one of the MRCP (UK) or equivalent at time of application. Refer to the Person Specification regarding essential qualifications criteria for eligibility to apply. You will be required to provide evidence at interview that you are booked to sit the remaining elements of Part 2 MRCP by the time set out on the person specification. Page 13 of 16

16 Glossary of terms 1. International Level Presentations For a presentation to qualify as international it needs to have been delivered in a country other than your country of residence/education at time of delivery or a recognised international meeting that rotates to different countries, e.g. ESTRO, SIOP. 2. National Level Presentations Presentations delivered on a national level refer to when an applicant has delivered a presentation in the country where their undergraduate education took place, or at their time of residence, e.g. if an applicant delivered a presentation in Sweden whilst undertaking their undergraduate education in Sweden, this cannot be classified as International just because it is outside of the UK: it would be national United Kingdom UK comprises the four nations, therefore presentations within these countries by someone who is residing in the UK is considered national, regardless of the country of residence, e.g. if the presentation is delivered in Wales by an applicant based in Northern Ireland, this is classified as national. 3. Regional Regional refers to presentations confined to, for example, the county, deanery, health authority, or a recognised cluster of hospitals, extending beyond a city. 4. Local Level Presentations Local level presentations are those delivered as part of an institutional process, e.g. at a local trust/ hospital where you have been working, or at an educational institution setting. 28/02/ :09 Page 16 of 16
