Our students come primarily from Tucson s south side, and most are members of the Latino community and various Native American tribes. Established for students from families of limited financial means, the average family income of San Miguel students is $34,000 a year for a family of four. As a Catholic school sponsored by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, San Miguel strives to advance each student s human and Christian education. San Miguel utilizes the corporate work-study model of the Cristo Rey Network. Consistent with this model, all San Miguel students take a full college preparatory course load while simultaneously holding professional internships, working in corporations and earning approximately 40% of the cost of their education. Every student works five days a month at entry-level professional positions and their schedules ensure that they do not miss any scheduled classes. Students gain practical experience and marketable skills working in a variety of professional fields, including law offices, hospitals, banks, insurance agencies, automotive companies, and more. By the end of four years at San Miguel, our graduates are ready to enter a university environment with confidence in their educational preparedness and a determination to succeed in their chosen field. Since the school s opening in 2004, 98% of students have graduated and 100% of graduates have either been accepted to college or joined the military. 2 Corporate Internship Program (CIP) All San Miguel students take a full course load of college preparatory coursework for four years as they participate one day each week in our four-year Corporate Internship Program. This provides unique learning opportunities for our students throughout the city of Tucson by engaging them in entry-level office positions in banking, law, medicine, finance, energy, and many other professional fields. Students are assigned to work at a partnering corporation one full day each week, without missing any instructional time. They earn income that is paid directly to the school in order to offset the cost of tuition. A longer school day and longer school year allow for this additional learning opportunity. This unique combination of classroom learning and workplace learning prepares San Miguel students for success in high school, in college, and in the years to come. This year 98 companies have partnered with San Miguel and are hosting between one and four students in entry-level positions. Student Demographics The cultural and ethnic diversity is reflected in the student body at San Miguel High School. This year the student body is comprised of 373 students. 3 Curriculum and Grading San Miguel High School offers a four-year college preparatory curriculum. Freshmen are placed into flexible groups for differentiated instruction to meet the range of math and reading needs. Additionally students are placed in English Honors and Math Honors courses. 9 Honors Courses AP Courses Calculation and Bell Schedule Six classes meet for 60 minutes a day each. Freshmen students attend seven classes. Passing Grade = D College recommended = C GPA includes all academic classes. Class rank is computed. Valedictorian is chosen in April GPA is based on a 4.0 scale Advanced Placement San Miguel participates in the Advanced Placement Program of the College Board. Dual Enrollment Every year, a number of students enroll in the local community college and take universitytransferable classes for college credit. This year qualified students have the opportunity to attend Spanish 101 and 102 for dual credit. 3

4 Graduation Requirements: Given our size and the Cristo Rey work/study program, all students follow a set college preparatory curriculum. A total of 24 credits are required for graduation, as is participation in the Corporate Internship program. A variety of honors and advanced placement courses are available. Year-long classes are assigned 1 credit; semester-long classes are assigned 0.5 credits. As part of their corporate Internship work, all students have the opportunity to gain work experience in advanced fields such as scientific research, medical assistance, and law. Testing All San Miguel students are expected to take a series of standardized tests. These tests inform both the school and the student as to how they are progressing toward college readiness while others are used in the college admissions application process. 5 Special Programs and Other Educational Opportunities Students are expected and encouraged to attend residential summer programs on four-year university campuses. The counseling office assists students in their selection process and provides extensive lists of all-expense-paid summer programs. 36 % of our senior class attended at least one university summer program. 19 % of our junior class attended at least one university summer program. 4 % of our sophomore class attended at least one university summer program. 4 % of our freshman class attended at least one university summer program. In May 2016 we celebrated our ninth graduation.
