2 The New s Academy, a special leadership opportunity designed for new AASCU presidents and chancellors, is responsive to the needs of the position and the person. The emphasis of the Academy will be on the establishment of a strong presidential base. It is designed to provide both the know-how and the tools to forge a solid presidency. It will be an intensive, highly focused program, a group of tightly connected topics and experiences. The focus is on the first 500 days, developing and enhancing skills that will carry participants through their presidential career. Topics The Nature of the Presidency Establishing Your Presidency Shaping the Organization/Team Building Board and System Relationships Financial Management Facilities Management The External Side of the Presidency Interpretive Leadership Through ial Communications Managing Your Pace The Personal Side of the Presidency Development/Friend and Fund Raising Relevant, right-timed and rigorous in content. New presidents should not miss the opportunity to participate. Linda L.M. Bennett, University of Southern Indiana All of the Academy faculty members have had direct and highly successful experience in the subjects they teach. Their teaching methods will emphasize discussion and interactive learning, with practical suggestions emerging from case studies and reflections on leadership challenges. Issues of personal and professional balance, authenticity and tying decisions to principles and priorities will serve as underlying themes of the discussion. Eligibility s and chancellors at AASCU member institutions who are serving in this capacity for the first time and who assumed their presidencies within the past two years (i.e., since spring 2009).

3 Participation Commitment The intensive, interactive nature of the Academy makes it essential that participants complete the entire program. Please plan travel to arrive in time for the opening dinner at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 25 and stay until the program ends on Friday evening, July 29, with departure on Saturday, July 30. ial Spouses/Partners The intensive and highly focused nature of the Academy requires that this program be limited to presidents only. It is expected that participants will engage in active discussion with faculty and colleagues during meals and activities as well as in scheduled sessions and in private consultations. No spouse activities are planned during the Academy and spouses are not encouraged to accompany participants to Wisconsin. AASCU recognizes the importance of the presidential team and does include presidential spouses and partners in all sessions at the Annual Meeting and Summer Council. Registration Information The registration fee of $1,900 includes all Academy program costs, materials, and meals during the four and a half day program. (This fee is competitive with the comparable programs that are not designed especially for AASCU presidents and chancellors.) Participants are responsible for paying their own travel and hotel costs. Sorry, we cannot accept telephone or registrations. The topics were perfect and the faculty did an excellent job preparing, presenting and engaging the participants in meaningful dialogue. 5 When calling Grand Geneva, mention that you are with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities to be assured of our group rate of $199 per night, taxes, and a campus fee of $15 per night which covers access to the fitness center, wireless internet, telephone calls, and transportation on the conference center grounds. Reservations should be made before Friday, June 24 to be assured of our group rate. Room reservations after that date will be on a space available basis and may be at a higher rate. Transportation The airports closest to Grand Geneva are Milwaukee s General Mitchell International Airport (MKE) (about an hour away) and Chicago s O Hare Airport (ORD) (about 90 minutes away). Coordinator Patricia P. Cormier Emerita Longwood University, Virginia Cormier served as president of Longwood University from 1996 to She has served as a lead member of the Academy faculty for the past decade and this year is making the transition to the Coordinator role. Faculty Kenneth Dobbins Southeast Missouri State University Dobbins was appointed president of Southeast Missouri State University in 1999, following eight years of service as vice president for finance and administration and later as executive vice president. He also held a variety of financial management positions at Kent State University in Ohio. He joined the Academy faculty in Jolene Koester California State University, Northridge Koester has been president of CSU Northridge since She was previously the provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State University Sacramento. She brings an academic background in communication studies to her Academy faculty role. Les Wong Northern Michigan University Wong has served as president of Northern Michigan University since 2004, having served as academic vice president at Valley City State University in North Dakota and the University of Southern Colorado. This is his first year as a member of the Academy faculty team.

12 Delivering America s Promise AASCU s membership of more than 420 public college and university members are found throughout the United States, including Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
