2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The mission of Memphis Delta Preparatory (MDP) Charter School is to support and grow productive and wellrounded citizens who will succeed in college and beyond. We will work tirelessly to ensure that all of our students are prepared to reach, attend, and graduate from highly selective colleges and universities. A completed course of study at a top-tier college will allow our students to build and support healthy and happy families, empower and improve their Memphis neighborhoods, and enjoy a rich intellectual life. MDP is committed to closing racial and economic achievement gaps in a meaningful way not only as measured through elementary and secondary standardized test scores, but more importantly, through post-secondary degree attainment. Excellent teaching is by far the most significant in-school factor driving student learning. To achieve the results we seek for all of our students, we will have an intensive focus on highly-effective teacher coaching, so that every teacher at MDP is providing a world-class education for our students. Studies have shown that high quality teacher development can quickly change teacher practice and increase effectiveness, for both new and veteran teachers. At MDP, we will hold our students and ourselves to a high standard of performance, effort, and integrity, ensuring that our school community uses the challenges our students and families face to motivate and inspire our work rather than to excuse suboptimal outcomes. We know that when teachers are getting better, at an ever-accelerating rate, our students can consistently achieve at unprecedented levels. Background Memphis Delta Preparatory is a tuition-free, public charter school, opening in Fall 2016 in the South Memphis Community. Initially serving 300 students in grades K-4, Memphis Delta Prep will grow to serve 540 students in grades K-5. School Leader Michael McKenna spent five years as a founding teacher at The Soulsville Charter School and became deeply committed to a community where there is a dire need for more quality academic options. Currently, there are more than 26,000 elementary school-age students living in our South Memphis community. Given that the city-wide college-readiness percentage by ACT scores is between 5% and 11%, there are approximately 23,930 K-8 students in need of higher quality seats in South Memphis. The world Delta in "Memphis Delta Prep" refers to both Memphis historic gateway location and our commitment to changing student and family outcomes by changing our practice as educators. At MDP, we will accelerate student achievement by accelerating teacher growth. Each teacher at MDP will receive approximately thirteen coaching touch points weekly. When teachers are getting better faster, our students can consistently achieve at unprecedented levels. Core Values At Memphis Delta Prep, three core values drive our work with staff, students, and families. Practice: To achieve our mission of sending all of our students on the path to graduation from selective colleges, we must over prepare them academically as compared to their peers around the country. Every individual (teachers, leaders, students) in our school community will engage in deliberate practice to build habits for success. Smile: As we practice our skills to improve both learning and teaching, students and faculty will be smiling and optimistic every single day. The work we are doing is not easy, but we will maintain an unwaveringly positive outlook on the incredible power of education as an agent of change. Grow: By continuously practicing academic and social skills and doing so with positivity, our students will grow at unprecedented rates. We cannot settle for a constant rate of improvement; we need to intentionally accelerate the rate of learning, both for our students and our teachers. Memphis Delta Prep is the proud partner school of The Soulsville Charter School, a South Memphis charter school serving grades Memphis Delta Prep is excited to work with Soulsville to provide a quality K-12 education for South Memphis students. 2

3 Impact In alignment with our mission, the goals of Memphis Delta Prep revolve around ensuring that each of our students is prepared to reach, attend, and ultimately graduate from a top-tier college. Attaining a college degree is associated with a wide variety of positive economic, social, emotional, and physical outcomes; a college degree, and potentially an advanced degree, is becoming increasingly necessary to compete in the global knowledge-based economy; attending and graduating from college dramatically decreases the likelihood of future familial generations experiencing poverty and helps individuals drive positive change in their home communities; and attending a top-tier, selective college dramatically increases the likelihood of graduation, while also enhancing the positive effects of general college completion listed above. At Memphis Delta Prep, our vision is for a generation of young people to return to the most distressed parts of their home city, bringing with them a world-class college education. Each of our students will build and support healthy and happy families, empower and improve their Memphis neighborhoods, and enjoy a rich intellectual life. At Memphis Delta Prep, the rallying cry for our students will be to get Rhodes Ready, a motto which represents the opportunity and choice each of our students will ultimately have when we achieve our goals. Each MDP graduate will have the skills and credentials to attend a highly selective post-secondary institution by the time they finish high school. Memphis Delta Prep s goal is that all students are on-track to be Rhodes Ready in literacy, math, and non-cognitive skills. Excellent teachers supported by the intensive and highly effective teacher coaching model at MDP will ensure that students leave MDP with those habits of mind needed to be on track toward college and career success. Needs 1. Instructional Coaching: Our focus on intensive development by our instructional coaches means that every teacher is improving at an ever-accelerating rate, ultimately leading to faster student growth. The cost of our instructional coaching model is approximately $250,000/year. 2. Student Services: MDP serves every student who wants to attend our school. We recognize that each student has individual needs and are committed to providing the supports to help all students be successful. $10,000 ensures that a student with special needs receives the additional services s/he needs, such as nursing, one-on-one support, or occupational, physical, and speech therapy. 3. Classroom Libraries: "Just right" books are the key to building great readers, so we are always building our classroom libraries. $1,000 can fund a new starter library for one class. 4. Learning Through Play: Because play is crucial for child development, MDP has a dedicated play period using Spielgaben, a German Montessori play curriculum. The cost to implement the Spielgaben curriculum at MDP is $8, Student Computers: MDP uses computers to support individual learning in reading and math, as well as to teach critical computer literacy skills. Student computers, infrastructure, and adaptive learning software cost $50,000. 6 Management Executive Director/CEO Executive Director Michael McKenna Term Start Mar Experience Michael K. McKenna has spent the last ten years working in urban education. He has most recently worked with Jounce Partners, a non-profit organization focused on training urban school leaders to accelerate teacher development. As the first Jounce School Leadership Fellow, Mr. McKenna is being supported and prepared by Jounce and external collaborators to open and run a world class school built around a unique teacher coaching model. In the first year of this Fellowship, Mr. McKenna coached principals, assistant principals, and teachers at twelve urban schools in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., visited and learned from high-performing schools and their leaders across the country, and received hands on training as an instructional leader. Currently Mr. McKenna is focused on opening MDP to create the first school built from the ground up around extremely highfrequency teacher coaching. Prior to his work with Jounce, Mike was with KIPP Philadelphia Charter School as an 8th Grade Math Teacher and then an Assistant Principal. While at KIPP he participated in the nationwide Miles Family Fellowship, a training program to prepare new KIPP school leaders. Before joining KIPP, Mike was the founding 8th grade Math Teacher at the Soulsville Charter School in Memphis, Tennessee. During his six years at Soulsville, he served as a grade level chair, athletic director, math department chair, and, of course, as the director of happiness! Originally from Philadelphia, Mike graduated from Princeton University with a degree in sociology and received his teaching license through the Princeton teacher preparation program. While in Memphis, he received his Masters of Education from Christian Brothers University.
