2 Apprenticeship standard Level 7 Degree Apprenticeship (incorporating levels 4 through 7). Power Engineer. Pathways: 1. Transmission and Distribution 2. Electrical Engineering 3. Mechanical Engineering Outcome Leading to MEng degree supporting Chartered Engineer (CEng) Registration. Academic award The Power Engineering Apprenticeship can be delivered across a number of job roles. However, LSBU will be offering the following degree pathways from September 2017, in three areas: MEng(Hons) Power Engineering (Transmission and Distribution) MEng(Hons) Power Engineering (Electrical Engineering) MEng(Hons) Power Engineering (Mechanical Engineering). Typical duration For the Apprenticeship Standards to be achieved, employers are advised this typically takes 6+ years, which incorporates a 6-year day release integrated Master of Engineering (MEng) Degree. Employers must support the development of occupational and professional competence, and provide opportunity for Apprentices to demonstrate their engineering management and leadership skills in order to develop Chartered Engineer (CEng) competence.

3 Apprenticeship structure / requirements Power Engineers will work in Power Generation, Power Transmission or Power Distribution. The Engineers, using their core and specialist electrical, mechanical or control and instrumentation knowledge and skills, will take responsibility for developing and leading in aspects of innovation, asset management, plant operations and plant maintenance. Power Engineers are highly skilled focusing on some of the most complex and fundamental engineering challenges within the energy sector. Solving problems in new ways, or paradigm shifting innovations that influence the future of the sector and how the underlying markets will operate are second nature. Working with a wide range of people, including industry experts and external bodies to develop and apply new technologies as well as improve safety, reliability and cost effectiveness methods for the sector. Apprentices will complete a Masters level degree that will support the fundamental scientific and mathematical principles that equip them with the understanding required to operate effectively and efficiently at a high level within this sector. This will be supported by vocational training to develop the required competencies specific to particular roles within the chosen sectors. London South Bank University will support employers predominantly through the provision of a 6-year part time MEng (Honours) Power Engineering degree. The university will also support employers where required to develop the on the job/vocational training, or recognise what is in place, in order to meet the requirements for end point assessment, that being preparation

4 for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration through a relevant Professional Engineering Institution. Degree programme description The MEng (Honours) Power Engineering degree programme is based on sound established technical foundations and, for many learners it offers a spread of general topics, which is the best foundation for an ever challenging and changing career in the engineering profession. The part time MEng (Honours) Power Engineering degree programmes follow a 6-year day release (full day and evening) delivery model, with modules constituting either 100 or 80 credits each academic year. Through the Degree Apprenticeship delivery model, we are seeking to work directly with employers to ensure work based projects are embedded into the apprentice s learning whilst ensuring those projects are relevant to the workplace and are of benefit to the business. Degree modules Each MEng Power Engineering pathway breaks down into a set of 11 core modules, which are then supported by pathway specific modules for either transmission and distribution engineering, electrical engineering or mechanical engineering. The core modules are as follows: Level 4 1. Introduction to Electrical and Electronic Engineering 2. Engineering Maths

5 3. Design and Practice 4. Engineering Computing Level 5 5. Electrical Machines and Power Electronics 6. Advanced Mathematics Level 6 7. Innovation and Enterprise 8. Project Level 7 9. Group Project 10. Power Systems Engineering 11. Technical Research and Professional Skills These modules are typically 20 credits, with the exception of the two projects which are 40 credits each. The Transmission and Distribution and Electrical Engineering Pathways have the following specific modules: Level 4: Engineering Principles Principles of Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution

6 Level 5: Principles of Control Circuits, Signals and Systems Team Design Project (Level 5) System Operation and SCADA Level 6: Electrical Energy Convertors and Drives Industry and Environment Industry and Regulations Level 7 Power Generation Components Testing and Maintenance Power Systems Network Architecture The Mechanical Engineering pathway has the following specific modules: Level 4: Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Thermofluids and Dynamics Level 5: Solid mechanics and FEA Thermofluids and sustainable energy Dynamics and Control Engineering Design

7 Level 6 Power Engineering and Environment Dynamics and Systems Modelling Thermofluids and Turbomachinery Level 7 Structures for Power Engineering Rotating machines and Machine Dynamics End point assessment The apprentice will take all the assessments of the embedded degree programme. They will create, maintain and complete an e-portfolio/ logbook and carry out two projects towards the end of the apprenticeship. An independent assessor will take a holistic view of the learner s competencies and judges whether they meet the outcomes of the standard. The End Point Assessment will be carried out by the University, and be based on the e-portfolio/logbook and level 6 and 7 projects, and an interview. Pre-requisites/ Occupational profile In order to apply for entry to this Degree Apprenticeship, apprentices must meet the entry requirements for the MEng (Hons) Power Engineering degree programme for September 2017; These are: A Level AAB or; BTEC National Diploma DDD or;

8 Access to HE qualifications with 24 Distinctions and 21 Merits or; Equivalent level 3 qualifications worth 128 UCAS points Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A-C including Maths and English or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above). We welcome qualifications from around the world. English language qualifications for international students: IELTS score of 6.0 or Cambridge Proficiency or Advanced Grade C. Enrolment date September 2017 Cost Employers must commit to employing apprentices for the entirety of the Degree Apprenticeship and comply with the minimum wage requirements published. This is a significant cost and comes before any training funds or levy can be released from the ESFA. The overall cost of the degree apprenticeship degree programme and endpoint assessment is 36,000. The funding cap for this standard is 6 which is 27,000 for this programme from May Employers are advised that the difference is paid to LSBU directly, alongside any additional training that is required by the employer.
