5 Executive summary St. Thomas College, Ranny is a first grade college located in Ranny, a place rightly described as foothold of Sabarimala, the abode of the Holy Sree Ayyappa, which is a famous pilgrim centre. The college was accredited in 2007 at the B+ level with 761 score and is celebrating the Golden Jubilee this year. We are now volunteering for the second cycle reaccreditation submitting its SSR 2014, testament of beliefs and pursuits of excellence during the last five years. St. Thomas college, Ranny, affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, was established in 1964 by St. Thomas Valiyapally, Ranny, a premier parish of the Syrian Knanaya Arch Diocese of Malankara with the whole hearted support of the then Bishop Late Lamented H.G. Abraham Mor Clemis for meeting the educational needs of the youth of the local community. The college has been striving hard to fulfill its motto Knowledge is Power and for achieving the vision and mission through value based holistic and quality education in creating spiritually inspired, morally upright, intellectually enlightened and socially committed young men and women who love God and their country. Upholding the noble traditions laid down by the founders, the institution surges ahead towards excellence. The college fosters uninterrupted pursuit of knowledge by young scholars who equip themselves with competency to meet the challenges of the modern society. Imparting functionally useful, socially relevant and morally uplifting education has always be the objective of this institution. The curricular, co-curricular and extra curricular activities of the college hinge around the broad vision of molding responsible citizens of the world. Ecofriendly campus and the lush green premises render a very congenial atmosphere for the students who pursuit their passion for learning. A politics free campus is yet another hallmark of this institution. The concerted effort of the management and the staff in banning student s politics in the college is highly laudable. The two year value education programme based on a region specific specialized curriculum is a unique entity of the college. Highly proficient and dedicated faculty is an asset to this institution. Every occasion of festivity and celebration proclaim the secularist and democratic ideals the college stands for. The performance appraisal of this institution is summarized below. 1. Curricular Aspects Curriculum planning and execution of the college revolve around the vision and mission of the college. Effective implementation of the curriculum is managed through discipline based learning; value based learning and inter-disciplinary learning. Support from the university includes, Orientation and refresher courses for teachers, guidance in the use of new educational technology, FDP, national / international seminars, workshops etc :- Infrastructure, well equipped laboratories, fully automated office, library, inflibnet faculty, NAAC-SSR- St. Thomas College, Ranni, Jan Page 5
6 smart classroom, external professor expertise, ICT, eco friendly campus etc are provided by the management. The IQAC monitors all the developmental activities of the college, including scope improvements, feedback and outcome. Institutional contribution for curriculum implementation include convenient class timings, class divisions, provision for voicing complaints and grievances, multi gymnasium, toilet facilities for both boys and girls separately, fully furnished departmental rooms, tiled flooring, attached toilets, rainwater harvesting facilities, uninterrupted power supply etc. Objectives of the curriculum are also achieved through interacting with stakeholders, global level experts, and various modes of assessments, co-curricular and extracurricular activities, various club activities and department associations. Certificate/diploma/skill development courses like PGDCA, DCA, ACCA, ICWA, practical Accounting, computer hardware and electronics, tailoring, Vermi-compost preparation, training on mushroom cultivation, apiculture, NET/JRF/bank test coaching classes are conducted in college. Nine under graduate programmes (choice based credit and semester system- CBCSS) and four post graduate programmes (credit and semester system- CSS) with a wide range of subject options in the core, complementary, common, open, and elective courses are offered by the college. Apart from this, special sessions by experts are arranged to enhance multifarious skills of the students. In order to ensure that academic programmes and institutional goals are integrated, the college undertakes to conduct value education, tutorial classes and climate change and environmental education, activities of various department associations, service units like NSS, NCC, KSA, ICPF, SCM, & EU etc:- art and craft classes, two wheeler/four wheeler driving classes, beautification course, tailoring and cooking classes under auspices of Women s cell, visit to old age homes,orphanages, food supply in government hospitals, Onam /Christmas celebrations and so on. The activities of various clubs like ED club, Forestry club, Nature club, Film club, Gymnasium club, career guidance cell, and ASAP also contribute to the enrichment of the curriculum. Bridging courses and remedial coaching are conducted for week students. Alumni and Parent Teacher Association are also actively taking part in the smooth function of the college. The institution has had an elaborate system of obtaining feedback from all kinds of stake holders on all parameters for two decades. Teaching, Learning and Evaluation St Thomas College Ranny with an objective of empowering students through higher education places emphasis on facilitating creation of learner-centric environment conducive for quality education. The institution ensures wide publicity to the admission process through the prospectus and institutional website. The admission details are also put up on the college display board. The University publishes details of admission schedule in its website and in all leading news papers of the State. Students are selected for admission purely on the basis of merit in the qualifying examination. The college strictly follows the admission rules prescribed by the University and State Government. Majority of the students are from rural areas belonging to economically and educationally backward sections. SC/ST/OEC and economically backward students are exempted from paying all types of fees by the Government. Our attempt is to infuse more of diversity into the admission process without compromising our quest for excellence. SC/ST/OBC candidates are given 20% seat reservation and due relaxations in the minimum percentage of eligibility marks as the government dictates. Economically- weaker sections are helped in all ways possible by the college as well as by the departments. They are also helped to procure stipends and scholarships of various kinds as per Central and State Government rules. Poor Students Aid Fund of the College is a great blessing for them. The institution is fully adhering to governmental policies regarding the needs of differently-abled students. Seats are reserved at the time of admission in various programmes, we admit students of all calibers in line with our objective EDUCATION FOR ALL. Special sessions are organized to bridge the knowledge gap of the incoming students from different backgrounds. Teachers give extra time to the students to help them cope with the programmes to which they are enrolled. The college plans and organizes the teaching, learning and evaluation schedules in the following manner. The academic calendar of Mahatma Gandhi University (June- March) is strictly followed in the college. 8 academic year. It provides plan for the academic year to students, teachers and parents. Each department functions according to the teaching plan prepared at the department level,in tune with goals and objectives of the college. The IQAC plays a vital role in the quality enhancement and sustenance of the teaching-learning process by giving timely directions and encouragement to the faculty, staff and students. Academic environment of this institution is in a transition stage from teachers centric to student-centric. The various Interactive techniques practiced are: (1) Think/Pair/Share (2) Case Study (3) Incident process (4) Question-Answer Session (5) Demonstration (6) Group Discussion (7) Poster and College making (8) Role play. To sensitize women about their status, identity and role, the college has established Women Empowerment Cell. Every attempt is made by the faculty to develop in the students, irrespective of the discipline they represent values characterized by objectivity, open-mindedness, disinterestedness, curiosity, suspended judgment, critical mindedness and rationality. Our teachers make use of a variety of technological teaching aids that enhance student learning with both online resources and non-digital technologies. Online resources, e-readers, websites and online software, interactive whiteboards, LCD Projectors, digital camera, digital microscope, Smart Boards, Web cams and Educational CDs are some of them. The numerous ways in which students and faculty are acquainted with the advanced knowledge and skills in their respective disciplines are Workshops, Seminars, Expert lectures and Subscriptions to research journals, print as well as digital and web. A few departments bring out their own research publications which provide the faculty and students exposure to new knowledge. The Vision of the library is to access support to ever widening intellectual enquiry exceeding expectation. To fulfill this mission, the Library has committed itself to understand the academic needs of its users, to collect, create and preserve resources to support these endeavors, to ensure preservation of the collections and resources, create hospitable physical and virtual environments with the aid of state of the art tools and technologies. Management of the institution is aware of the need of training for faculty and is co-operative in sending the faculty to various programmes for faculty development like orientation and refresher courses. All faculty members have participated in a good number of external Workshops/Seminars/Conferences supported by national/international professional bodies and there have been a great number of NAAC-SSR- St. Thomas College, Ranni, Jan Page 8
9 paper presentations in Workshops/Seminars/Conferences conducted or supported by professional agencies. The system of student evaluation of teachers has been in practice in this college for a few decades. External Peer Evaluation of the teachers is done by the University as an essential screening for promotion. Formative Evaluation approach is adopted for internal assessment and Summative Evaluation Approach is adopted for External evaluation. The Academic Excellence Committee of the college functions as the Learning Outcome Assessment Committee entrusted with the responsibility to monitor the institutional learning outcome and achievement by periodic and systematic review of the outcome of all programmes. Future plans include PG Programmes in Botany and Zoology, Research centers in the department of Physics and Chemistry, One International Seminar each by all PG departments in alternate years, National Seminars by all departments on a yearly basis, more paper presentations by faculty in Foreign Countries etc. 3. Research, consultancy and extension St. Thomas college Ranny is in the path of acquiring highest level of education through research oriented teaching and learning. The college has constituted a research committee comprising Principal as convener, Vice principal as joint convener and executive members nominated by the convener from all departments. Institution always promote faculty enrichment. A total of 8 faculty undertook Ph. D. studies during the post accreditation period. Out of them 4 are already awarded Ph.D. There was commendable increase in the number of faculty undertaking minor projects, workshops/seminars organized by various departments. At present the institution can claim a total of 6 funded minor projects. Guiding students research projects is a part of teaching in this institution. During the last five years the departments organized three national level seminars. Faculty have published 11 papers in national/international journals. They have presented research papers in various national seminars in their individual capacity and in collaboration with other institutes-leading to a presentation of 8 papers and 10 books. Our faculty take interest in bringing outstanding researchers from various research institutes.various departments of this institution engage in yearlong academic activities in collaboration with reputed agencies. Students of this college are getting internship/on the job training in various companies/institutions. 10 rooms, physical infrastructure etc. Library facility include e-journals and e-books offered by INFLIBNET Science departments provide consultancy services like Mushroom cultivation, horticulture promotion, DRC estimation of latex, nanotechnology and vermi-compost preparation. Commerce department provide training on entrepreneurship. English department provide assistance in improving writing skills. Arts departments provide archaeology and socio economic analysis. Tourism department offers Tourist destination development programme. Physical education department provide awareness on health and physical fitness. This institution believes that it has to fulfill a lot of social responsibilities to enrich the community in which it exists. Our NSS unit arrange free medical check up to public, awareness programmes on lifestyle diseases, conduct socio economic surveys. A blood donation forum is functioning in the college. As the programme house to homeless NSS providing house to the poor and homeless student in the college every year. Women cell providing training classes on tailoring,driving,fabric painting etc to students and public. NCC unit of the college visit old age home near Puthamon once in every month. Extension and outreach activities are organized at the college and department levels. Educational extension programmes like certificate courses, exhibitions and intercollegiate quiz competitions, elocutions, interactions with academic/industrial experts visits to rural and tribal areas were done. The exposure they get from the extension activities and involvement in the life situation of the underprivileged in the society complement the academic learning experience of the students. 4. Infrastructure & Learning Resources The institution policy of creation and enhancement of infrastructure brought effective teaching and learning. And for this the first step took from a semi permanent building since its inception in 1964, the college has given top priority for the improvement of its infrastructure facilities on par with other standard higher education facilities. At present the college has four blocks including the newly built Vayala Idikula Block and the ancient building of 1964 which still cherish the old memories. A good ambience is highly essential to create learning atmosphere. Therefore attention is paid to design concrete plans to develop cost effective and sustainable infrastructure. Spacious and well ventilated class room with 100% wooden furniture, sprawling verandas, smart seminar halls with facility for ICT learning, sufficient play grounds, one lady s hostel with a capacity of 100 inmates constructed with the aid of UGC, mess and canteen, auditorium with 1200 seating capacity, high-tension electricity connection with our own transformer for voltage stability, a multi gymnasium and computer labs. 11 If grant is available under any scheme, top priority will be given to enhance infrastructure for the coming academic years. It includes extension of library especially a separate reference section, improvement of common facilities, an indoor sports training facilities (30 m X 18m X 12.5m) and a synthetic basketball court. The institution has the following facilities for curricular, extracurricular and cocurricular activities. They are well equipped labs in various disciplines, computers with wi-fi internet facilities, central library with reference books, national and international journals, periodicals and educational CDs. ICT enabled seminar halls, Botanical garden, Medicinal garden, Apiculture, mushroom cultivation, vermi- compost, sports complex which include 200 m track, football ground, hand ball court, volleyball court, badminton indoor court, well equipped English language lab etc. 5. Student Support and Progression The college was established in a rural area and it caters to the need of the students coming from the interior regions in and around Ranny. The institution stands for imparting education that is functionally useful, socially relevant and morally uplifting to meet the challenging demands of the society. It aims at providing opportunities and facilities to the local people who are economically, socially and educationally backward to make a steady income and become self reliant. The college is owned and managed by the St Thomas Valiapally, Ranny a parish church of the Syrian Knanaya Arch Diocese to meet the cultural and educational needs of the society. The college aims at creating cultured and educated citizens who love God and the country, for that purpose arts and sports, value education, computer education course, job training courses, soft skill development programmes were promoted at the initiative of the management. The management gives enlightened leadership to the principal who in turn leads the college for the fulfillment of the mission. The college has a administrative team comprising of principal, vice principal, head of the department, college staff council, and the officers of the college to offer collective leadership to the college. Hence the administration is decentralized to a great extent. The institution has well defined grievances redressal mechanism to address and redress the grievances of all the members and it was done by Grievances Redressal Committee constituted for overall well being of staff and students. There is a well defined mechanism for analysing student feedback. The institution has taken various efforts to enhance the professional development of teaching and non teaching staff, for that various training, retraining and motivational sessions is arranged. The college maintains a self appraisal system giving weightage to multiple activities performed by faculties inside and outside the campus in various fields. 12 IQAC has established in the college for the continuous evaluation and to maintain consistency in the enhancement and achievement of academic excellence. It ensures continuous improvement in the entire improvement of the institution. It scrutinizes all the developmental activities including teaching and learning, triggering of new courses, seminars and research and development programmes and receive regular feedback. IQAC Collects inferences from the learners and various committees through participatory interaction based on which it proposes comprehensive proposal plan to the governing body for the approval and implementation. 6. Student Support and Progression The modern world is facing lot of challenges, St Thomas College Ranny helps the students to have capable personalities to face that fast and competitive world, for that purpose academic excellence cell, student support cell and student progression cell has been functioning in the college. For academic excellence, scholarship amount of Rs provided to the bright and poor students, concession of Rs granted to OBC,OEC,SC/ST students, Rs has been given for various endowment awards, Rs granted by alumni association functioning in various countries. As a support service, various certificate courses, remedial coaching, orientation programmes, admission reservation, seat reservation for disabled students, SC/ST, OBC students, free career and progression coaching, training programmes for developing entrepreneurship skills are arranged for the students. A lot of co-curricular and extracurricular activities have been undertaken for all round development of students. Many students have bagged various awards in different events in Arts festivals and sports and games competitions conducted in university level and in national level. College conducted intramural and extramural competitions in many games. Various seminars, workshops are arranged to promote the interest of students in arts and literature.ncc and NSS units are very active in the organisation. Counselling services like personal and psycho social counselling is arranged to students to cope with various problems in their life and career counselling are arranged to help students to choose best career. A career guidance and placement cell has been functioning in the college to assist campus placement of the students. To redress the grievances of the students, a strong grievances and redressal cell is working in the college and a complaint box has been set up in the college to collect complaints. The college has well stocked library with about books and various national and international journals, periodicals and so on. Full fledged hostel facility is arranged for girls students to pursue their studies from distant places. Innovations and Best Practices The institution has always been eco-friendly in its practices and during the last five years, the campus has been given much more importance towards the issues like climatic conditions and environmental degeneration. St. Thomas College is situated in Ranni, away from the din and bustle of the town. Our campus stands unique with its lush green, peaceful, calm and beautiful atmosphere. Every year the institution conducts a green audit, for this it maintains a collection service record for waste materials, consumption of electricity and solar energy in the campus, usage of rain water harvesting system, eco-friendly practices and awareness programmes. The various initiative programmes taken by the college to make the campus eco-friendly are energy conservation, water harvesting efforts for carbon neutrality, hazardous waste management etc. During the last four years a spectrum of transformative, innovative options were introduced by this college. That were curriculum designing, learner centered teaching, using innovative instructional methods, various outreach programmes, innovative techniques in assessment, talent seeking programmes and much more. Taking up the vision of Existence is co-existence with nature, the college endorses a programme CLEAN CAMPUS GREEN CAMPUS. The main goals of the practice are to promote awareness on environmental issues and to propagate the awareness and message of protecting the environment as the need of the hour. This institution is renowned for being plastic free and thereby environment friendly. Students are encouraged to keep their classrooms and common places clean. Various programmes were conducted by the college and its departments for conveying the message as this is a healthy practice that all institutions can emulate. The institution has ventured another programme, VALUE BASED EDUCATION. Its unique feature is that the college has formulated its own syllabus under the astute supervision of the principal, Dr. Abraham V. Kuriakose. An active team comprising eminent teachers worked to materialize this difficult task of bringing out a text book, TUNING LIFE IN THE FULLNESS OF ITS BEAUTY. An hour in every week is devoted to value education in UG classes. Each teacher is entrusted as the mentor of a class with whom students can consult even their personal problems to resolve them. Imbibing the essence of the adage Actions speak louder than words students of this college initiated to help financially poor students through SAHAPADIKKORU VEEDU, a charitable act of constructing a house for three students, distributing lunch to poor patients in the Government hospital, Ranni. Special emphasis on value education as a compulsory major component of the degree programme with prescribed text book, syllabus, regular classes and examinations offering certificate on successful completion. Various Associations of teacher and Adequate representatives of the college and its faculty in academic bodies, enabling to voice suggestions for addition and modification and enrichment of course content & evaluation systems. ICT enabled interactive and student centered curriculum delivery practices to suit the personal and professional needs of the heterogeneous groups of students is an automated campus environment with an impressive range of learning resources ranging from the well-stocked library to virtual library with special focus on inter-disciplinary student projects applicable to society. 28 Criterion I Curricular Aspects St. Thomas College, Ranny, a reputed institution of Higher Education in Kerala, established in 1964, is owned and run by St. Thomas Valiyapally, Ranny, a pioneer parish of the Syrian Knanaya Arch Diocese of Malankara. The college, is the graceful fulfillment of the long cherished dream of our Founder Late Lamented His Grace Mor Clemis Abraham Metropolitan, a great visionary and exponent of education. As envisioned by our Founder to ward off the darkness of ignorance and spread the light of knowledge, the college has rightly served the purpose of meeting the educational needs of the young scholars of the local community and from distant places as well.
