1 Student Work Experience at Science World at TELUS World of Science 2013 / 2014 Once again this year, we are offering all Lower Mainland secondary students in grades 11 and 12 the opportunity to gain valuable volunteer work experience at Science World. Attached is a copy of the job description. Here are the available placement periods for the 2013 / 2014 school year: September 2 September 15 (<80 hours considered) February 3 February 16 September 16 September 29 February 17 March 2 September 30 October 13 March 3 March 16 October 12 October 27 * March 31 April 13 October 28 November 10 April 14 April 27 November 9 November 24 * April 28 May 11 November 25 December 8 May 12 May 25 December 9 December 22 May 26 June 8 January 6 January 19 June 9 June 22 January 20 February 2 June 23 July 6 Each placement period will last two weeks, for a total of 80 hours. All placements begin on the Monday and continue until the Sunday as indicated above. We can accommodate a maximum of twelve students during each placement period. Days off will be staggered so that there are 6 to 8 students here on any given day, including weekends and holidays. Hours are 9:00 am - 5:15 pm Monday to Friday and 9:15 am - 5:15 pm weekends and holidays. If you are unable to volunteer during the regular school year, there are additional placements available during the Winter, Spring and Summer breaks. The available placement dates are: Winter break December 21 January 5 * Spring break March 15 March 30 * Summer sessions July 7 July 20 July 21 August 3 August 4 August 17 August 18 August 31 Please note the following: * indicates a Saturday training session (due to holiday / extended break periods)

2 Registration: The registration process is on a first-come, first-served basis. You are advised to register your students as soon as possible, as placements do fill up quickly. 1. Contact us in writing via at and let us know how many places you would like to reserve, for any of the work terms listed. Each student you wish to place requires one spot. In the past, we have found it best to have no more than two students from the same school together on the same placement. If the desired term is full, then you ll be placed on the waiting list. We will reply to your request, in writing, regarding your status. Please, no telephone reservations. It is not necessary to submit any specific names at this stage (unless you have already determined who you would like to place.) Please note that Science World does not accept students who have done the placement previously. 2. No later than three (3) weeks prior to the start of the work term, contact us and confirm your reserved placements by submitting the students names and phone numbers. Confirmation can also be made further in advance once you have selected students please let us know who they will be. If you fail to confirm your placements by 3 weeks prior to the term or if you do not have any specific names, you will automatically lose them to other students on the waiting list. 3. Following confirmation, we will contact students to arrange an interview, or students may contact us to arrange for an interview. All students must be interviewed for suitability prior to their placement. If any of your students are found to be not suitable, we will contact you directly for a replacement. 4. If your students are on the waiting list, we will call you prior to the placement term to inform you of any possible openings. We look forward to working with you and your students this year!

3 WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITY Position: Reports to: Science Facilitator Assistant Managers, Customer Services Science World British Columbia, a self-supporting non-profit organization, stimulates positive attitudes towards science and technology in a fun interactive environment, promoting the development of a knowledge-based society in British Columbia. POSITION DESCRIPTION Under the direction of the Managers, Customer Services, and working alongside the Customer Service Staff Members, you will provide a range of services intended to enhance the customer's experience. RESPONSIBILITIES Provide our customers with a fun, awesome, wow, memorable, out of home experience and friendly, responsive service. Positively influence attitudes towards science, technology, and creative thinking by performing gallery demonstrations, and explaining exhibits. Assist with school group entry and direction. Ensure a safe, clean, secure environment for our customers. Facilitate customer entry to the OMNIMAX Theatre. Assist in the smooth operation of all ancillary services. QUALIFICATIONS Individuals must possess a keen interest in and a good understanding of the sciences. They must be responsible, self-motivated individuals and feel comfortable talking with members of the general public, of varying ages. Candidates should work well in a team environment and should be reliable. Applicants must be available for 10 days (80 hours) over two consecutive weeks, during the day, including weekends and holidays. Submit resumes to:

4 Winter Break Thank you for your interest in sending students to participate in the Student Work Experience Program over Winter Break. We are pleased to offer your students the opportunity to gain valuable volunteer work experience with us. Students participating in a structured volunteer job placement at Science World will benefit from exposure to the organizational structure and daily functions of a successful tourism/service industry facility. Please refer to the job description for additional information. 6 Summer Break Science World British Columbia is a non-profit organization which engages British Columbians in science and inspires future science and technology leadership throughout our province. Due to overwhelming demand, we extend our work experience placements throughout the summer. This will allow your grade 11 or 12 students the opportunity to gain valuable volunteer work experience at our science centre. Each placement period will last two weeks for a total of 80 hours and will accommodate 14 students. Training takes place on the first day of the placement. Please note: students must be available to complete the full 80 hours (10 days) over the two-week period as there are no opportunities to make up lost time. Here are the available placement periods for summer 2014: July 7 July 20, 2014 July 21 August 3, 2014 August 4 August 17, 2014 August 18 August 31, 2014 As the registration process is on a first-come, first-served basis, all schools are advised to register their students (for any of the periods above) as soon as possible.
