Statements Mission To promote a high standard of dance and movement through the education of children and the public. Background Since 2003, PDT has been serving OKC public school children as an arts in education organization through our in-school programming Smart Moves. Smart Moves is a comprehensive dance class offered alongside core curriculum classes to entire grade levels, at no cost to the schools or students participating. This programming, modeled after the programs of the National Dance Institute, allows PDT to serve the largest amount of students with our resources. In 2006, the PDT Youth Company was formed allowing motivated Smart Moves students to further their dance training. PDT Youth Company is offered as an after-school program. PDT is an Allied Arts member agency that is fully funded by grants and community donations, and its operations are run by the Artistic Director and a working, volunteer Board of Trustees. Prairie Dance Theatre was founded in 1978 by Beth Shumway and was Oklahoma's first professional Modern Dance Company. Impact FY16 Accomplishments: Strengthening and developing a new board after term-limit turnover of previous board. 7 new board members were added. Solidifying our Spring fundraiser. Increasing our individual contributors FY17 Goals: Continue to grow our board Add Community Sponsors Continue to increase individual contributors Focus on board development and training Implement a better tool for financial projection Needs Prairie Dance Theater needs more board members, qualified dance teachers, and more opportunities to generate income (specifically in the Spring). CEO/Executive Director Statement Prairie Dance Theatre believes that the dance instruction provided gives our students the gifts of selfconfidence and community that all children deserve. We are dedicated to engaging children in the arts and inspiring them toward excellence through our dance programs, offered free of charge. It is our desire to fill each classroom with dance professionals and live musicians to inspire the students of Oklahoma City. We believe this incredible opportunity should be assessable to all students. It is our hope that you ll join us in our efforts to spread the gift of dance to as many students as we can! 3 Our focus is currently within the OKCPS district due to the high number of students underserved in the arts, in general. We also direct our programming to those schools with the highest poverty levels by identifying schools with % Free/Reduced Lunch. This program is currently offered to entire grade levels in the Oklahoma City area, free of charge to the participating schools and students. There are three options to this program: Full-Year Program - 30 weeks in length (spanning an entire school year), classes meet one day per week and integrate core curriculum classes with the art of dance. In-school performances are held mid-year and end of the year. Half-Year Program - 15 weeks in length (spanning an entire school semester), classes meet one day per week and integrate core curriculum classes with the art of dance. An in-school performance is held at the end of the program. Two-Week Program - Classes meet every day for the two-week period and integrate core curriculum classes with the art of dance.an in-school performance is held at the end of the program. 4 Youth Company Description Category Developed in 2006, this dance troupe was created to further foster the talents and desires of a highly motivated group of alumni from our inschool and after school programs. Those participants in our other programs who show an increased interest and ability will be invited to join the Youth Company. All dancers who participate in this advanced training do so at no cost. The Youth Company represents PDT throughout the community in various capacities such as performing at the Festival of the Arts and two annual performances open to the public. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma. Tonya performed professionally with Oklahoma's first modern dance company, Prairie Dance Theatre for numerous seasons. As Artistic Director, Tonya is able to fulfill her strong conviction that dance is more than a performance art; it is a life-long vehicle for giving back to the community and touching lives that might not otherwise be touched. Since implementing the after-school program, The Prairie Dance Experience, in 2003, hundreds of children have received free dance experiences and have been inspired toward excellence through the programs of Prairie Dance Theatre. Tonya has served as a Roster Artist for the Oklahoma State Arts Council since She has resided as a dance specialist with the DANCEwise Project in Putnam City School District since 2006 and has been on staff with Artworks Summer Camp since She serves on OSAI Dance Advisory board, UCO Dance Education Advisory Board, OAHPERD board and various arts in education task forces and groups.
