1 Medical Laboratory Technician Program Curriculum Guide Updated: 1/2/18 The information contained within this curriculum guide is the official Medical Laboratory Technician Program Policies and Procedures effective for the academic year It is the student s responsibility to keep updated on any program changes. I. General Overview: The Medical Laboratory Technician Program is offered at the Downtown Campus of the college, located near the heart of the Louisville Medical Center Campus. It is a 68 credit hour, collegiate program leading to an Associate in Applied Science Degree and prepares the student to assume the responsibilities of a clinical laboratory technician within health care facilities and elsewhere. These duties and responsibilities include performing laboratory tests in all areas of the clinical laboratory. The curriculum may include course work in the supporting sciences, general education areas and the core program requirements. Interested students should contact the Medical Laboratory Technician faculty for additional information. II. Broadway Louisville, KY III. Admission Policies and Procedures: A. College Admission The student must first apply to the college. This can be done on-line or in-person on the first floor of the Jefferson Educational Center at the corner of 2 nd St. and Broadway across from McDonalds. An Admissions Application may be found on the college website. Admission to the College does not imply admission to the Medical Laboratory Technician Program. B. Program Admission The Medical Laboratory Technician Program is a Selective Admissions Program which means not every student in the applicant pool may be accepted. Admission to the Medical Laboratory Technician program is competitive and enrollment in the program is limited because of available faculty, financial, and/or clinical resources at the college or health care facilities. Student selection is made by the 1
2 President of the College or the President s designee after considering the recommendations of the Selective Admissions Committee. Students are selected each Spring semester of the academic year for admission into the program starting in the Fall semester of the same year. The Medical Laboratory Technician Program admits twenty (20) students each Fall semester. Those students accepted into the program will be notified via US Mail and/or via their JCTC address by June 1 st of the application year. IV. Pre-requisite courses You must complete the following courses with a grade of C or better to be considered for admission to the MLT program: a. MAT 110 Applied Mathematics or higher b. BIO 135 or BIO 137 (Anatomy and Physiology) V. Technical Standards: Adequate visual acuity Sufficient strength, gross motor, and fine motor coordination Sufficient verbal and written communication skills Sufficient intellectual, emotional, and physical functions to plan and implement laboratory duties responsibly VI. Minimum Requirements Established by the Senate Rules for admission into the Applicant Pool: The following materials must be on file in the Program Coordinator s office by May 1st: Application for admission to JCTC Official high school transcript or a passing GED official score report Official transcripts of all post-secondary education or training ACT examination results Letter written to the MLT Program Coordinator stating intent to be admitted to the program Must attend a pre-admission conference COMPASS testing if required VII. Application Process and Deadlines: Step 1: Submit an application to Jefferson Community & Technical College Step 2: Submit a separate MLT Program Application to the Academic Program Coordinator. Program applications will be made available during MLT Program Preadmission Conferences held on various dates/times/locations announced in the on-line Student Bulletin. Conferences are held periodically throughout the academic year and a schedule of this year s conferences are included in this Guide. The application process and procedures are reviewed during the Preadmission Conferences. Therefore, all students interested in applying to the MLT Program must attend a Preadmission Conference. VIII. Selection Process and Deadlines: May 1 st Deadline to submit application and accompanying information Preference may be given to: applicants with an ACT composite score of 19 or higher applicants who rank in the upper half of their graduating class or have an average score of 50 or above on the GED 2
3 applicants who submit evidence of successful completion of developmental course work or those who have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better taking 12 or more credit hours of college work, including at least one science course Kentucky residents applicants with a background in math, chemistry or biology Certificates obtained in Phlebotomy or Physician Office Lab applicants who are veterans, active duty personnel, their spouses and also displaced workers who qualify under the Trade Adjustment Act students with the highest scores will be selected for an interview The number of points awarded and the interview scores will determine the most eligible applicants. The final selection of class is at the discretion of the selection committee. B = 9 pts. Math C = 6 pts. (Algebra or higher) Chemistry/ Physics Biology HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: Graduated in upper half of graduating class 10 points OR STUDENTS WITH A GED: 50 or > 10 points IX. Post Admission Requirements and Deadlines: Upon admittance the student must submit the following materials prior to beginning clinical experiences. Evidence of receiving the Hepatitis B vaccine series or a vaccine declination form TB skin test or chest X-Ray annually Immunization records - MMR, Hep B, Varicella (Chickenpox) Results of Color Blindness test 4
5 X. Criminal Background Checks and Drug Testing: All Allied Health majors with a clinical component within their major must submit to a criminal background check and drug screening. This is to ensure a safe clinical environment for both students and the public and to meet the contractual requirements of area healthcare facilities. Situations in which a student does not have a satisfactory background check or drug test, will be reviewed by the Dean of Allied Health on a caseby-case basis. Convictions involving the following crimes may serve to disqualify a person from participating in required clinical learning experiences: 1. any felony, whether listed below or not 2. crimes involving drugs, including but not limited to unlawful possession or distribution 3. crimes of physical violence to include any type of abuse (child, spousal, or of the elderly), abduction such as kidnapping, manslaughter, murder, robbery, sexual crimes, possession of a restricted fire arm or any related weapons offenses, assault and battery or 4. conviction of a misdemeanor related to abuse, neglect or exploitation. Drug screening may be required of a student at any time throughout the course of study if there is reasonable suspicion on the part of the program faculty that the student may be using a controlled substance not prescribed by a health care provider. Positive findings on a drug screen or refusal to submit to a requested drug screen will result in immediate administrative withdrawal of the student from the program. Each student will be given the designated facility and time once they are accepted into the program. The cost of background checks and drug testing is the responsibility of each student. X. Accreditation: Jefferson Community and Technical College is a public, comprehensive, postsecondary institution accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate degree. The Medical Laboratory Technician Program is accredited through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Credentialing Exam(s)/Licensure: Upon successful completion of this program, the graduate is eligible to sit for the national certification examination (ASCP Board of Registry Exam) as a medical laboratory technician. XII. Financial Information/Expenses : Specific questions concerning financial assistance should be directed to the Downtown Campus Financial Aid Office located on the 4 th floor of the Jefferson Education Center or by calling (502) Tuition This information may be found in the college catalog or on-line at the college s website. 2. Incoming Freshmen - Students must take one of the following college introduction courses FYE 105 or AHS 105 within the first two (2) semesters of college. Students transferring college course work into Jefferson Community and Technical College are exempt from this requirement. B. Developmental Course Work Students needing developmental math courses cannot take collegiate math and/or science courses until they successfully complete their developmental courses. Students needing developmental English or Reading can only take a computer class until they successfully complete their developmental courses. C. Placement/Assessment Testing The ACT and Compass math scores are only good for two (2) years and the English scores are only good for five (5) years. If they are older, you must be Compass tested again for that section. D. Course Time Limitations - Math requirement over 10 years old must be repeated. Anatomy and Physiology requirement over 10 years old must be repeated. Chemistry requirement over 10 years old must be repeated. Microbiology course, BIO 225 or equivalent over 5 years old must be repeated. 6
