This handbook also serves as an aid to parents or guardians who support MCST Cosmetology students. This guide contains information such as the attendance policy and theory requirements that are vital to each student s success. It is the obligation of students and parents/guardians to become familiar with all of the information in the Student Handbook. The rules and regulations help make Morris County School of Technology an outstanding place for Cosmetology students. Students significantly contribute to making the program successful by following the rules and showing respect for fellow students and staff members. Meet the hour requirements of Cosmetology I (500 hours); b. Successfully complete Cosmetology I with a 75 average or better; c. successfully meet the Cosmetology Attendance Requirements Eligibility to sit for the Licensing Exam Students enrolled in Cosmetology II may participate in the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology Licensure Examination if they: a. Successfully complete Cosmetology I and II with a 75 average or better; b. Successfully meet the Cosmetology Attendance Requirements 918 hours documented by Theory Written Exam (approx. 1st week of May) c. Satisfactorily complete laboratory requirements. Students not eligible to participate in the State Board Exam will be required to take a written final exam. Students may appeal any advancement decisions to the Program Supervisor, Rori Benson Academic Probation Notice will be sent home and a meeting will be held with any student and parent/guardian if the student does not maintain a 75% average by the end of the first marking period. During the meeting, an academic improvement contract will be created and signed. Failure to meet the requirements within that contract may lead to a forfeiture of the student s right to return to the program the following year or complete the State Board Exam.

3 Cosmetology Attendance Requirements The New Jersey Board of Cosmetology requires strict adherence to the mandated 1000 hour requirement of instruction in cosmetology and hairstyling at an approved school in New Jersey to be eligible to sit for the state licensing exam. In order to meet the mandated hour requirement students must adhere to our Cosmetology program attendance policy. The attendance requirements for the Cosmetology program reflect the NJ State Licensure Exam mandates. Students are expected to be in attendance, on time and prepared for class each day school is in session. Absences diminish a student s ability to succeed and may result in poor grades, loss of credit, and failure to be eligible to take the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology licensing exam. Each day a student is not present counts as hours missed. Students will be permitted to make up a limited number of hours as follows; Students will be permitted to utilize Delmar Learning Software (Cengage) to make up to 14 hours of missed class time per year (5 days). Students will be permitted to make up additional days of absence by attending designated after school hours provided by the cosmetology instructors during the school year. When a student is absent three days, a letter will be sent home reminding the student and parent/guardian of the mandated hour requirement. This letter will serve as a warning for the student that failure to meet the 1000 hour requirement may exclude the student from the opportunity to sit for the licensing exam. After the student is absent five days, the student and a parent/guardian will be required to participate in an attendance conference. During the conference, an attendance contract outlining the parameters for student attendance will be created. Non compliance to the student attendance contract will result in failure to be eligible to take the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology licensing exam. It is the responsibility of the student to make up any missed assignments and hours. Students will complete all make up work and hours before the end of the marking period. If make up work is not completed it will result in a zero ( 0 ) grade. Students are responsible for scheduling any make up sessions with their Cosmetology teacher for any additional absences. TARDINESS Five (5) cumulative tardy days equals one absence. (Being tardy means not being in the classroom when the second bell rings.) Excessive tardiness will jeopardize a student s chance for success and may result in disciplinary action.

4 Cosmetology Fact Sheet Cosmetology I Hours Requirements: 500 hours needed 1. School Year 180 days x 2hours & 43 minutes = 489 hours Students will attend school each day that Morris County School of Technology is open regardless of home school closings. If a student is unable to attend Morris County School of Technology because of illness, the student must adhere to attendance requirements. 2) All Day Hair Show 2.43 hours Students will fill out a field trip permission form and arrange for their own transportation either arriving at MCST for the AM session or leaving MCST after the PM session. Cost: TBA per student Place: Jacob Javitz convention Center, New York Date: March 3) Home School Testing Missed Hours 15 hours Students must attend our After School Remediation sessions or use online Delmar Learning computer site. Practical Exam 5 hours Cost: Approx. $120 Date: June, 2013 * dates will be announced NOTE: Students will need a physical by their family or the school physician in the fall for their permit and another physical in the spring for the licensing exam. c) US Social Security Card issued to student only. 5 UNIFORM REGULATIONS **Mandatory to have for the first Day of school Students must be dressed in complete uniform consisting of: Black scrub top Black scrub pants White or Black leather rubber soled shoes (clogs, open backed, canvas or cloth shoes are not acceptable. Uniforms must be washed regularly. Shoes must be clean and polished. Bandannas, jeans, sweatshirts, sweaters, hooded sweatshirts, etc. are not acceptable.. Students should be professionally groomed at all times. Students not in proper uniform will not be permitted to participate in lab activities, resulting in a zero for that day and hours for the day will not be issued. Second violation of the uniform policy will result in referral the administrator for discipline and a phone conference with parent/guardian. * Uniforms are available at Walmart, Kmart, Life Uniforms, etc Return the signed/initialed documents to school on the first day. 6 GRADING CRITERIA Cosmetology I and Cosmetology II The following percentages will be assigned to the final grade earned: Theory (Includes test grades) 50% Laboratory (Includes clinic) 30% Homework/Project (Must be submitted on date assigned for credit) 10% Class Participation 10% The Final Examination is equivalent to one marking period grade and will be averaged into the final grade. The Final examination must be passed with a score of 75 or better. LABORATORY RUBRIC Each week students will receive lab points for behavior, participation, completion of assignments, preparedness and attendance, time management, and self motivation of time. 10 Points for practical assignment, professional behavior, time management. 5 Points for preparedness (required full uniform & tools) 5 Points for clean Up Salon Manager (participation) Students will receive a 0 for any day not in attendance. It is the student s responsibility to make up any missed hours by contacted his/her teacher. COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM RULES AND REGULATIONS The following list of rules has been developed to provide a safe and productive setting in which you may gain valuable skills. It is important that you clearly understand these expectations. 1. Each student is expected to report to class promptly. Upon arrival, report directly to the locker room, change into your uniform and arrive in class before the second bell. 2. You are not permitted to: a. chew gum in class; b. bring food into the locker room or classroom area; c. cell phones, wallets, keys and purses are to be locked in your assigned locker. 3. You have purchased a student kit. Kits are to be kept in your locker. Nothing is to be removed from your kit or taken home. All lost items must be replaced promptly, at your own

7 expense. Borrowing equipment s unnecessary and not permitted. (There will be unannounced kit inspections.) It is important that you maintain your tools properly and that they remain in school so you will be properly prepared to participate in lab. 4. A student will be assigned, on a weekly basis, to perform the task of class manager. As manager you will be responsible for: a. Post job assignments for the week to classmates; b. Checking and approving clean up assignments; c. Dismissing students to the locker room; The following pertains to Cosmetology II students only: c. Signing in clients on clinic days; d. Collecting payment; e. Balancing the cash box. No student is to leave the classroom to change before completing the assigned duty. After changing, report directly back to class (attendance will be taken). 5. Keep lockers clean and locked; Only school issued locks may be used; Drinks or food are not permitted in the locker room. 6. Mannequins are the property of the Board of Education. They are not to be taken out of school. They are to be used for assigned lab work only. Mannequins are the responsibility of the students to whom they are assigned. 7. All students are expected to sit as models for classmates, modeling for every aspect of Cosmetology. There are no exceptions. Failure to participate will result in a grade of zero for the day and referral to the Director of Athletics and Student Activities. 8. You will be working in a professional environment and you are expected to conduct yourself as a professional. Students may receive high school credit but will not receive eligibility for licensure if the requirements from the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology are not satisfied. Following these rules and regulations will contribute to a safe and enjoyable year.
