1 Issue No January 2018 Dear Parents Happy New Year to everyone! We have a busy few weeks coming up with entrance exams on the next two Saturdays and internal mock exams for Years 11 and 13. This evening, the House Music solo finalists will be performing in the QEH Theatre an opportunity to hear some outstanding young musicians and I hope that many of you will come along and support. In addition many other pupils have offers from top Universities. We publish a full list of leavers destinations in the Prize Giving programme and in the Elizabethan. Please come along and support these young musicians who will be performing a wide variety of repertoire. The results of the preliminary rounds and the finalists performances will be carried forward to the Choirs and Ensembles evening on Friday 2 February, when the winning House will be announced. Mr E Gent Director of Music Host Families Wanted In February 2018, a small group of pupils from China will be visiting QEH for a week. In order for them to get as much out of the trip as possible we would like to offer them the opportunity to stay with the families of QEH pupils. This will be a great chance to meet international students and help them to improve their English while in the UK. If you are interested or would like more information please contact Mr Waldron. An enriching fourteen weeks By the end of the Autumn Term, the 331 boys in Year 7-10 had completed their first term of Enrichment and are now half-way through their scheduled activities and sessions for the academic year. The final seven weeks of the term included: Mindfulness sessions and Mental Health workshops for Year 7 during their Mental Wellbeing module, along with volunteering with Avon Wildlife Trust. A variety of creative activities with Year 8, including presentation and thinking skills, climate change analysis and stop-gap animations. Each form has also visited We The Curious to embrace their inner creativity. A Physical Wellbeing module for Year 9 that has seen the boys lighting fires and building shelters at Belmont Wood, making pancakes in the kitchens and testing their fitness at Redland Tennis Club. Nurse Burns and Mrs Conquest have also delivered a comprehensive workshop to each form educating them on Sexual Health. Informative sessions on e-safety, drug use and consent delivered to Year 10 during their Personal Development module. The boys will now be moving on to the following: Year 7 will be completing their Physical Wellbeing module, with sessions in the kitchens and at Belmont Wood; Year 8 s Mental Wellbeing module will see the boys practice Yoga and develop their awareness of mental health issues; Year 9 have a variety of pastoral workshops as part of their Personal Development module; the boys in Year 10 have chosen two four-week creativity workshops from a list that include journalism, coding and music production. 2 Army 01 Careers Phoenix Casting Anyone in Years 9 13 who is interested in a career in the Army, please make an appointment via the School Office to see Mr Jonathan Ingledew when he visits on Monday 22 January. Phoenix Casting is a Bristol and Cardiff based company that supply extras and featured artists for television and film, as well as a number of other types of production from online/corporate videos to photographic work. Duke of Edinburgh Awards Congratulations to the following students for achieving the following awards: Bronze William Everingham Max Radford Silver Yuqi Cheng Finlay Yates Reuben Hothersall Certificates will be awarded in due course. Mr A Calder Head of Outdoor Pursuits Bouldering League Round two of the South West Schools Bouldering League took place on 4 December but the results have only just come in. QEH have maintained their second place in both the Senior Boys (Years 10 to 13) and Junior Boys (Years 7 to 9) competitions. There was some excellent climbing by many individuals, but particular congratulations to Tom Spencer who is currently fourth out of 33 in the senior individual competition, despite only being in year 10, and Richard Tothill who is in third place in the junior individual competition. Mr M Sloan 6 Nations Challenge Predict the winners of all 15 matches in the 6 Nations! The most accurate will win a prize! They will be holding their annual registration in Bristol from 5th-17th February and are keen to recruit some new young faces working through Phoenix on local productions. This could be an opportunity for students interested in Drama to gain some on set experience and insight into the professional life of TV and film. They register 16+, so are ideally hoping to target Sixth Form students, though any GCSE students are welcome to register now also, although no work will be offered until all exams are completed in July. Airline Pilot Training 2018 There is a careers event for aspiring pilots at Stratford Girls Grammar School (CV37 9HA) on Saturday 3rd February 2018 between 10:00 and 15:00. This is an ideal opportunity for students (and their families) to find out more about the airline industry; how to train as an airline pilot and the long term and varied career opportunities a role in commercial aviation offers. APT 2018 is an opportunity to talk to current airline pilots, who are at varying stages of their careers, and hear what it is like to do the job for a living. The pilots supporting the event fly for airlines from across Europe; they are there to share their own personal experiences as well as provide information and answer questions. This is a free entry event, so there is no cost involved, but please register prior to going along. For more information please visit: 2 entry - you can enter as many times as you like.
