2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Our mission is to create a hub for the Richmond Hispanic/Latino community that opens opportunities for economic and social integration, family success, and community leadership. Background The Sacred Heart Center, founded by a Jesuit priest in 1990, is a non-profit community center working collaboratively with the surrounding neighborhoods of South Richmond. The Center has been known for collaborative community programming and high quality early childhood programs. In 2010, in response to the changing demographics of the neighborhood, the Sacred Heart Center refocused its programming to serve a growing Hispanic community. Our mission is to create a community hub serving Richmond's Hispanic/Latinos, building on the strengths of the community and valuing cultural diversity while fostering opportunities for economic integration, self realization and community leadership. Our current focus is adult and youth education designed to strengthen families, create support communities, and open opportunities for adults to learn English, further their education in their own language, or learn life skills important for success in a new country. Our courses include ESL, GED in Spanish, Family Literacy, College and Career Bound, Citizenship Preparation classes, and our Latino Leadership Institute. Other classes and services through community partnerships include health education, life skills, classes in legal rights and responsibilities, as well as food assistance, mental health support, consular ID services, and tax preparation. The Center is also a gathering place for local service providers to network, share information, and best practices. Impact Sacred Heart Center is one of the only organizations in the Richmond area dedicated to serving the low and moderate income Latino population. The Richmond area offers limited services that target Latino families. Many area service organizations do not have staff that speak Spanish, or have not yet implemented culturallyappropriate services that are welcoming to Latino families and individuals. SHC program participants often speak of finding a sense of community and belonging at the SHC of finding their place in Richmond. Over the last 5-6 years, as the SHC has grown exponentially with strong educational programs, including ESL, GED prep in Spanish, basic literacy, citizenship exam prep, leadership, and children's programs like summer camp, preschool preparation, college/career bound and excell for recently arrived teenagers, there has also been a high demand for overall services as the Latino community also continues to grow in the Richmond Metro Area. In fiscal year , the SHC enrolled over 500 students in our core educational programs and served over 6,400 community members through our various partnerships with service providers as part of our community hub work. Because it is a trusted organization, the SHC has become a community hub, and many non-profit partners provide services at the SHC to families and individuals. We rely on relationships with entities such as Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Richmond, Bon Secours Health Systems the Mexican, El Salvadorian, Guatemalan and Honduran Consulates, Richmond Public Schools, to provide services such as food assistance, medical care, mental health counseling, academies and training programs, consular identification services, legal assistance, tax services, and other services that are offered in the SHC facilities. Families that participate receive needed services and learn how to navigate the service systems, thus building their own skills for future use in accessing services. Needs A primary need for the Sacred Heart Center is to build staff and Board capacity as well as programs to meet a growing need. Funding priorities include 1) the sustainability of current staff and programs (est $400,000), 2) sponsorships to support expansion of the College and Career Bound program (est $35,000) 3) sponsorship for 45 children to attend our dual- language summer enrichment experience called Cielito Lindo (est $20,000) 4) sponsorship to expand our youth programs, with and art and music pilot program (est $40,000). 2
3 CEO/Executive Director Statement The Sacred Heart Center has long been a beacon of hope and has offered people a place to belong, thus creating community. True to its tradition, the Sacred Heart Center today is providing hope in Richmond's Latino/Hispanic community. We see that the success of the Richmond area's Hispanic/Latino community as vital to the future success of our region as a whole. Therefore, our mission is to open opportunities for individuals and families within this community to acquire the skills that will allow them to reach their academic, social, and economic potential. Our vision is a vibrant urban community in which Latino families and individuals are included and invited to offer their individual and collective gifts to contribute to the economic energy, diverse cultural fabric, and spiritual wholeness of our community. Areas Of Service Areas Served Areas Metro Richmond The Sacred Heart Center, located in South Richmond, serves the Jefferson Davis and Hull Street corridors, but also draws participants from the wider metropolitan area, including Henrico, Hanover and Chesterfield counties.
