The package serves as a reminder from home to students that their family is thinking of them, and supporting them, as they finish up their semester. The package includes a variety of snack items such as fruit, cheese, granola bars, almonds and even coupons to nearby eating establishments. We invite you to participate in this tradition. You can support the student in your life, his or her roommate, AND help others at the same time! The price is $25 per care package and the funds generate support for the Drury Women s Auxiliary Scholarship Fund.

Friday, Jan. 27 Last Day to Add a Course Friday, Jan. 27 Order Care Packages Online Campus Calendar Spring Internship Deadline Seasonal Student Issues There s a seasonal ebb and flow when it comes to student issues. Here are a few things your student may be experiencing this month: Roommate problems and floor tension Academic pressures due to procrastination,
workload, and lack of ability Burnout Not feeling like they have the stamina to keep up the pace through the finals Job search stress for holiday break Problems from increased alcohol consumption The deadline for students seeking credit for a Spring 2017 semester internship is January 24, Internship Information Lack of initiative to find new friends or activities because it seems social groups are already set up Concerns about going home at Thanksgiving time whether it s concern about seeing changes among old friends, how things will be with family members, or dealing with a romantic relationship Discover more insights to what you and your student may be experience during this season by visiting The Campus Link. Campus News Drury Named Military Friendly School for Sixth Year For the sixth year in a row, Victory Media has recognized Housing Updates Thanksgiving Break Smith, Wallace, Sunderland and the fraternity houses close for Thanksgiving Break at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22, and reopen at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27. Students who choose to stay must sign up in the housing office, FSC 120, the week prior to break. Students who stay will be charged an $18 per-night fee unless their permanent address is 200+ miles away from campus. Also, a coach, supervisor or advisor may request that the fee be waived for students who are required to stay on campus for approved Druryrelated functions. Apartment-style housing does not close for Thanksgiving Break. Break housing information can be found at Winter Break
Drury University as a Military Friendly School. The 2017 Military Friendly Schools list was announced today and honors the colleges, universities and trade schools doing the most to embrace America s military service members, veterans and their spouses as students. Foundation Grant to Help Drury Build New Theatre A significant grant award will help Drury University s Theatre Program construct a new performance space for student productions. Smith, Wallace, Sunderland and the fraternity houses close for Winter Break at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, and reopen at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 15. Students who choose to stay must sign up in the housing office, FSC 120, the week prior to break. Students will be charged an $18 per-night fee unless they meet the mileage waiver. Additionally, a coach, supervisor or advisor may request that the fee be waived for students who are required to stay on campus for approved Drury-related functions. Residents in apartmentstyle housing are not required to leave for Winter Break unless they will no longer be full-time day school students for the spring semester. The program has received a $150,000 grant from the Sunderland Foundation to build an all-new black box studio theater in O Bannon Hall, which is part of the Mabee Performing Arts Center. A black box theater is a highly flexible performance space that allows the seating configuration to be changed to meet the needs of the production. Is your student graduating in December, not enrolled full-time for the spring, studying abroad, or exempt for the spring semester? All fall only residents must pack their belongings, clean their units and formally check out of housing
after their finals. At least one week before moveout, students should contact their residence life staff member to schedule a check-out appointment. After your student checks out, they should submit their keys to Security before heading home. Students who do not schedule or attend their appointment will be charged a $100 improper check-out fee in addition to any cleaning/damage charges. Students living in a residence hall or fraternity house should contact their resident director for an appointment, and apartment-style residents should contact the area director. Details regarding housing check-out procedures can be found at Non-graduates must check out within 24 hours of their last final or before 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16 (whichever comes first). December graduates must check out before 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18 Counseling & Disability Support Services
Your College Student is Coming Home for the Holidays! Having your college student home for the holidays will be a gift. But it can sometimes cause rocky times for parents and the students. Students will be returning home after completing a very stressful time in the semester. The last 3-4 weeks of the semester requires students to finish papers, projects, and take final exams. The holidays are a joyous time for most families. However, Thanksgiving Break comes at a very stressful time in the midst of scholarly activity, and the Christmas holiday break often is full of stress management resulting from the stress of completing classes successfully. The end of the semester is associated with not sleeping, eating, and caring for oneself as students should. Don t be surprised to greet an exhausted and cranky student when they arrive home. It may take a couple of days to recognize this student as your loving child home for the holidays.
Once your student wakes up from their slumber and regains their excitement for the family holidays, here are a few topics of discussion you may wish to engage your student with: Budget Are you and your student on track for appropriate spending? How was their spending behavior during the fall semester? Review of Fall Semester Classes Talk with your student about his or her fall semester. Were they challenged to doing their academic best? Ask them questions about their classes and ask them to clarify their thoughts. Why can be a great place to start. Keep in mind that they have had their world view challenged over the past three months. Most likely, they are
developing their thoughts and ideas in their own way. This is great and should be celebrated. Expectations Continue to have conversations with your student about what success looks like for them while in college. Help them frame what their idea of success is while at the same time providing realistic goals and expectations for him or her for the spring semester. Ed Derr LPC, NCC Director of Counseling and Disability Support Services Student Financial Services With spring registration beginning in November, it s important to remember to sign up for a Nelnet payment plan after you register for classes. Student Financial Services will mail out spring prebills in mid-december, but spring semester balances and Nelnet payment plans are available through MyDrury in mid-to late November. Drury partnered with Nelnet Business Solutions to provide an online payment plan that makes it easier for students and their families to pay their semester bill and potentially reduce their overall
student loans. When students and their families sign up for the online payment plan, the program helps families determine how they can spread their monthly payments in order to be fully paid by registration time for the next semester. The payment plan will be available mid-to late November and the first payment for the spring semester is December 5, 2016 and the last payment is April 5, Drury University s payment policy requires that all students either be paid in full (including scholarships and pending financial aid) or be current on a payment plan for any balance exceeding scholarships and financial aid by January 5, The cost to participate in the payment plan is $40 each semester. The payment methods are automatic bank payment (ACH) or credit/debit card (MasterCard, Discover, VISA and American Express are accepted). An additional fee will be assessed for credit/debit cards). Payments are processed on the 5th of each month and will continue until the balance is paid in full. communication of each step will be sent to the student and family as requested. Students who have a balance on their account and
are wait- ing on financial aid to cover the balance must still sign up for a Nelnet payment plan. Many students are able to sign up on a Pending Aid payment plan which tells the University you are waiting on loans, grants and scholarships to cover your balance. There is no fee for the Pending Aid agreement AS LONG AS your financial aid comes in before the first payment due date (please pay attention to your first payment date). For more information regarding Drury s payment plan, go to If you have questions, please contact Drury Student Financial Services at (417) or come visit us in the Student Financial Services office in Burnham Hall. Community Outreach & Leadership Development We offer a wide range of resources and programs designed to connect students to the community through meaningful service while developing important leadership skills. The following may be of interest to your Drury student: Leadership Certificate Program
Students learn to be effective leaders through engaging courses and experiences that promote personal and professional development and social responsibility. Completing the program fulfills both Engaged Learning graduation requirements and is officially noted on academic transcripts. Classes incur no additional costs for full-time day students. Have your student if interested. Summit Park Leadership Community Students apply as teams of four or eight to live together their sophomore year in Summit Park apartments and implement a service-learning project. This rewarding experience helps students gain valuable leadership and teamwork skills. It fulfills one Engaged Learning graduation requirement and two requirements for the Leadership Drury Certificate. Summit Park is one of Drury s most affordable apartment options and there is a special application process. Visit for application information and FAQs. Summit Park Information The Drury Alternative Break Program
This program offers affordable volunteer trips that occur over fall and spring break for full-time undergraduate Drury students. Two trips will occur over the 2017 spring break and both fulfill an Engaged Learning graduation requirement. One group will travel to Vail, Colorado to learn about youth development and education. The other group will travel to Memphis, Tennessee to learn about environmental sustainability and the Tennessee waterways. Trip fees are $50 per participant. Trip fees cover food for the week, housing, gas, transportation and free time activities. Limited fee waivers are available for those with a financial need. Alternative Break Information Financial Aid Financial aid is a critical part of the college experience. Be mindful of the deadlines and policies that can make funding a college education possible. One continual reminder is that, to qualify for financial aid, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior
to every academic year. If your financial package includes need-based aid (Pell Grant, SEOG, Access Missouri, college work study or loans), it is your responsibility to file the FAFSA after October 1, 2016 for the school year. We encourage you to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) to more quickly and accurately complete your FAFSA. If you are from the state of Missouri, your FAFSA must be processed before February 1, 2017 to be eligible for Access Missouri. Most Drury scholarships are renewed after each academic year as long as a student remains in good academic standing. If a student does not remain in good academic standing, he/she compromises that scholarship for the next academic year. There is an appeals process, and a student can take summer classes (at Drury) to regain good academic standing. For more information or specific answers to your questions, contact the Financial Aid Office at (417)
Drury's Parent Connection is a quarterly newsletter aimed at keeping parents of Drury students aware of ongoing events, important dates, and opportunities for Drury students. The Parent Connection is written and published by the Division of Student Services. For comments regarding the Parent Connection, contact Emily Givens, Director of Student Life, at (417) or via at egivens@drury.edu.
