3 Introduction to ROP The Regional Occupational Program (ROP) and the Career and Technical Preparation Department (C&TP) provide tuition free career preparation courses for high school students. These classes give students a great opportunity to explore possible careers, begin training in a particular field, and build skills leading to initial employment and/or college education upon high school graduation. Students receive high school credits and may even earn community college credits in selected classes while attending ROP classes. After completing the required number of course hours, the student will earn a certificate. Some classes have a Community Classroom (CC unpaid internship) or Cooperative Vocational Education (CVE paid internship) component to the training. Both require that after being in the classroom a student will go to a worksite for training 4 days a week. Students will be responsible for providing their own transportation when going to and from the worksite. Often students start out with a CC (unpaid) internship. After reaching a certain skill level some students will get a CVE (paid) internship. During the CVE internship student are paid for on-thejob hours only. ROP CC and CVE programs have been proven to be very effective in providing instruction using both classroom and business setting instruction. The importance of on-the-job training as a way of developing solid job skills has been long recognized. 4 ROP Internship Roles and Responsibilities The ROP Internship provides an opportunity for each student to gain career and technical skills and to earn school credit. The following describes the imporance of each individual in the process: the parent, the student, the ROP instructor and the training site supervisor. The Parent Must sign the ROP Application to acknowledge consent so student can go to their offcampus class or work site. Be aware interns in CC internships are not paid. Be aware that students are responsible for transportation to and from the worksite. Be aware that students who use their privately owned automobiles for transportation are responsible for carrying their own automobile liability insurance. Sign and return documents provided. If you have any questions on any document please contact the instructor for clarification. The Student: Enters the program to learn as much as the employer and teacher can provide in occupational information, skills, and good work habits. Keeps regular attendance and notifies worksite training supervisor and instructor when unable to attend. Shows honesty, punctuality, courtesy, a good work attitude, proper health and grooming habits, a willing to learn, and to wear the proper uniform (if necessary). Consults teacher about any difficulties at the training site. Observes the rules and regulations of the school and training site. Carries out assigned activities and duties at the training site. Must attend classroom training one day a week. The ROP Teacher: Provides classroom instruction that teaches the skills, regulations, and safety procedures required on the job. Finds and supervises training sites for students. When students are at their work sites, provides classroom instruction one day a week. Prepares and maintains necessary paperwork. Makes a minimum of one site visit every three weeks for CC and every four weeks for CVE to observe and check with training supervisor, to document all site visits, and to help with the student evaluation at the end of the class. Assists the students in career planning and guidance. Monitors and evaluates student participation. The Training Site Supervisor: Works with the teacher to make sure the student learns a variety of work related skills. Follows all federal and state regulations regarding employment. Provides experience so the intern can obtain their career objective. Evaluates the student s progress on the job. -2-
5 Student Eligibility Students must be a minimum of 16 years of age or in grade 11. Students may participate in internship training only up to the maximum hours in the course outline. A CVE intern must be employed a minimum of eight hours weekly in a job directly related to the ROP course. Miscellaneous: Safety equipment is the responsibility of the training site. -3-
6 Forms As parent/guardian of an ROP student, you may be required to sign one or more of the following forms. ROP Application: High school students are required to sign the ROP Application. The parent/guardian will be required to sign the ROP Application if the student leaves their home school to attend class or go to a work site location. This form provides necessary information for federal funding of the ROP Program. Work Permit: Students under the age of 18 are required to obtain a work permit if participating in a CVE (Paid) internship. The student will obtain a work permit from his or her school prior to beginning the CVE internship. Individual Training Site Agreement: The Individual Training Site Agreement is an agreement between the ROP Instructor, student and worksite. The form includes the student s information, worksite contact information and worksite schedule. This form needs to be signed by the student, parent/guardian, ROP Instructor and Worksite supervisor. Consent for Medical Treatment/Release of Records: This form is required in the event of an emergency when the student is at a worksite. This provides necessary contact information should an emergency arise. Both the student and parent/guardian are required to complete and sign this form. Tuberculosis Skin Test If a student is working at a medical facility, school food facility or child care center they may be required to take a tuberculosis skin test. Parent/guardians are required to give their permission prior to a student being allowed to be given the test. If the student and/or parent does not want the test given the student will be requested to change their worksite location or, if necessary, the ROP classes to one that does not require the test. -4-
7 Definitions Community Classroom (CC) unpaid internship at business, industry, and public agency sites to assist students in acquiring skills necessary to obtain entry-level employment. Community Classroom Training Site is the business, industry, or public agency location where students receive their unpaid internship experience. Cooperative Vocational Education (CVE) paid training experiences to assists students in acquiring skills necessary to obtain employment. Cooperative Vocational Education Training Site is the business, industry, or public agency location where students receive their paid training experience. Employer is the individual accepting the student as an intern into his or her business. Home School School student is registered to attend on a daily basis. Intern is the student who is learning an occupation while training with an employer. Internship is the situation in which students apply their existing skills while training with an employer for a specified period of time to learn about a particular occupation. Training Site Supervisor is the employer who works at the worksite who supervises and supports the intern in the learning process. -5-
