A Letter from the Dean I am proud to share with you the Annual Giving Impact Report that celebrates your outstanding support of Brooklyn Law School. Many graduates and friends chose to give to the Law School this past year and we experienced the biggest growth in participation that our school has ever seen. Your unprecedented engagement signals that the strength and unity of the Brooklyn Law community are at an all-time high. At a time when we need your help more than ever, you turned out in greater numbers than ever before to support financial aid for our faculty recruitment and retention, and our innovative programs and centers. Your support has a profound impact: it fuels nothing less than our power to change the face of legal education. Because of you, two-thirds of our students this year received scholarship and aid that make their education at Brooklyn Law School possible. Because of you, they will be taught by a faculty nationally recognized for scholarly and teaching excellence. Because of your support, our students will also have the opportunity to participate in one of the most comprehensive clinical education programs in the country. And finally, because of you, we can continue to advance our vision of a law school that is both within reach for hard-working students from all backgrounds and produces some of the highest caliber lawyers practicing anywhere in the world. As part of our effort to make a world-class legal education more accessible and affordable, we reduced tuition, increased scholarship support, and initiated generous post-graduate support such as the first-of-its kind Bridge to Success program. We also are tailoring our curriculum with bespoke options to meet the needs of our students. We are the only law school in the New York City metropolitan area to offer a range of flexible options to earn a law degree over the course of two, three, or four years. Another major change we instituted this year was to open membership to the Alumni Association to all graduates, free of charge. We want to make it easier for our global community of remarkable alumni to engage and connect with one another and Brooklyn Law School and to take advantage of all the benefits provided by the Alumni Association. Thank you for giving back, for your dedication to Brooklyn Law School, and for your decision to respond with bold action to our call for support. On behalf of the entire Brooklyn Law community, please accept my sincere gratitude and appreciation. I hope that you will continue to support us again this year and in the years to come in our endeavor to advance the excellence for which Brooklyn Law School is known. Sincerely, Nicholas W. Allard President, Joseph Crea Dean and Professor of Law
2 ANNUAL GIVING IMPACT REPORT ANNUAL FUND Unprecedented Participation and Generosity from Hundreds of Alumni and Friends Supported Our Greatest Needs by Raising $870,500 1, % INCREASE $870, % INCREASE $680, DOLLARS DONORS Hundreds of new donors contributed to the Annual Fund this year, increasing alumni participation by 75 percent over last year. This is the biggest leap our Annual Fund has ever achieved. You also contributed nearly 30 percent more in gifts and pledges over last year. Our alumni are more engaged than ever. You have an impact on Brooklyn Law School in very tangible ways. Your gifts allowed us to award more scholarships, recruit new world-class faculty, and provide even more enriching clinical opportunities to our students in the very same year that we reduced tuition.

4 ANNUAL GIVING IMPACT REPORT THE IMPACT OF GIVING BACK CROSSES GENERATIONS: JACK GLASER 60 AND JOEL GLASER 01 Jack Glaser, Senior Founding Partner at Trolman, Glaser, & Lichtman, graduated from Brooklyn Law School in Over the decades since then, he has built an esteemed and well-respected practice as a plaintiff s personal injury lawyer, representing victims of serious accidents and medical malpractice his entire career. He has tried cases to verdict in nearly every trial court in New York City and has argued appeals in the Appellate Division and in the Court of Appeals, the highest court in New York State. With nearly fifty years of practice behind him, Mr. Glaser generously created a current use scholarship. Establishing a scholarship to help qualified students attend our alma mater is especially gratifying, he said. This donation was motivated by a desire to support BLS, whose role was vital in launching my own long and successful career as a personal injury lawyer. But his scholarship gift has a unique purpose that makes it all the more poignant. In making this gift, Glaser directed that it be targeted for the benefit of qualified Latino and Latina students. Like Glaser, for the most part, the students to whom this scholarship is dedicated are also first generation immigrants, seeking upward mobility and a rewarding career. These students and I share a common background, said Glaser. I am the son of working class immigrants and was the first to attend college and law school. What s more, Glaser says the gift is a way to give back to his clients. I view this as an opportunity to express my gratitude to the Hispanic community as they constituted the majority of my clients, he said. Time after time they placed their confidence in me. I am glad now to give something back. What better place to educate deserving students than Brooklyn Law School? The apple does not fall far from the tree. Mr. Glaser s son Joel graduated from the Law School in 2001 and is also a partner at Trolman, Glaser & Lichtman, P.C. Like his father, Joel is also a dedicated and generous donor to Brooklyn Law School. For the younger Glaser, the giving is also personal. My father, and mentor, is a graduate of the class of 1960, said Joel. Giving back honors him and his great admiration for the institution that set him on course to a marvelously rewarding career. It is no coincidence that a founding member of one of New York s preeminent personal injury law firms is an alumnus. As an underprivileged kid from the Bronx, when many opportunities were foreclosed to him, Brooklyn Law School provided him with a great legal education for a great value. I have always remained cognizant of where my legal roots sprouted from. Today, he continues to honor the legacy of his legal education by being a proud member of the 1901 Society. Giving back is just one more way to say thank you to my father and BLS. This donation was motivated by a desire to support BLS, whose role was vital in launching my own long and successful career as a personal injury lawyer. Jack Glaser 60
ANNUAL GIIVNG IMPACT REPORT 5 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Brooklyn Law School was enormously important to my mother and was and remains so to me. With the Margaret A. Berger Scholarship, my family and I hope to help future generations of the BLS family fittingly, students with a demonstrated interest in evidence or civil procedure afford to pursue goals meaningful to them. My mother Margaret continually expressed concern over law school debt and the impact that indebtedness could have on students professional and personal choices. For us, this is an extremely satisfying tribute to Margaret and her legacy. David A. Berger 89 Honoring a Family Legacy by Aiding Generations to Come MARGARET A. BERGER SCHOLARSHIP David Berger 89 and his brother Joshua Berger established an endowed scholarship, with the help of family and friends, in memory of their mother, Professor Margaret A. Berger. Professor Berger was widely recognized as one of the nation s leading evidence and civil procedure scholars and is still renowned for her pioneering work in the field of scientific evidence. She was an outstanding teacher, mentor, and inspiration $ 156M Current endowment as of March 2016 $ 100,000 to many, and a supportive colleague who contributed immeasurably to Brooklyn Law School over her 37-year tenure. She also was a passionate reader, opera goer, Mets fan, gourmet cook, loving family member, and treasured friend. The scholarship is to be awarded to a student who demonstrates exceptional achievement in the law of evidence or civil procedure. 155 Gift to establish a new endowed scholarship Total number of endowed scholarships Scholarships Open Doors for Exceptional Students Lillian Smith s passion for human rights has included work with HIV/AIDS service groups, an internship with international women s human rights organization MADRE, volunteering with Citizens Union of New York, and tutoring at P.S. 188 on the Lower East Side. An Edward V. Sparer Public Interest Law Fellow, Smith also served as editor-inchief of the Brooklyn Law Review and was a member of the team that placed in the world s top 10 at the 2016 International Criminal Court Moot Competition. Smith received the 2016 Faculty Prize and is currently clerking in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Funding my own education has always been a struggle for me, and the only way I was able to attend undergraduate school and now law school is through the generosity of donors. Lillian Smith 16 Smith was a recipient of the Judge Shirley Wohl Kram Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded each year to a deserving woman student who exhibits an interest in public or government service.
6 ANNUAL GIVING IMPACT REPORT THE DEAN S CHALLENGE/CLASS GIFT OF 2016 A Strong Showing from the Newest Class of Brooklyn Law School Lawyers Members of the Class of 2016 left Brooklyn Law School in a better place in many ways. They infused our School with new energy and ideas, provided thousands of hours of legal assistance to our community, challenged our faculty to examine the law from new angles and provided a generous head-start to the students coming up behind you. More than half of the Class of 2016 made a gift to support student scholarships. As part of the annual Dean s Challenge, President & Dean Nick Allard matched the class gift with a personal gift of his own. The Dean s Challenge helps ensure that more incoming students will receive the support they need to make their own impact on the Law School and the legal profession at large. 57 % Class of 2016 participation in the Dean s Challenge GOLD DONORS: Recent Graduates Give Back Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) came together this year to ensure that the next generation of Brooklyn Law School graduates benefits from the same excellent preparation you received. They gave 13 percent more than last year a significant increase, especially for young alumni in career-building years. Collective generosity and commitment strengthens the future of the School and the students, and sets a commendable example for recent alumni. GOLD gifts to the Annual Fund primarily go toward financial aid our top fundraising priority. These gifts create an immediate legacy of direct assistance to the next generation of Brooklyn Law students. INCREASE IN GOLD GIFTS $46,000 $52,000 GIVING DAY: A SURGE OF SUPPORT Our second annual Giving Day took place on March 30, 2016 with a whirlwind of social media activity and online giving. Spurred on by a challenge gift from Francis J. Aquila 83 alumni raised $401,000 in a single day, $43,000 more than on Giving Day in Save the Date! Giving Day 2017 April 4, 2017 #BLSGivingDay DOLLARS
ANNUAL GIVING IMPACT REPORT 7 CENTERS & PROGRAMS Forward-Thinking Donors Invested in Thought Leadership Brooklyn Law School is renowned for innovative, entrepreneurial programs and centers and many generous individuals this year made sure that tradition will continue. Alumni and friends invested in the Law School s influential scholarship and programs, either by designating their Annual Fund gift to the Academic Impact Fund or by making leadership-level gifts directly to a specific program. Your investment supported our students, underwrote important faculty research and scholarship on critical legal issues, increased public dialogue through events, symposia, and roundtables, and facilitated thousands of hours of pro bono work in the community. BROOKLYN LAW CENTERS Block Center for International Business Law Center for Health, Science & Public Policy Center for Law, Language & Cognition Center for the Study of Business Law & Regulation CUBE: Center for Urban Business Entrepreneurship Center for Criminal Justice The partners I work for value the entrepreneurial spirit imbued from my time at Brooklyn. Partners and firms are looking for associates that can hit the ground running and already have exposure to the tasks and legal work they will handle as a full-time attorney. Even as a junior associate, I felt readily equipped to take on business development initiatives and think creatively to solve our clients issues. Elizabeth McKenzie 13, Associate, Jones Day CENTER SNAPSHOT: YOUR GIVING IMPACT ON CUBE 430 Students participated in CUBE s clinics, courses, and programs WHY I GIVE 266 Businesses received services and participated in CUBE programming 17,511 Hours of pro bono legal services were provided to the business community through CUBE What I ve learned through 38 years of practice is that civility, integrity and professionalism are what differentiates the highest level of lawyers and I aspire to be that kind of lawyer. And if I can help others aspire to that as well, it matters to me. Matthew E. Swaya 81
