4 1 Scope Master s Examinati Regulatis These Masters s Examinati Regulatis apply Master s Programme Social Anthropology/Sozialanthropologie at the University of Münster. 2 Aim Programme and Purpose Examinati (1) 1 Building a first cycle degree, the Master s Programme is intended to equip students with a greater depth of academic applicati and, taking account requirements professial world, with knowledge, skills and methods in the field of Social Anthropology/Ethnology in such way as to enable them to assess complex academic problems independently and respsibly and apply the solutis found. 2 In the process, social anthropological issues and theories will be taught in the ctext ir applicability in research settings. 3 The programme is to enable students to orientate themselves in interacti with cultural and social differences, to grasp these differences in a researching, understanding and ethically respsible way, and to render the research results in publishable forms. 4 In this, the comparis of societies forms the basic methodological approach. 5 The aim is the ability to obtain academic results and to cvey these, both in the field Humanities and Cultural Sciences and in the wider public. 6 Students are not ly supposed to acquire intercultural competence and to raise their awareness culturally other for themselves but also to be able to cvey these findings in a way that is relevant to society. 7 The degree course supports and gives guidance to empirical, self-organised research which may be cducted in or outside of Germany/the place of study and which may serve as the basis for the master s thesis. (2) The master s is to establish whether the students have acquired the necessary knowledge to be applied the job, and particularly in the field of research and educati. 3 Master s Degree The degree of a Master of Arts (M.A.) will be awarded after successful graduati. 4 Admissi Programme Admissi degree course is regulated by the Admissis Regulatis for the Master s Programme in Social Anthropology/Sozialanthropologie University of Münster as amended from time to time. 5 Administrati Programme (1) 1 The Head Faculty of History/Philosophy (Dekan des Fachbereichs Geschichte/Philosophie, FB 08)/the Head of Faculty s Office is respsible for the organisati of s in the Master s Programme Social Anthropology/Sozialanthropologie. 2 This respsibility also involves the decisis any objectis that have been lodged.

5 (2) The Head of Faculty/Head of Faculty s Office may authorise members faculty to perform the tasks relating organisati s. (3) The Prüfungsamt (Examinatis Office) is agent Head of Faculty/Head of Faculty s Office. 6 Admissi Master s Examinati (1) 1 Admissi master s occurs via enrolment for the Master s Programme Social Anthropology/Sozialanthropologie at the University of Münster. 2 It is subject proviso that the student remains enrolled at the university. (2) Insofar as the admissi to certain courses depends the applicant possessing specific knowledge required for the study subject, this is laid down in the descripti s given in the Appendix present regulatis. 7 Durati, Workload and Organisati Programme (1) 1 The standard durati programme is two academic years. 2 One academic year is made up of two semesters. (2) 1 For a successful completi programme, 120 Leistungspunkte (LP, credits) are required. 2 Leistungspunkte are a quantitative measure student s total workload. 3 They comprise both the attendance of courses as well as the time spent preparatory and follow-up coursework (i.e. course attendance and study time), the efforts and preparati for s, including theses and term papers, and work placements, if applicable hours of work is the basis which e LP is obtained. 5 The workload required during e academic year amounts to 1,800 hours. 6 The entire degree course has a workload of 3,600 hours. 7 One LP is equivalent to e ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credit point. 8 Curriculum (1) The Master s Programme in Social Anthropology/Sozialanthropologie comprises the study following mandatory s as specified by the descripti of s in the Appendix: - Society-specific fundamentals of sociality - Research methods and communicati between societies - Enlarging up regial issues I - Enlarging up regial issues II - Fieldwork - Master s thesis (2) 1 The successful completi Master s Programme requires that 120 LP be obtained during the course studies. 2 Of these, the master s thesis accounts for 28 LP.

6 9 Types of Courses The following types of courses are offered: - lectures - seminars ctaining lecture elements, allowing lecturers to impart their knowledge in a compact way and students to expand their skills by way of presentatis and term papers. The ratio of lecture and seminar units depends the topics and the number of students. - seminars in which the students give presentatis - language courses - colloquia 10 Structure Programme and Examinati (1) 1 The programme has a modular structure. 2 Modules are study units defined by topic, ctent and durati that impart partial qualificatis which relate respective study aim; the partial qualificatis are specified in an educatial objective. 3 Modules may be composed of courses with different teaching and learning methods. 4 The standard scope of a ranges from 6 to 10 Semesterwochenstunden (SWS, hours of instructi per week). 5 Modules are made up of courses from usually e or several semesters, and also from different departments. 6 In accordance with the descriptis, there may be optis courses that have to be completed within a particular. (2) 1 The master s thesis is assigned and supervised by an examiner appointed in accordance with The candidate has the right to make a proposal as choice of supervisor assigning the topic as well as topic itself. (5) 1 Up justified applicati candidate, the period to complete the master s thesis may in exceptial cases be extended ce by a maximum of four weeks. 2 If there are serious grounds that csiderably impede the completi master s thesis or render it substantially more difficult or even impossible, the deadline may accordingly be extended up applicati candidate. 3 Serious grounds alg these lines may in particular be the grave illness candidate or unalterable technical reass. 4 Moreover, taking care of e s own children up to 12 years of age or the need to nurse or care for a spouse, a registered civil partner, or a direct relative or first-degree relative by marriage, if he/she is in need of care or assistance, may be csidered as serious grounds. 5 The Head of Faculty/Head of Faculty s Office decides an extensi in accordance with 12(5) sentences 1 and 2. 6 If required by the Head of Faculty/Head of Faculty s Office, the candidate has to prove the existence of serious grounds (by official medical certificate, if required). 7 In cases to which 12(5) sentence 2 applies, instead of granting an extensi period of completi, the Head of Faculty/Head of Faculty s Office may also assign a new topic for the master s thesis if the candidate has not been able to work the master s thesis for more than e year altogether. 8 In such a case, the assignment of a new topic is not regarded as a repetiti as defined by 17(4). (6) 1 With the csent Head of Faculty/Head of Faculty s Office, the master s thesis may be written in a language other than German. 2 The thesis must include a title page, a table of ctents as well as a list of

8 references and a bibliography. 3 Those passages thesis that have been quoted from other works either in full or indirectly must always be identified by giving the source borrowed passage. 4 The candidate will add thesis a written asserti which states that he/she has written the thesis his/her own and without using any sources and means other than those specified, and that he/she has indicated the quotatis; the same assurance also has to be given for tables, sketches, drawings, illustratis etc. 5 Furthermore, the candidate will add a written declarati of csent to his/her thesis being saved in a database for the purpose of detecting plagiarism and to its being compared with other texts and works for identificati of any analogies. 13 Acceptance and Grading Master s Thesis (1) 1 The master s thesis has to be submitted Prüfungsamt (Examinatis Office) by the due date in duplicate (typewritten, bound and paginated) as well as in electric form; the time of submissi is to be recorded in written form. 2 If the master s thesis is not submitted by the due date, it will be deemed d as a fail (5.0) in accordance with 22(1). (2) 1 The master s thesis is to be assessed and d by two examiners. 2 One examiners should be the pers who originally assigned the topic. 3 The secd examiner will be appointed by the Head of Faculty/Head of Faculty s Office; the candidate has the right to make a proposal in this respect. 4 Each grading is to be undertaken in accordance with 18(1) and justified in writing. 5 In accordance with 18(4) sentences (3) and (4), the thesis will be generated by the arithmetic average single assessments if their difference amounts to no more than If the difference amounts to more than 2.0, or if e s is a fail while the other is a pass or better, the Head of Faculty/Head of Faculty s Office will appoint a third examiner to the master s thesis. 7 In such a case, the thesis will be generated by the arithmetic average three s. 8 The thesis may ly then be d as pass (4.0) or better, however, if at least two s are pass (4.0) or better. (3) The grading procedure for the master s thesis is not to exceed eight weeks. 14 Examiners and Observers (1) For the required s and the master s thesis, the Head of Faculty/Head of Faculty s Office appoints the examiners and, where oral s are ccerned, the observers. (2) 1 Perss who are authorised examiners in accordance with 65(1) Hochschulgesetz Nordrhein- Westfalen (HG, Universities Act Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia ) may act as examiners if, and insofar as there are no compelling reass that require otherwise, they regularly hold relevant university courses in the subject to which the or the master s thesis refer. 2 The Head of Faculty/Head of Faculty s Office decides any exceptis. (3) Only those perss may be appointed as observers who have passed either a relevant Diplom or master s or a comparable or higher. (4) The examiners and observers are independent in their activity. (2) 1 Study periods as well as completed, passed or failed equivalent Studien- and Prüfungsleistungen which are from other degree courses at the University of Münster or other university and to which 15 (1) does not apply will normally be officially recognized up applicati, unless substantial differences are identified and these study periods and Studien- and Prüfungsleistungen are not equivalent. 2 Study periods as well as the completed, passed or failed Studien- and Prüfungsleistungen are equivalent if the Studien- and Prüfungsleistungen are essentially equivalent in ctent, workload and requirements to those degree course in questi. 3 In this respect, an overall view and an overall assessment is to be undertaken rather than a schematic comparis. 4 The Agreements Academic Recogniti as approved by the Standing Cference Ministers of Educati and Cultural Affairs (Kultusministerkferenz) and the German Rectors Cference (Hochschulrektorenkferenz) determine the equivalence of Studien- and Prüfungsleistungen obtained from universities outside Germany. 5 Also the Central Office for Foreign Educati (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen) may be csulted should there be doubts as to equivalence. (3) 15(1) and (2) apply accordingly recogniti of Studien- and Prüfungsleistungen completed in state-recognised distance learning study programmes, in distance learning units developed by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia together with the other German Länder or the federal state, at state or staterecognised universities of cooperative educati, or in further educati study programmes in accordance with 62 HG NRW,. (4) Achievements that have been made in the ctext of successfully completed school educati in relevant elective subjects at the Oberstufen-Kolleg Bielefeld will be recognised as Studienleistungen providing equivalence is proven. (5) 1 For students who, due to a placement test, are entitled to begin their studies in a higher semester, the knowledge and skills proven in the placement test will be csidered as part Studien- and

(7) 1 If achievements are recognised as Prüfungsleistungen, the s insofar as the grading systems are comparable are to be carried over and factored in calculati overall, where appropriate. 2 If the grading systems are incomparable, the assessment bestanden (»a pass«) will be recorded. 3 The accreditati will be indicated in the certificate. 4 If the recogniti of achievements made in incomparable grading systems results in an impossibility to generate a, then this will not be factored in calculati overall. 5 The student is required to submit the documents necessary for recogniti. 6 Prüfungsleistungen completed in n-comparable grading systems can ly be accredited up to a proporti of no more than 50%. (8) 1 The Head of Faculty/Head of Faculty s Office is respsible for recogniti. 2 The relevant faculty representatives are to be heard before equivalence is determined. (9) The student is to be informed about the decisi recogniti no later than four weeks after the applicati has been made and the required documents have been submitted. 16 Adjustments for Handicapped and Chrically Ill Students (1) 1 If a student credibly shows that due to chric illness or disability, he/she is not able to sit the Prüfungsleistungen (required s) in full or in part in their designated form or within the periods of specified in these Examinati Regulatis, then the Head of Faculty/Head of Faculty s Office will have to extend the period of completi for Prüfungsleistungen or the periods for taking s, or allow comparable Prüfungsleistungen in a form more suited student s special needs. 2 The same applies to Studienleistungen (coursework). (2) 1 At the request student, the faculty disabilities representative is to be involved in the decisis to be taken under 16(1). 2 If it is not possible to csult a disabilities representative at faculty level, the university disabilities representative is to be csulted. (3) 1 Submissi of appropriate evidence may be required to substantiate a chric illness or disability. 2 In particular, this may be a medical certificate or, if applicable, a certificate of disability. 17 Passing the Master s Examinati, Retaking the Examinati (1) 1 The master s has been passed if, in accordance with 8(2), 11 and the descripti of s, all s as well as the master s thesis have been passed with at least a of ausreichend/pass (4.0) ( 18(1)). 2 Also, 120 LP (credits) must have been obtained. (6) 1 If a student has ultimately failed the master s, he/she will, up applicati and submissi appropriate proof and the certificate of removal from the register of students, be issued a certificate stating his/her academic achievements and, if applicable, the s. 2 The certificate will be signed by the Head Faculty of History/Philosophy and stamped with the faculty seal. 18 Grading of Single Examinatis, Module Grades and Calculati of Overall Grade (1) 1 All Prüfungsleistungen (required s) are to receive a. (2) The master s certificate will bear the date day last Prüfungsleistung. (5) The master s certificate and the master s diploma are signed by the Head Faculty of History/Philosophy, then stamped with the faculty seal. 20 Diploma Supplement (1) 1 Together with the master s certificate the completi Master s Programme, the graduate will be issued with a diploma supplement and transcript. 2 The diploma supplement ctains informati about the individual study programme, the courses and s attended, the s taken, and the individual subject-related profile in the completed Master s Programme. (2) The diploma supplement will be issued in accordance with the recommendatis German Rectors Cference. 21 Access to Examinati Files 1 Up applicati, the student is allowed to inspect his/her work, the reports examiners and the correspding minutes after each Prüfungsleistung (required ) has been completed.

These regially oriented courses combine an introducti respective regi with topics that have proven themselves characteristic local societies or with topics that make research desiderata particularly apparent. Moreover, additial credits will be obtained in language courses supporting the chosen regial focus. The courses may be taken either at the Institute of Ethnology (Swahili, Thai, Indesian, Hindi) or at another institute (e.g. Arabic Studies, Sinology). In doing so, at least e seminar and four semester hours of a language course (possibly spanning several semesters) must be chosen from the same regi. Students are recommended to also attend at least e course from a regi other than their regial focus. For this reas, regially specific courses will be taught with particular focus the comparability and validity of models beyd the regial border. Basic knowledge about the applicati for research projects in the academic sector will also be imparted. iii) In a further course, students will be able to specify and diversify their thematic and methodical interests. The focus here is again the above topics, specifically emphasising the topic of Transcultural Psychiatry (iv). Visual Anthropology is a particular focus as regards methods (v). Visual Anthropology is designed as a twosemester course, supervising the making of small films in the third semester. Skills acquired: At the end, students will be able to develop fields of research their own as well as to cceptualise research questis and elaborate them in orientati to method. This involves the ability to cnect universal theories and specific research questis, up to and including interview ctents. This will be de in the form of research plans for the following semester.
