1 Waseda University, Study Abroad Waseda CS-L (Customized Study Program Language Focused Programs / Junior Year Program)for 1 semester at University of Bonn Location: Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, Germany Title: CS-L Program for 1 semester Language Requirements: The University of Bonn accepts students who have reached at least the A1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Level A1 is the basic "breakthrough" level, which means that you are able to communicate in a simple manner if the person you are speaking to talks slowly and clearly, understand and use familiar, everyday and common expressions and simple sentences (e.g. information about yourself and your family or about shopping, work and your immediate surroundings), introduce yourself and others, as well as ask others about themselves, e.g. where they live, who they know and what they own. The Goethe Institut offers an online self-assessment test for free ( In order to show proof of your language skills, you need to either submit either a transcript with a record of German language courses equivalent to at least 80 units of 45 minutes each (= 60h in total) or submit the Goethe-Certificate A1: Start Deutsch A1. 2 Course Registration (for the first term): After having completed the Orientation Course, you will receive course recommendations and register for classes in late September/early October or late March/ early April respectively. Summary: For about 70 years the University of Bonn has been organizing study abroad programs with partner universities all around the world. The Waseda-CS-L Program at Bonn is built upon this long-standing experience and presents Waseda students with a tailor-made study abroad program. The program is designed to increase intercultural competence and improve German speaking skills through German language tuition with native speakers and integration into a German-speaking environment. It offers total language immersion, specially designed courses on German culture, history and civilization, regular University courses and an extensive cultural program. The University of Bonn is one of Germany s leading academic institutions. Founded in 1818 by Wilhelm von Humboldt, it is today a center of interdisciplinary and innovative research and teaching for over 37,000 students including more than 4,800 students from abroad and is continually ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide Bonn - a city of approximately 325,000 and over 2,000 years old - is the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven and proud of its rich cultural life. It has its own opera house, several theaters, concert halls and a range of museums. As the former German capital, Bonn still houses various governmental institutions, a number of international organizations, including 19 UN agencies, and the headquarters of major enterprises such as the Deutsche Telekom and Deutsche Post.

3 Located in the center of Europe, Bonn is also a convenient gateway to explore the EU. Keyword(s): intensive German language, cultural immersion Academic Study Orientation Course (September/March) The study abroad program in Bonn begins with a four week intensive orientation course in September for students arriving in the winter semester or in March for students arriving in the summer semester. The aim of this orientation is to prepare you for your studies at the university and to give you an introduction to German life and culture. The course offers German language classes plus workshops on different topics, such as language and literature and a choir. In addition the orientation offers an extensive cultural program, with excursions to Trier - the oldest city in Germany- and to Marksburg castle, a medieval castle on the Rhine River. You will also be assigned a German buddy who will introduce you to the university and city from the perspective of a local student. Our office will assist you with administrative procedures such as enrollment, insurance and residence permit matters when you are in Bonn. Overall Structure of the Program: During the semester, the flexible program structure and the different course offerings of the Bonn program give Waseda students the opportunity to find a tailor-made study abroad program. You can select from intensive and advanced language classes as well as interdisciplinary/ classes (such as German Culture and Civilisation ) offered by the International Office and regular university courses: Program Semester (sample list only): Depending on the recommendations you receive based on your German language proficiency and your performance during the Orientation Course, you can choose from: Intensive German language classes (12 contact hours/ 18 ECTS cr.) Specialized language courses concentrating on specific language learning aspects, e.g. Phonetics (basic or intermediate level), Text Production (advanced level), Vocabulary and Conversation (advanced level) (each course: 3 contact hours/ 6 ECTS cr) Thematic courses: Introduction to German Culture and Civilization (basic or advanced level), German Media (intermediate level), German Literature (advanced level), German History (advanced level) (each course: 3 contact hours/ 6 ECTS cr.) Preparation course for the DSH exam (German language examination for university entrance, a very advanced level course for qualified students) (4 contact hours/8 ECTS cr.)

4 o Optional: regular university courses from every academic field. You can choose from the whole range of courses regularly offered at the University of Bonn, provided you have the necessary qualifications. Housing You will be accommodated at coed university residence halls. All program participants will have a single room or, in some cases, an apartment. Those staying in an apartment will have a bathroom and a kitchenette at their disposal while those staying in a single room will share the bathroom and kitchen facilities with a small number of other students. There is only a limited number of single apartments available. Opportunities for Learning through Experience 1. German-Japanese Language Exchange Language learning is an important aspect of the program. In order to enhance the formalised learning effects of classroom course work, practising the newly acquired skills is all-important. You can practice your German with your assigned Bonn Buddy or in contact with German students learning Japanese ( Sprachtandems ). Beyond the aspect of language training, a cultural exchange between Japanese and German students will be a beneficial side effect. 2. Social and cultural program for international students In addition to academic education, first-hand experience of German culture and society constitutes a vital part of the program. Therefore, the social and cultural program is designed to make your stay in Germany as informative and rich in experience as possible. The activities comprise various trips and excursions (incl. a one-week excursion to Berlin) and social events. They also provide a very good opportunity to interact with your fellow students from all over the world. Each student will also be assigned a German student as a buddy to help you get along in Bonn and at the University during your semester, especially during the initial weeks in Bonn. 3. Extracurricular activities There are numerous student activities at the University of Bonn, ranging from the academic orchestra to theater groups, dancing and art classes to debating societies. The University offers numerous different kinds of sport and several hundred courses per week such as basketball, archery, canoe,, Pilates and

5 even aikido ( see The International Office staff will provide you with all necessary information about the different options and encourage the program participants to join any of these activities. Last but not least, peer advisors in the student dorms organize a variety of events (sports, culture, cooking, etc.). These events are usually announced through posters and flyers in the dorms. Facilitation Plan Waseda students may meet with the local program coordinator to discuss their progress as well as any questions or problems they might have. In addition, the International Office offers a weekly coffee-hour in order to meet with the participants and provide an informal surrounding for questions and talks.
