Career & Technology Education CTE-Related Jobs Are in High Demand According to the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, 30% of the 46.8 million job openings created by 2018 will require some college or a two-year associate degree. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that middle-skill jobs (jobs that generally require some significant education and training beyond high school but less than a bachelor s degree) will account for about 45% of all job openings projected through Of the occupations requiring postsecondary education, those requiring an associate degree are projected to grow the fastest, at about 19 percent. (BLS, Occupational Outlook Handbook, Edition) Nearly one in six hot jobs, jobs paying above the median wage and having above average growth, will require an associate degree or some postsecondary training. (American Association of Community Colleges) By 2018, the U.S. will need at least 4.7 million new workers with postsecondary certificates, according to the Georgetown University Center on Education

Program/Design 21 st Century CTE Learning Spaces Schools as Symbols of Change

3. Learning Spaces Informal (independent + group)

Collaborative Visioning Process DATA The Executive Steering Committee with the Architect develop Vision, Guiding Principles and Program facts VISION + GUIDING PRINCIPLES PROGRAM DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS values develop then confirm drive the design new cte high school The role of the Architect is to help align the facts of the program with the values of the program

Collect Data Identify a core team of stakeholders to study and collect data specific to your school division s career and technical education (CTE) programs. Examine course and program enrollments over time to identify patterns or trends. Examine local, regional, national,& international occupational and employment data: How do your existing CTE programs match up with identified occupations/career cluster areas of growth? What new programming should be added to address identified gap areas? What existing programming should be deleted or enhanced? Survey students to determine their interest in existing CTE courses or any proposed new courses.

Conduct Stakeholder Meetings Executive Steering Committee: Day-to-day decision making Key stakeholder representatives Expanded Stakeholder Group: Faculty and Staff Planning & Parks and Rec. Students & Parents Community Stakeholders + Partner Institutions Conduct Public Input Sessions

Develop Specifications CTE spaces, with space for equipment, require more square footage than traditional classrooms What does a student do in a particular course or program? What does that student s work space look like? What are the specialized tools and equipment necessary to teach this course? What are the safety considerations for this lab or classroom? What is the student capacity of the course or program? What are the storage requirements?

Promoting the Vision Present the need for the facility based on the overall program/facility audit data. Make the case by supplying the supporting information and documentation. Provide the numbers. How much space? For how many students? At what cost? Paint the picture of what you are attempting to create in order for interested parties to buy in. What will be the impact of the school and programs within the community and beyond?

Project Funding Identifying the means of funding (i.e. CIP, RFP/PPEA, or Bond) Identifying the timelines for funding and eventual construction Targeted date for opening and occupation President s FY 2013 Budget Proposal = $1 Billion over 3 years for Career Academies

The Loudoun County CTE Model The story of the Monroe Technology Center and the Loudoun Governor s Career and Technical STEM Academy

Focus on School Business Partnerships Cultivate business partnerships and internship opportunities for students. Share your CTE facility by providing community-based education opportunities after regular school hours. Promote opportunities to partner with higher education so that students may earn additional college-level credit.
