3 Understanding Student Equity Policy and Philosophy at CCC s

4 New Methods of Accountability at CCC s Student Success and Support Programs, or SSSP, implemented through CCC Chancellor's office to keep colleges and students more accountable SSSP emphasizes assessment, orientation, counseling and advising, as well as major/career decisions SSSP implemented College Scorecard, examining different success indicators, such as course success rate, fall-to-spring persistence, course retention, etc. Student Equity policy was born from examining the success data How can CCC s keep colleges and students more accountable? Data from SSSP clearly highlights differences in achievement between populations Student Equity mandate is implemented to identify subgroups with achievement gaps at the college and to address their needs Five Student Equity Success Indicators: Access to the College Course Completion ESL and Basic Skills Completion Degree and Certificate Completion Transfer Colleges review data and look specifically at what student populations are underachieving in the areas

9 Summer Bridge Program

10 Summer Bridge Program at GCC Specifically targeting success indicator- course completion Introduces new students to the campus Encourages students to begin their math or English sequences in a supportive environment Group tutoring for math is provided Students also complete a student development course taught by a counselor (college orientation) Once a week students also meet with peer mentors from SPARK program Peer mentors are second or third year students at GCC Once a week Friday activities Welcome BBQ University Tours

12 Student Equity Programs, Counseling Focus

13 Black Scholars, Guardian Scholars, La Comunidad ELIGIBILITY All of these programs are counseling based and use intrusive counseling to ensure their success at GCC All programs utilize the Student Equity Contract for student accountability: Be enrolled in at least 6 academic units Maintain the minimum required GPA* Have a goal of earning a certificate, AA/AS/AD-T and/or transfer Meet with Counselor 3X a semester Take English & Math Assessment Complete Student Educational Plan (w. counselor) Participate in Student Development class (SPRING) Complete tutoring hours (w. Counselor) Participate in GCC activity

14 Black Scholars, Guardian Scholars, La Comunidad SERVICES Academic counselors (3 times per semester) Registration assistance Referral to campus resources College Success Workshops Cultural Activities Tutoring and study groups Peer-mentoring Assistance with supplies, transportation, meals And much more!

16 Black Scholars Mission: To assist African American college students in realizing and achieving their academic and career goals by increasing retention, persistence, and graduation rates of its members. Designed to apply positive antideficit models and research based interventions to build a viable foundation for academic and career success. The program strives to enable strong men and women who will contribute to our communities and to our society at large. The Black Scholars program provides students a variety of support services: academic counseling, tutoring, mentoring, cultural and university field trips, preregistration workshops, book loans, scholarships, and learning communities.

18 Guardian Scholars Becoming Empowered Students Together

19 Guardian Scholars Mission: Guardian Scholars is a supportive network that is committed to empower current and former Foster Youth achieve their academic, career, and personal goals. The program encourages student growth and development through meaningful interactions between individual, group, and in class sessions. Guardian Scholars is a program committed to help current and for current and former foster youth obtain access, retention, and success in their college pathway. The program works collaboratively with several on campus departments, outside organizations, and our student participants to build a supportive network that will assist our members with their individual needs.

21 La Comunidad The logo for La Comunidad is the tree of knowledge. It symbolizes the opportunity that GCC Latino students have to grow personally and academically, while empowering one another to achieve their goals Please feel free to look at La Comunidad brochures and take information forms for your students!

22 La Comunidad Designed to assist GCC Latino/a college students gain the knowledge and develop skills necessary to navigate a college environment with the goal of achieving a higher education. La Comunidad counselors work with departments across campus in an effort to increase students academic, career, and personal success. Students participating in the program enroll in learning-communities that are taught in a cooperative environment with instructors, peer mentors, tutors and counselors
