Introduction The College is a community that has come together for the principal purpose of learning. Like all communities, we need ground rules to help us to live and work together safely and successfully. Observing these guidelines should ensure that we all attain our goal, which is that you achieve your potential and progress in your chosen career. 2. College Values The College has a set of values that supports everything we do in our college community. These are: Excellence Passion Teamwork Integrity Supportiveness Valuing Others Innovation Sustainability 3. The Student Code of Conduct This outlines how all students are expected to behave as members of the College community. It applies to behaviour on campus, during off-site activities and when travelling to and from College. The key elements are Safeguarding, Respect & Responsibility, each of which is closely linked to our College values and is covered in the Student Charter and the Higher Education Student Charter. The Higher Education Code of Conduct addresses Chapters A6 and B6 of the UK Quality Code for Higher Education. The central purpose of the Student Code of Conduct is to encourage the treatment of others in the way we ourselves expect and want to be treated. Treating all others with respect will help to create the type of community we all want to be part of. The College expects everyone to: Show respect to all other members of the College community Promote their own safety and that of others Behave in a responsible and mature manner in line with our college policies Student Support/Student Code of Conduct/July 2014 Page 4

Living/working in the College Community Conduct and Performance Policies The College operates conduct and performance policies (with relevant procedures) to support and encourage appropriate behaviour. Full details can be found in the Student Handbook available on Moodle. Respecting Others We want all students and staff to work and live in an environment where there is a high level of respect shown to each other. Aggressive and inappropriate behaviour, bullying and violence, go against everything the College stands for. Any threats of, or actual behaviour of this nature, will be dealt with via the conduct and performance procedures. Equal Opportunities The College is committed to promoting equality and diversity. The College will not tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment directly or indirectly related to an individual's age, gender, disability, socio-economic background, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation, or marriage or civil partnership status. Personal Property You should take care of your personal property. The College cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to clothing or other personal property sustained on College premises. Similarly, the College cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to a vehicle or its contents while parked within the College grounds. Student ID Cards At the start of the year, you will be issued with a College identification card, which you must bring with you every time you attend. If you lose this card, a replacement will be required and will cost 5. The card serves several important purposes, one of which relates to your safety. The card enables staff to check who is entitled to be on site and to challenge, or remove those without good reason to be here. Damage to College Property You will be held responsible for any wilful damage to College property that you have caused. You will then be required to pay for any repairs or replacements you have made necessary. Use of Mobile Phones and Personal Music Players We ask that all mobile phones and personal music players are switched off in classrooms and all working areas, unless required for the class and authorised by staff. You should ensure that their use in other public areas does not disturb others. Copying, Plagiarism and Collusion Copying what someone else has written or taking someone's idea, including material downloaded from the Internet, and trying to pass it off as your own idea (plagiarism) is unacceptable and will result in the piece of work being rejected for assessment and subject to procedures outlined with the Student Conduct and Performance Student Support/Student Code of Conduct/July 2014 Page 2

6 Policy/ HE Academic Performance and Conduct Policy. While you may often work as part of a group towards a course assignment, the work of each individual person in that group must be clearly identified as their own. Higher Education students should also refer to the University of Portsmouth s Examination and Assessment Regulations for Sparsholt College which further defines assessment offences. Assessment and Exam Regulations Whilst your teachers will help prepare you for all assessment activities, it is your responsibility to know and follow the regulations of the Awarding Bodies and to make yourself aware of the times and location of any examinations. It is important to behave correctly in exam rooms. If rules are broken, the College has to report such incidents and, in extreme cases, disqualification may be the result. Social Media Sites As a student you are a member of a wider college community and as such should follow agreed College IT protocols. As a result, please do not: post any material that could be viewed as libellous, bullying or harassing to another member of the college community, student or member of staff. post any material that contravenes the College s Equality and Diversity policies. post any material that explicitly encourages other members of the College community to break the law. It will be viewed as particularly serious if a student actively encourages others to take prohibited substances or engage in anti-social behaviour. incite others to post any material as described above. You are reminded that material posted on the internet can be very hard to remove. You should only post photographs that you would be happy for others to see, now or in the future. You should only make written comments that could not be used against you in future. Travel to /from college We welcome responsible and safe drivers. Drivers are respectfully advised that they must follow some basic and undemanding rules (as would be the case in any public environment): Parking is only permitted in the designated Student Car Parks. You must register your car or motorcycle and College parking permits must be displayed at all times. Speeding and dangerous driving is not permitted. Vehicles must be taxed, insured and hold a current MOT. Cars cannot be used to store prohibited items. Student Support/Student Code of Conduct/July 2014 Page 3

7 If you do not follow the above guidelines, the College reserves the right to exclude your vehicle from the car park. If you use college transport to get to college, it is expected that you will show respect to your fellow passengers at all times. If you do not, your travel permit can be withdrawn. Alcohol For the wellbeing of all Students and Staff, the College takes very seriously all matters involving alcohol. If you are under 18 years of age you must not be in possession of or under the influence of alcohol at any time on College property or whilst engaged in college related activities on or off site. If you are over 18, you cannot bring alcohol onto College property unless you are a residential Student and you are taking it back to your hostel. In the residential handbook it clearly states where alcohol is prohibited and anyone with alcohol in prohibited areas will be dealt with under the college conduct and performance procedure. We expect you to use alcohol responsibly at all times if you consume it whilst you are on College property, and in particular not to be under the influence of alcohol during lessons or practical sessions. Illegal Drugs The College has a zero tolerance policy on the use of illegal drugs. The use, possession, exchange, supply, selling or being under the influence of illegal drugs, solvent abuse, misuse of prescription drugs or legal highs is not permitted on College property and will be dealt with using the College s HE and FE Learner Conduct and Performance Policies.
