1 Call for applications 1 (5) CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR A DOCTORAL CANDIDATE POSITION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TURKU GRADUATE SCHOOL DOCTORAL PROGRAMME IN MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCES (MATTI) 1. Short description of the doctoral programme In Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Computer Sciences the following academic disciplines are represented: Mathematics, Statistics and ICT from three different viewpoints: natural sciences, technical sciences as well as economics. The Doctoral Programme works within national and international, science-based networks which is why the research in MATTI-programme is very international by nature. Application period and what can be applied for During the time period 1 September 20 September 2017, the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Computer Sciences MATTI invites applications for: 2.1. The right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Turku at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences The study right for a doctoral degree begins on 1 January Fixed term doctoral candidate positions The doctoral candidate position begins on 1 January 2018 at the earliest and it is for a maximum of four years. Doctoral candidate positions are primarily intended for full-time doctoral dissertation research with the aim of completing the doctoral degree in four years. Other duties than those related to doctoral dissertation research must not compromise the full-time doctoral dissertation research, and can be at most 5% (80 h) of the annual working time of the doctoral candidate. The 5% rule does not apply to such teaching given by the doctoral candidate, which can be embedded in the doctoral degree as ECTS. The salary is based on job demands levels 2 4 in the salary system of Finnish universities for teaching and research personnel. It consists of a task-specific salary component which is / month, and a component based on personal performance, which is at most 46.3 % of the task-specific salary component. The task-specific salary component is typically on the level 2 at the beginning of the doctoral training. The position has probation period of four months Both of the above (a and b) 3. Who may apply 3.1. The right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Turku can be applied for by: Persons who meet the eligibility criteria for pursuing a doctoral degree, as stipulated in the Universities Act (558/2009, Section 37). The degree that gives eligibility for the study right for doctoral degree must be completed by the application deadline, 20 September Students graduating after the application deadline may apply, on the condition that the certified copy of the original degree certificate (in the original language) and the final transcript, and their English, Finnish or Swedish translations (or an English-language Diploma Supplement) are submitted and arrive at the by 30 November, 2017 at 15:00 (UTC+2). If you are applying for a right to pursue a doctoral degree in Information Systems Science at Turku School of Economics, the degree that gives eligibility for the study right must be completed by the end of the application period, 20 September, A doctoral candidate position can be applied for by: Persons who have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Turku in one of the disciplines represented by the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Computer Sciences and who have

2 Call for applications 2 (5) not previously had a Ministry of Education and Culture-funded doctoral candidate position and/or UTUGS-funded doctoral candidate position for a total of four years. Persons who have not yet been granted the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Turku, but who match the profile of the MATTI Doctoral Programme and meet the eligibility criteria for the right to pursue a doctoral degree (see 3.1). As the right to pursue a doctoral degree is a precondition for receiving a doctoral candidate position, the applicant must apply for both the right to study for a doctoral degree as well as a Doctoral Candidate position. A person who already has a doctoral degree from a Finnish university is not eligible for a UTUGSfunded doctoral training position. According to Section 39 of the University of Turku Rules of Procedure a person selected for the post of a Doctoral Candidate is required to have a higher university degree and must have an accepted research plan. In addition, when acquiring his or her degree or otherwise, he or she is required to have demonstrated the ability and motivation to undertake postgraduate studies and the capacity to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with the research plan. 4. Application procedure 4.1. Application documents The application period begins on 1 September, 2017 at 00:00 and ends on 20 September, 2017 at 23:59 (UTC+2). Doctoral Candidate positions and the right to study for a doctoral degree at the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Computer Sciences are applied by filling in an electronic form and attaching the required additional documents into the electronic application form. The link to the application form and instructions for the application will be published on the website of the doctoral programme The application documents must be written in English. The application form opens on September 1, 2017 and closes on September 20, 2017 at p.m. Applications which arrive after the deadline will not be considered. The application documents will not be returned to the sender. It is important that the applicant fills in carefully all the required fields of the application form. The application procedure happens in two stages. On the first phase the applicant makes an application where she/he tells about herself/himself and the plans regarding the doctoral studies and dissertation (electronic form). The Doctoral Programme evaluates all the applicants, checks the eligibility of every applicant and how the applicant fits to the research profile of the programme. In addition, the Doctoral Programme also checks if there are suitable supervisors and research directors available for the applicant. If all these criteria are met and the applicant is evaluated competitive enough, a second phase application form is sent to the applicant. The applicants that proceed to the second round of the application procedure will be appointed supervisors and a research director with whom the applicant writes the application and agrees on supervision-, study- and a financing plan for the studies. The pdf documents attached to the application should contain the following parts: 1. Scanned copies of the original degree certificates of Bachelor s and Master s degrees. 2. Scanned copies of original transcripts of study records of the mentioned degrees with grades. A. If the applicant has completed the former degree(s), which make him/her eligible for doctoral studies, at a University in Finland, the degree certificates, the transcripts of study records and other educational documents which may influence in the student selection must be attached in the electronic application form.

If the applicant has completed the former degree(s), which make him/her eligible for doctoral studies, at a University abroad (i.e. outside Finland), the degree certificates, the transcripts of study records and other educational documents, which may influence in the student selection must be attached in the electronic application form. If the original degree certificates and other educational documents are not written in English, Finnish or Swedish, official translations to one of these languages or and English Diploma Supplement, if the degree was obtained from a European institute of higher education, are required. Translations of the educational documents must be issued by the awarding institution, officially certified copy of a translation issued by the awarding institution, translated by an official translator or an officially certified copy of a translation made by an official translator. NOTE: Those applicants who have been granted the right to study and who have completed their studies at a University abroad have to submit officially certified copies of the degree certificates, other educational documents and the official translations of the documents to the University of Turku according to the instructions given in the admission notification. The right to study for a doctoral degree is conditional until this is done. 3. Those applying to Information Systems Science must verify their language skills according to the selection criteria for postgraduate studies at TSE. Letter written by the supervisor(s) (if the applicant already has planned supervisor(s), including assessment of the applicant, announcing a commitment to complete the thesis project, length of the position at the University of Turku, plan for financing the thesis project (existing funding and funding to be applied for), publication plan, estimated date of the public defence of the doctoral thesis (first/second half of year 20xx). 8. Letter written by the applicant describing career plan and motivation to participate in the Doctoral Programme (one A4-page) 9. Other documents that may affect the decision-making, such as information about grants, prizes and recommendation letters that the applicant wishes to present, in order to indicate the eligibility and merits for the applied position. In addition, if the applicant already has the study right in the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Computer Sciences, the applicant must include in the electronic application form a research plan (maximum length 3 pages) The research plan must cover the following topics: Description of study Scientific motivation and goals Research methods and research environment The applicant s own role in the research The schedule of research

4 Call for applications 4 (5) The current state of dissertation and doctoral studies For Information Systems Science a research plan is required also for applicants to the right to pursue a doctoral degree: the maximum length is 10 pages, excluding cover and list of references. For applicants for Information Systems Science at TSE, the degree that gives eligibility for the study right for doctoral degree must be ready by September 20, See information on the required documents (applications for the study right in Information Systems Science): Assessment of applications The applications will be assessed by the Board of the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Computer Sciences, which may also consult external experts from outside the University of Turku. The applicants may be interviewed Evaluation and selection criteria Assessment and selection criteria consist of applicant s educational and academic merits as well as research potential assessed on the basis of the application documents. The research topic of the Doctoral Candidate must fit the profile of the programme. In addition, a good knowledge of the English language is required. NOTE: The selection criteria for postgraduate studies at Turku School of Economics are used in the selection for applications to the right to pursue a doctoral degree in Information Systems Science. See the selection criteria, including requirements for the research plan here: Decisions The applicants will be informed personally about the decision on granting the right to pursue a degree by the end of November The names of the persons who have been selected for the funded positions will be published on the website by the end of November, If the applicant does not wish his/her name to be published on the www-pages, the applicant must contact the programme coordinator before the end of November The steering committee of the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics and Computer Sciences makes a proposal on granting the right to study for a doctoral degree and funded doctoral candidate positions. The Vice-Dean of the research affairs of the decides on granting the right to study for a doctoral degree, based on the proposals of the steering committee of the Doctoral Programme. The right to study for a doctoral degree begins on January 1, The decision on employing an applicant on a doctoral candidate position is made by the head of that department which the employment contract belongs to Acceptance of the study place An admitted applicant has to notify University of Turku of his/her acceptance of the study place by the 15 December 2017 at (GMT +2) according to the instructions given in the admission notification. If the admitted applicant does not give the notification in the time indicated, he/she shall forfeit the study place. A person admitted to more than one university or polytechnic degree has to notify only

5 Call for applications 5 (5) the degree in which he/she accepts the study place. Notification is binding, it is not possible to cancel or change it later. According to Finnish legislation, student may accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree in Finland during one academic term (autumn term or spring term ). This rule applies to all higher education. Higher education degrees included in the rule are Bachelor degrees and Master degrees awarded by Finnish universities of applied sciences, Bachelor degrees and Master degrees awarded by Finnish universities and Licentiate and Doctoral degrees awarded by Finnish universities. Only exemptions are Transfer student selections, the Åland Polytechnic and the Police College of Finland. All students pursuing a doctoral degree must register for each study term as instructed by the University of Turku. Only students who have registered as being present can participate in the teaching and pursue studies at the university. 5. Appeal proceedings If an applicant is dissatisfied with the result of the student selection (right to study for a doctoral degree), he/she has the right to submit an application for the rectification of the decision to Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences within 14 days of the official publishing of the decisions. Registration All students pursuing a doctoral degree must enroll for each study term as instructed by the University of Turku.
