2 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Early Childhood Education Program Overview The Ph.D. in education with a major in early childhood education was designed to develop and support leadership, research and policy that will inform, support and promote education for young children. It was designed to reflect the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) guidelines for developing leadership in the field of early childhood education. This 80-credit doctoral program allows for part- or full-time study. Seminars and field projects provide students with a variety of leadership experiences in early childhood, curriculum and program development, assessment, applied research and evaluation, adult instruction and policy design. 3 Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education Key Components Foundation Core (12 credits) - Early Childhood Education students take Foundation Core courses, both as a cohort and together with PhD students from Counseling and Educational Leadership, cross- listed under early childhood education. Department Core (32 credits) - The Department Core courses for the Early Childhood Education major are taken in early childhood (EC) and special education (SE). Cognate Area (20 credits) - Each student selects courses in a Cognate Area (a related field such as literacy, special education, leadership or counseling). Dissertation (16 credits) Each student proposes, conducts and defends a research study that contributes to the field of early childhood education. Oden/Martino March, 2017
4 Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education Typical Course Sequence On the following page is a typical sequence of coursework and other requirements for completing the PhD in Early Childhood Education. It also shows the semesters during which specific courses are typically offered. There is flexibility in the sequence of courses taken, in how many courses are taken each term, and in the length of time taken to complete the degree. Students are required to successfully complete coursework and Comprehensive Qualifying Exams within 6 years. After completing exams, students are required to complete a Dissertation and Final Oral Defense in the next 1- to 4 years. 17 WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I APPLY? Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education Once your application file is complete in the Graduate Admissions office, it will be forwarded to the Department of Human Development and Child Studies (Early Childhood area) for review by the Program Coordinator, Dr. Sherri Oden. Determination of Finalists All applications received by the deadline of July 1 will be reviewed for the fall term. Admission to this program is selective. Finalists will be selected based upon a review of each applicant s file, with specific attention to: prior college and university grades and grade point average CV (or resume) and Personal Statement two writing samples three professional recommendations professional and educational background The Early Childhood Education faculty will conduct individual interviews with the most promising candidates. These finalists will also be asked to complete a written assignment. Individual Interviews of Finalists If the review of your application file indicates that you have met the major program requirements and that you qualify as a finalist, you will be contacted to arrange for the interview with several members of the faculty. You will also be asked to write a response to an essay question. During the interview, we will ask about: your goals and purposes in seeking the Ph.D., your professional background & experiences with young children, and your knowledge about theory, research, and practices for the field of early childhood education. The interview will take between 30 and 45 minutes. You will then be asked to write a response to one of several essay questions about current issues in early childhood education. 18 Decision and Notification Final decisions on admissions will be based upon a final review of all available documentation, the interview and the written essay. The names of applicants to be recommended by the faculty for admission to the Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education will be submitted to Graduate Admissions for their final review.
