2 FURTHER INFORMATION The College s motto is Wisdom Leads to Respect and Friendship. We encourage friendship between many varied nationalities and respect for different customs, cultures and religions. THE COST OF LIVING IN GEELONG 1. The cost of living in the city of Geelong and surrounding areas is very similar to that of Melbourne in relation to the cost of food, entertainment and transport. 2. When in Homestay Accommodation, a Kardinia student will generally have all meals provided including a made lunch to take to school. 3. Homestay students may be driven to school, or some may walk to school and some may take a Kardinia bus. The bus fee is included in the tuition fee. Hence there should be no day to day costs for transport to and from school. 4. Homestay students will have their laundry done within the Homestay Accommodation. This service is included in the Homestay fee. 5. Other living expenses an overseas student may have are as follows: occasional snacks (ice creams, soft drinks etc) occasional outings with friends. For example, the movies, a meal occasional visits to Melbourne with friends (only with the school s permission as per the Homestay Policy Document) purchases of personal items such as tooth paste, make up, hair appointments, stationary etc 6. Generally, medical and dental appointments will be paid for by the student. If the college makes the payment, reimbursement is appreciated as soon as possible from the overseas student s family. CRITERIA FOR ACCEPTANCE AND LEVELS OF ENTRY Students will be accepted into a particular year level on satisfying the following requirements: 1. Being within the required age range for the year level 2. An acceptable level of academic achievement on previous school reports 3. An acceptable level of English Language proficiency LEVELS OF ENTRY FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS The School is endorsed to enrol overseas students at all levels, Preparatory to Year 12. In practice, only exceptional students with high scholastic levels and excellent English skills are admitted directly into Year 12. Most senior students commence at Years 8, 9 or 10. Applicants for Year 11 must be of a satisfactory standard with suitable English skills. Those with borderline passes may not be successful in gaining a place or may be offered a place for Year 10 instead. It should be noted that Forms 1-6 overseas may not be exactly comparable with Years 7-12 in Victoria. This situation can be complicated further by the level of development of a student's English language skills and whether or not English is currently the language of instruction. It may not always be appropriate to simply apply for the next level. For example, a student in Form 4 overseas applying for Year 11 in Victoria the following year. If the student's English skills are not particularly strong, it may be better for such a student to come to our college at Year 10, accepting some study overlap but gaining an extra year in which to consolidate and develop skill levels in English. Parents and students are urged to consider these factors very carefully when deciding the level of study being applied for at Kardinia International College. The maximum ages at commencement in the Secondary School are as follows: Year 7 14 years Year years Year 8 15 years Year years Year 9 16 years

3 In making a decision as to the appropriate level of placement, the College will be guided by the results of entrance and other tests, school reports, ELICOS reports and the student's age and maturity. The College reserves the right to review a student's level of study in the light of assessment prior to commencement and/or performance after commencement. THE SECONDARY CURRICULUM YEARS 7-10 The entire curriculum for the secondary year levels is a vertical curriculum consisting of a large set of semester units from which students choose an individualised course of study. Every unit in the curriculum has equal status, value and time allocation. Details are contained in the prospectus. YEARS 11 AND 12 THE VICTORIAN CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION The VCE is a two year course for Year 11 and 12 students. Students are offered the following VCE subjects: English, English Literature, French, Japanese, Mathematics (Specialist, Methods, Further), Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, History, International Studies, Legal Studies, Philosophy, Economics, Accounting, Studio Art, Visual Communication, Media, Physical Education, Health and Human Development, Global Politics, Dance, Music Performance, Theatre Studies, Information Technology, Design Technology in Materials, Product Design and Technology in Systems (Engineering), Computing. THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA Kardinia International College offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma as an alternative program to the VCE for Senior Students. This is an internationally recognised qualification and is recognised by universities across the world. It is a renowned worldwide program of the highest quality. Students in this program are offered the following subjects: English, French, Japanese, French ab initio, Spanish ab initio, History, Business and Management, Psychology, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematical Studies and Mathematics, Sports Exercise and Health Science, Visual Arts, Theatre Studies and Music. Many subjects can be studied at standard level or higher level. The subjects are dependent on sufficient numbers as determined by the Principal. ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE English As An Additional Language (EAL) is a subject catering for overseas students who wish to study for one year or long term. Students are assessed as to their needs and programs are designed to suit individuals in speaking, writing, reading and listening to English. Students are prepared for entry into mainstream classes. International students are encouraged to speak English whenever possible. It is appreciated that for students with limited English skills, this can be an exhausting process. We recognise that it is also important for students to have time speaking their own language with newly gained friends from their own country. Most of the time, however, students are obliged to speak English. THE ACADEMIC PROGRESS OF OVERSEAS STUDENTS As indicated clearly in its philosophy statement, Kardinia International College is strongly committed to creating an environment where overseas students are warmly welcomed and well-looked after. To this end the College appoints an Overseas Student Academic Mentor whose role it is: to conduct regular group meetings with overseas students. to ensure that overseas students have ready access to assistance with study skills, to career and tertiary study counselling and to the College Welfare Officer. to work in close association with the Homestay Co-ordinator. to continually check the progress and welfare of each overseas student. to refer an overseas student to the Grievance Policy, if necessary.

4 TEACHING METHODS All teachers at Kardinia are fully qualified and use modern cutting edge teaching methods embracing technology, active student involvement and promoting independent research wherever possible. ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING OF STUDENT PROGRESS At the beginning of each semester, teachers will provide students with a written statement of the expectations of the unit, including the assessment required for satisfactory completion. Assessment methods will include a vast array of measures including examinations, oral presentations, assignments, research projects, essays, experimental reports etc. Normal exceptions are that students will satisfactorily complete all units. In order to proceed to VCE, it is expected that students will have satisfactorily completed at least forty-eight units. Parent Interviews are conducted mid semester (Terms 1 and 3) and formal reports are presented at the end of each semester. GRIEVANCE POLICY Overseas students are expected to follow all the published regulations and procedures including the homestay policy. INTERNAL COMPLAINTS APPEALS PROCESS Tutor Teachers and the International Student Co-ordinator are available to help students become familiar with, and understand the College's expectations, regarding attendance and conduct, and to listen to their concerns and to resolve difficulties, where possible. In cases where rules have been breached, staff will apply penalties fairly and without favour. Where students believe they have not been treated fairly, they may formally appeal to the Principal, for a determination of the dispute. The process will commence within 10 working days of the formal lodgment of the complaint. The complainant, with the support of a nominee if so chosen or appellant has the opportunity to present his/her case. A written record will be kept of the complaint. The complainant or appellant is given a written detailed statement of the outcome. If the result is unsatisfactory to the complainant an independent mediation may be sought. EXTERNAL COMPLAINTS APPEALS PROCESS Where the student is not satisfied with the outcome in the internal process as above the following procedure will occur: - the student requests an independent hearing in writing - the Principal will obtain the services of an independent solicitor in Geelong to hear the dispute and make a ruling. This dispute resolution process does not circumscribe other legal remedies. Throughout either process, the student s enrolment will be maintained. If the process results in a decision that supports the student the college will immediately implement any such decision and will advise the student accordingly. Please Note: This agreement, and this availability of complaints and appeals does not remove the right of the student to take action under Australia s consumer protection laws.

5 ENROLMENT PROCEDURE 1. Complete the Overseas Student Application for Enrolment Form and a copy of your child s birth certificate, passport and recent school reports. The College will send you a conditional Letter of Offer setting out the amount of fees and Health Cover payable in advance. 3. When the fees are transferred to the Kardinia International College Trust Account, please notify Ms Milford by sending her a receipt of the payment. A Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) and Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) and receipt will then be sent to you. 4. A student visa can then be applied for by taking these documents, health check documents and passport to the Visa Office. 5. Our Homestay Co-ordinator will contact you regarding preferences for homestay families. 6. When the student arrives at Melbourne airport we transfer him/her to our College/homestay family free of charge if it is within business hours. 7. The next day an orientation of the College and Geelong will be conducted by our Homestay Co-ordinator. An English test will be conducted to help organise EAL classes as well as other subjects. Students will also be assisted with setting up bank accounts and also purchasing the College uniform. REFUND POLICY Part or whole of the tuition fees is refundable under the following circumstances: if a student visa is rejected. Proof of visa rejection is needed for full refund. if a student is withdrawn by the parent, for any reason prior to the proposed commencement at the College, a deduction equal to 20 per cent of the whole of the relevant annual fee payable (whether the whole or only part of the relevant annual fee has been paid) will be made to cover administration costs and charges. if a student is withdrawn by the parent, for any reason after the student s commencement at the College, the parent must give at least one term s notice in writing and request a refund. A refund shall only be given for fees relating to any term s tuition that has not commenced after the expiration of one term s written notice. In addition, a deduction equal to 20 per cent of the whole of the relevant annual fee payable (whether the whole or only part of the relevant annual fee has been paid) will be made to cover administrative costs and charges. Tuition fees are not refundable: if a student fails to comply with the performance conditions of the College and is asked to leave the College. if a student fails to meet the visa requirements imposed by the Australian Government. TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ENROLMENT All students must abide by the rules and regulations of Kardinia International College and parents agree to ensure and accept responsibility for the child s compliance with the rules, which the college may establish from time to time for the good conduct of the College and its students. Parents acknowledge and agree that the College may be required to act from time to time in a manner deemed by the College to be appropriate and without consultation with the parents, particularly in circumstances where the College rules have been breached. All fees and charges (detailed on account of fees) must be paid in full before a Confirmation of Enrolment can be issued. Parents agree to the conditions of student s attendance at the College and undertake to make payment of tuition and homestay accommodation fees and other costs when required to do so. If fees and expenses are not paid in accordance with the College s requirements, the College may refuse to allow the child to attend, or may remove him/her, from the College. Unpaid fees and expenses shall accrue interest from the date of default in payment at the rate determined by the College and the College may impose an administration charge. Parents will ensure that their child will return to school on the dates fixed for resuming and will not leave the College at the end of the term until the recognised closing dates. Parents give permission for their child to receive medical assistance if the College authorities consider it advisable, and thus agree to pay the expenses incurred. Parents agree that the College shall not be held responsible or liable for any loss of personal property by their child for any reason whatsoever.

6 APPLICATION FEE: KARDINIA INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE 2017 FEES FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS (ALL COSTS ARE QUOTED IN AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED) Free of Charge. TUITION FEES (including school bus fee) $20,000 per year, payable in advance (Senior). $17,600 per year, payable in advance (Junior). **Sibling discount is available, please contact the Principal. * Fees are subject to change in so far as they are set by the Board each year. MEDICAL INSURANCE (compulsory Australian Government requirement) In accordance with Australian Government Regulations, students must pay for medical insurance for the duration of their visa. Kardinia International College organises medical insurance for overseas students with BUPA. Costs are approximately $530 per year. HOMESTAY PROGRAM $350 per week, payable in advance for each term. This fee covers accommodation, meals and laundry. A hot lunch is provided at school once a week. Other lunches and meals are provided by homestay families. GUARDIAN ARRANGMENT FEE Free of charge. HOMESTAY PLACEMENT FEE Free of charge. FOUNDATION LEVY $400 - this cost includes ICT Levy, Building Levy, school year book and Founder s Day celebrations. AIRPORT PICKUP First time arrival free of charge if during working hours, otherwise a cost of $120 is incurred. OTHER COSTS: UNIFORM (First year only) GIRLS BOYS School uniform: $700 (approx.) $530 (approx.) Sports uniform: $230 (approx.) $230 (approx.) Note: Some of the boy s uniform can be brought from overseas. For example, business shirts and trousers. Year 11 and 12 students will not require the full Sports Uniform. For VCE students there are two further costs: 1) VCE text books. 2) VCE BOARD OF STUDIES fee for overseas students approximately $250 for Year 11 and $300 for Year 12 + US$53 GAT (General Achievement Test). This is a government test. For IB students there are two further costs: 1) IB text books. 2) IB Exam fee US$820 + US$53 GAT (General Achievement Test). This is a government test. TABLET COMPUTERS It is compulsory for all students, both local and overseas to rent a tablet computer from the College. The College will purchase it and each student will use it for school work and at home. Students will be allowed to take it back to their home country during holidays. Approximate Costs: $380 per semester or $760 a year. A bond of $300 is charged but it is refundable when the computer is returned in good working order. The cost includes specialised software and most importantly, an extended warranty and repair program with onsite servicing.
