University of Nottingham: Ambition Nottingham programme; High Achievers' summer school; GP work experience; workshops in Computer Science, Social Science, Law, Chemistry and Geography Ambition Nottingham - The University of Nottingham s Ambition Nottingham programme is now open for year 12 applications. After registering, students will be able to sign up to attend the free masterclasses and taster sessions that begin in January Students then continue on the programme into year 13 where they can attend university preparation sessions such as interview skills and personal statement writing workshops. We particularly encourage students interested in arts, humanities and social science subjects to join the scheme. We offer an exciting range of masterclasses and taster days in these fields, and students will benefit from the opportunity to gain valuable course and careers insights ahead of the UCAS process. Students interested in the programme sign up at They must have achieved 7 A* - C (5 9) grades at GCSE (or equivalent), and if they meet certain socio-economic criteria they will receive priority booking on popular sessions High Achievers Summer School Applications for the 2018 High Achievers Summer School are now open. The High Achievers Summer School is a free residential summer school for high achieving Year 12 students who are interested in studying History of Art, Modern Languages or Music at the University of Nottingham. To find out more visit or highachievers@nottingham.ac.uk. Medicine - GP Work Experience Scheme Applications are now open for the GP work experience placement scheme for year 12 students. This 5 day structured placement offers students valuable observational experience and understanding of the work GPs and other healthcare professionals in general practice. Pre and post placement workshops at the University will support students preparation and learning whilst on placement. The scheme is designed to support year 12 students from less advantaged background attending state/maintained schools or colleges in Derbyshire, Lincolnshire or Nottinghamshire. Students must meet eligibility criteria as outlined in the application form, and be interested in and academically able to study medicine. 2 CoderDojo Girls only: Saturday 11th November CoderDojo is partnering with the University of Nottingham and Thomson Reuters to host a Girls-Only Dojo on Saturday 11th November at the University's Jubilee Campus. At this session, there will be a range of exciting skills tracks to experience (from beginner to intermediate level) including Creating games with Scratch programming, Building your own website with HTML and Hacking LEDs with the BBC micro:bit. At the end of the session there will be a Show & Tell session for the participants to showcase their projects created on the day. Why Girls-Only? This event is in support of the CoderDojo Girls Initiative. We want to help make the tech sector more inclusive and as diverse as the world we live in. We believe all girls deserve to have the space and support to enable them the same opportunities as boys in our increasingly technological world. We don t know what the world is going look like in 10 years time, but we know it will be powered by code! You or the algorithm? A youth led discussion about algorithm fairness This workshop has been designed for 13 to 17 year olds interested in understanding how the internet works. This event aims to closely work with young people to further understand how aware digital natives are about algorithm fairness, their attitudes and main concerns, and recommendations when acting with such systems. During the event, participants will be invited to become part of jury that will reflect and offer advice on: What are fair algorithms? How can we filter information contained on the www? Are recommender systems transparent? How do algorithms affect us? Events take place on 11th November 2017 and all participants receive a 10 gift voucher for taking part. 3 Law OutLAW project, School of Law, University of Nottingham The OutLaw project aims to widen the participation of students from underrepresented backgrounds in higher education and the legal profession generally. To achieve this, the project delivers presentations, workshops and practical sessions on getting into university, the legal profession and debating, and is designed to assist students with their applications. This year OutLAW are introducing an inter-school mock trial competition to give KS4 and Sixth Form students a taste of where studying law can lead and to help give their applications for higher education or similar an edge. The competition will be hosted over three sessions, with support from OutLAW volunteers and academics in the School of Law. Each school will need to have at least 4 students for each team to participate. The students will engage in sessions about nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy. Using these analytical techniques, they will deduce the structure of the unknown compound.
