2 Science Academies Workshop on Modern Chemistry & its Applications (WSP-2016) March 3-5, 2016 held at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar Indian Academy of sciences, Bangalore, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi and The National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad jointly organized a three days workshop on Modern Chemistry and Its Applications (WSP-2016) at the Department of Chemistry, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar during 3-5, March The workshop provided a platform for budding researchers and post graduate students to interact with eminent scientists of repute and offered exposure in many areas of modern chemistry and its applications. The Vice-Chancellor of University, Prof. A. S. Brar inaugurated the workshop along with Prof. P.K. Das, the Convener of workshop besides Dr. Vandana Bhalla, the coordinator of the workshop and Prof. Manoj Kumar, Head, Department of Chemistry. Prof. A. S. Brar, delivered his inaugural address, in which he addressed the participants the importance of research in chemical sciences and inspired students to get involved in research activities. Prof. P. K. Das, the Convener, stressed the importance of need based research directed towards solving issues concerning the society. Prof. Manoj Kumar, the Head of Chemistry Department elaborated the various steps the university is taking to ensure research culture in the campus. Finally, coordinator Dr. Vandana Bhalla inspired students to take up such trainings and workshops which will help them upgrade their knowledge and skills. In the first day, Dr. Sripada S. V. Ramasastry, from IISER, Mohali delivered lecture on New Paradigms of Catalysis in Organic Synthesis. The second lecture was delivered by Prof. P. K. Das, from Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, IISc, Bangalore on An Alternative way of looking at thermodynamics. Prof. R. Gupta from Delhi University dwelt at length about Supramolecular Chemistry. Prof. U. Maitra, from IISc, Bangalore gave thought provoking lecture on Stereochemistry and conformation. Prof. Maitra performed live experiments and also involved participants in doing so. After every lecture, session was opened for queries and students cleared their doubts on the relevant subject. 2

3 In the second day, Prof. R. Gupta, from Delhi University delivered lecture on Molecularly Designed Architectures: Lessons learnt from Supramolecular Chemistry. Dr. Vandana Bhalla from delivered an interesting talk on Supramolecular Aggregates: Sensing and Catalytic activity. She explained the practical utility of nano-aggregates for making the reactions facile. Prof. P. K. Das also delivered lecture on Nonlinear optical properties of molecules. Finally, the second day ends up with the lecture of Prof. U. Maitra who delivered a lecture on Learning Chemistry in the computer age and Drug Discovery-Is it really easy? In the third day, Prof. S. Sen delivered an interesting lecture on Fluorescence Spectroscopy: An Overview and Molecular Diffusion. Prof. T. S. Lobana delivered a talk on Coordination Variability of Thiosemicarbozones towards coinage and other metals. Prof. A. K. Ganguli spoke about Micro Emulsions and Superconducting Materials 17 research scholars and 100 post graduate students from colleges and universities across the state have participated and benefitted from this workshop. In all, a total of 14 lectures were given on different aspects of chemistry focusing on fluorescence, non-linear optics. The participants interacted with the speakers and clarified their doubts and they candidly expressed their happiness saying that this workshop was very much helpful for pursuing their research. The valedictory of the workshop was conducted on 5th March at 5.00 pm., by Prof. P. K. Das and Dr. Vandana Bhalla and thanked all the resource persons and the participants during the valedictory session of the workshop. Finally, certificates were distributed to the participants. 3
