1 Industrial Internship Program in Biomedical Engineering * Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University Program Details The goal of the internship program is to create internships at biomedical engineering and biotechnology companies in New York State for graduate students in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University seeking a master's degree in Biomedical Engineering. The post genomic era has accelerated the need for individuals who have cross-disciplinary educations as well as an awareness and understanding of the commercial sector. This program will provide the quality of education and industrial experience that will be critical to the success of New York State s biomedical engineering and biotechnology companies. The Industrial Internship Program will be co-administered with The Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University. Interns will be able to fully integrate cutting edge research in engineering and physical sciences with state of the art biology, and to use that science to drive the development of therapeutics, diagnostics and medical devices. The internship program is committed to integrating research and education in an interdisciplinary environment. Candidate Eligibility: All graduate students enrolled in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University are eligible for the internship program. Application Procedure: Graduate students interested in applying for the internship program, must satisfy the following criteria: 1. Complete the Fundamentals in the Bioscience Industry program (16 week course). 2. Attend mandatory Resume and Cover Letter Writing and Interviewing Skills workshops prior to submitting the official application package. 3. Submit the following Application Package: Application Form (found on BME website, original required) Two letters of recommendation (originals required) An unofficial copy of a transcript (original required) A resume ( via ONLY as a word document) A short essay on your reasons for wanting to participate in this program (via ONLY as a word document) 4. Applicants must hold a valid driver s license and be able to provide their own transportation to the internship site. Updated March 29,

2 Applications are accepted in October for positions starting in May the following year. Deadline for application is March 3, pm. Submit complete application package ( or hard copy) to Celeste Radgowski at at the Center for Biotechnology. Candidate Pre-selection: Qualified candidates selected will work with the Internship Coordinator to develop a list of companies with whom they would like to intern. Each year, interviews will be arranged starting in January and continuing through April. Once an internship offer has been made by a company to a student, the student will have two weeks to respond. Completion of Application Procedure: Upon acceptance of the internship position, the intern will be assigned a BME faculty member to serve in an advisory capacity. The intern will complete a brief Contract Obligation as part of their application, in consultation with this advisor/mentor This requires the intern to write, in their own words, their responsibilities and role at the company, hours and days of work every week, arrangements for regular meetings with their advisor/mentor, and the criteria that will be used to evaluate their performance. Confidentiality Compliance: Interns may be required to sign a confidentiality compliance statement protecting a company s information. Internship Program Details: Internships for Master's students would formally begin following their second academic semester (typically, mid-may). Students would work full-time during the summer and part-time to full-time in the subsequent fall semester, depending on whether the students had any further course requirements. Hence, the internships would be at least three months long, and typically would be for six month. Fulltime internship positions require a commitment of a minimum of 37.5 hours per week. Part-time positions require a commitment of 20 hours per week. Interns will be required to give a formal presentation to the BME Department at the end of their internship term. Academic Credit: The internship is a non-credit program. Stipend: Each intern sponsored by a company will receive a bi-weekly stipend during the internship. Payments will be made to the student by The Research Foundation. Condition for Termination of Internship: Failure to fulfill responsibilities due to tardiness, absence, or other forms of undependability or incompetence, are grounds for dismissal from the program and an unsatisfactory grade. The company supervisor will discuss an unsatisfactory situation with the intern and notify the faculty sponsor before such action. If termination is necessary, the intern should give at least two weeks notice. Updated March 29,
