1 Sixth FORM CENTRE PROSPECTUS WELCOME The Sixth Form Centre at Nottingham Academy offers an ambitious, exciting learning environment, created to drive ambition and focus for Sixth Form students. As a Sixth Form Centre we can offer students aged the best of all worlds. You will be able to choose courses which are right for you, selecting either academic, vocational courses, or a mixture of both. You can also expect great teaching from our excellent staff who are committed to your success. With the range of tutorial support and careers guidance available, you will get the individual advice to help you choose the right career path for you, whether it is for university, training or future employment. We will also keep a careful track of how you are doing, so that if you encounter difficulties in any of your subjects, we can help you to deal with them straight away. The centre is at an exciting new stage of development, it reopened on our Greenwood Campus in September 2016, with modern vibrant facilities for group or individual study, an IT suite, a library and designated outdoor recreation space. The next phase of the development will see a designated cafe space for sixth form students. We welcome applications from students at the Nottingham Academy and those from other schools as well. The application form is available from the Sixth Form Centre, online and by post, but if you have any queries, please contacts us. Our prospectus gives you information about our facilities, courses and extra opportunities. You will have a chance to meet with staff and discuss the courses at our sixth form events and open evening. You can also try out the courses and find out more about what is involved at our Taster Days. We look forward to working with you. MEET THE SIXTH FORM TEAM Our sixth form team offers academic, career and pastoral guidance for all students. MRS GRAY Director of Post-16 Studies Mrs Gray has oversight of Nottingham Academy Sixth Form Centre and deals with both curriculum and student issues. Mrs Gray leads the team of sixth form tutors and support staff. MS WOOD Director of Achievement Our Director of Achievement, Ms Wood, works alongside the Director of Post-16 Studies and the sixth form team to oversee and monitor the academic and social progress of the students. Ms Wood develops strategies to encourage students to become independent learners and take advantage of sixth form opportunities. MRS WINFIELD Attendance Officer MS MERRILL Director of Data and Work Experience We have our own Director of Careers, Ms Merrill, who has great experience in this field. She is able to provide careers education, information and guidance to help you fulfil your potential. As a school we are committed to maintaining regular and punctual attendance. Mrs Winfield is our attendance officer; she is responsible for tracking and monitoring all students so that any issues that may impact on student success can be dealt with promptly. Our experienced learning mentors support students with the transition from secondary to post-16 education. They help students with UCAS applications and personal statements. Regular drop in sessions provide an opportunity, for discussion and strategy development, to resolve any academic and pastoral Issues. 2 COURSE GUIDE At Nottingham Academy all Post-16 provision is Level 3 this means qualifications at an advanced level; it is the step up after GCSE. There are different qualifications at this level, they include: GCE A Level BTEC National Extended Certificate OCR Cambridge Diploma You will need to meet the academic entry requirements for each course. This is because the courses are challenging and we must be sure that you have the ability and skills to be successful. In order to study at level 3 you must have at least 5 GCSEs at C or above (or level 4), including English, in addition some subjects will specific requirements see course guide. Any student starting level 3 courses without a level 4 in mathematics will have to retake this in year 12. We expect you to take four subjects in year 12. Each course takes two years to reach the full qualification. However, vocational courses will have external examinations throughout the two years. ACADEMIC OR VOCATIONAL? Academic courses are traditional courses which deal with more theoretical ideas. You will need to process information and usually present ideas in written form, often as reports or essays. Some courses will also include practical elements and a little coursework, but overall they will be assessed by examination. If you want to go into a traditional career such as medicine or law, you will need academic subjects. If you are planning to go on to university you should take at least one academic subject. Vocational courses are work-related qualifications. They are designed to allow you to learn in a way that suits you, and give you the skills that employers are looking for. There will be more practical activities and you will produce a portfolio of coursework. You will get feedback on how you are doing during the course and how to aim higher. Vocational qualifications can lead on to training, employment and vocational courses at university.

3 CHOOSING YOUR COURSE IT IS YOUR DECISION WHICH COURSES YOU CHOOSE, BUT ONCE YOU START, YOU NEED TO STICK AT THEM! DO Choose courses you enjoy and want to spend your free time studying. Choose courses you are good at, which use your strengths. Choose courses which are relevant for your future career. Choose courses which go well together and support each other e.g. mathematics and physics. Talk to your teachers and your parents. Find out what the course involves. Research which qualifications a university requires for different degrees. DO NOT Just do what your friends are doing. Choose a subject just because you like the teacher. REMEMBER DO get your application form in on time! When you apply you will need to list the subjects you are interested in. We will then use this to plan the timetable and group the subjects into option blocks. We will try and fit you with as many of your choices as possible, as long as you apply before the deadline of February half-term. 4 ENRICHMENT Nottingham Academy Sixth Form opens up many new, wonderful experiences as well as academic and vocational learning we provide extensive opportunities for you to develop character, resilience and prepare for life beyond the Academy. TUTORIAL PROGRAMME Supporting you all the way Tutor time is an opportunity to get all the information you need. You will find out about careers and work experience, as well as trips and social events. Tutors will also work with you on a programme linked to personal, health and social education whether it is finding out how to manage a bank account or how to stay healthy. You will also get help with study skills, so that you can cope with the increased demands of studying at a higher level. Planning the next step in your life will also form part of your tutorial programme. You will meet with outside experts who will give you the facts about applying to university, apprenticeships or work places. You will find out how to apply for a job with a CV and covering letter. There is also an extensive programme of support to help you with your UCAS application to university. Practical skills are essential in life and you will have the opportunity to become a fully rounded individual through the enrichment programme which includes: Young Enterprise Wildlife Trust - Creating a Buzz Life Matters Day Mentoring with younger pupils School Council Sixth form newspaper SPORT Post-16 sport sessions run weekly for students to attend and take part in some form of physical activity. In the last academic year we entered tournaments for dodgeball (mixed), male and female football, badminton, basketball and hockey. There are indoor and outdoor facilities for student sports activities. PAIRED READING Why not join in our popular Paired Reading scheme? You ll get a chance to support younger pupils, listening to them read and helping them to gain confidence. It s a great way to gain relevant experience and it is fun as well. You will be trained to take on this role, receiving guidance on the best way to develop a young person s reading skills and how to give feedback on their progress. You will even help to assess their performance. Paired Reading sessions take place every week on the Greenwood Campus and Ransom Road Campus. DUKE OF EDINBURGH Nottingham Academy offers students the chance to follow through their previous Duke of Edinburgh Awards at Bronze and Silver and complete the Gold Award. This helps you develop skills for work and life. To achieve the Gold Award you need to do some volunteering, learn a new skill and take up a physical activity and complete a 4 day expedition.

5 BASKETBALL ACADEMY For those students who are keen basketball players, Nottingham Academy offers the opportunity of individual and group coaching from a national expert alongside their academic studies. The Basketball Academy was set up in 2010 to offer a basketball programme integrated into the Academy day. Young people from across the East Midlands region have joined us to take part in the scheme. Post-16 students are able to use their study time, as well as before school, lunchtime and after school to gain a total of hours a week of specialised coaching. Phil Waghorn has been involved in English basketball both as a player and a coach for many years. As a player Phil came up through the ranks of the Brighton Bears, being lucky enough to attend High School in America before returning and becoming part of a Championship winning Bears team. He then spent a number of years as Sussex Basketball Development Officer, helping to develop basketball across the county. For the last 6 summers Phil has worked as a Team Manager with the Great Britain Men s Team. This role provided Phil with the once in a lifetime experience of working with the team in the London Olympics. WHAT THE PLAYERS HAVE TO SAY It s been an amazing experience. For the past 2 years training near enough every day, working on my game, putting in the hours and playing a variety of games going from local to Men s National league. Travelling around England meeting new players seeing what they have to offer with the guidance of Phil day in day out continuously giving his thoughts and options which has made me become a more mature person, with a better understanding of basketball and even an improved player eager to learn more. This opportunity has been great and I cannot wait to continue. Akil Robinson (Student) In addition to my education at Nottingham Academy I have been part of the Basketball Academy. I have really improved and have had a lot of success; Phil Waghorn and Ben have made a huge impact in the way that I now play, coaching me and pushing me to achieve my 100% best. They have helped me mentally and physically to reach closer and closer to my dream of playing for England. The Basketball Academy has helped me in school and after school, making sure that my basketball does not distract my studies. Nottingham Academy has changed my life for the better, opening up many opportunities for me in the future. Caitlin Riley (student) PLAYER AND TEAM SUCCESS 6 players, past and present have represented England at their respective age group. 3 former players now attend university in America. 18 players played in the National League Final Fours at club level. The 6th Form Girls have been national semi-finalists for 3 consecutive years. U19 Boys were BE National schools semifinalists last season and now compete in the ABL. PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT The Basketball Academy now runs throughout the school. Last season the U16 girls were National Runners-up. The Academy now has some 60 students practicing upwards of 10 hours a week. Ben Stanley joined us last year as a second full time member of staff. Ben not only offers expertise on the basketball court but also has a mentoring role for our Academy players. We offer a unique opportunity for students to develop and explore their capabilities within the sport of basketball while continuing their education to a high level. 6 SIXTH FORM BURSARY FUND Students can apply for the bursary each year. This fund is designed to help young people who face financial challenges if they choose to continue in further education. Eligibility To be eligible to receive a bursary you must: be aged over 16 and under 19 on 31 August 2018 satisfy residency criteria (as defined in the Education Funding Agency regulations for post-16 provision) To continue to receive a bursary you must also meet targets such as attendance, punctuality, behavior and coursework deadlines which will be agreed with you by the Director of Sixth Form Studies. The Bursary Fund has two elements: Vulnerable Bursary This is a maximum bursary of 1,200 per year to support the young people in most need. These have been identified by the government as young people who are: in care care leavers getting Income Support (IS), or Universal Credit (UC) in place of Income Support, in their own right getting Employment Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit (UC) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payments in their own right Discretionary Bursary Discretionary bursaries are awards made to other students facing financial barriers to participation in education, such as the cost of transport, meals, books and equipment which are dependent on household income. If you are entitled to Free School Meals or your parent/ guardian s income is less than 25,000 you may be entitled to this award. In order to assess eligibility, the Academy will request information relating to all aspects of household income: Payslips P60 Evidence of income from self-employment Tax Credits forms (TC602) Award letter for any benefits Changes in Circumstance during the Academic Year A small contingency amount is retained by the Academy from the overall bursary fund so that some support may be available in the event of a sudden deterioration in the financial circumstances of a student. Payments to students may also be adjusted to take account of improvements in a student s circumstances. Deadline for Applications Those wishing to apply for a bursary must complete the application form and return it with the supporting documentation outlined on the form in a sealed envelope addressed to Miss S Merrill C/O Sixth Form Office, Greenwood Road, Nottingham. NG3 7EB. The deadline for all applications is Friday 21st September If your form is incomplete or the required documentary information is missing you will be asked to resubmit your application. Applications for Discretionary Bursary received after Friday 2st September 2018 will be processed as a change in circumstances application. Confidentiality We understand that some students may be reluctant to apply for a bursary because we are asking for sensitive personal information. We wish to assure students that we protect the confidentiality of the information provided under the Data Protection Act We store the application forms and supporting documentary evidence securely and access to this information is carefully controlled. Only a small number of staff will have access to your applications. Confirmation of Award and Payments We will write to all applicants to confirm if their bursary application has been approved, how much has been awarded and when payments will be made. All payments are made by BACs into a bank account. Decisions All applications will be considered and assessed by the Director of Post-16 Studies. You will be notified of the decision within 21 days of receipt of your application. If your application is rejected you have the right to appeal and/or complain to the Director of Post-16 Studies if you feel that your case has not been given fair consideration. This must be in writing. The final decision rests with the Principal.
