2 Youth Strategy In June 2012 the National Government published ten challenging outcomes required from the public sector. Out of this announcement a set of targets were released for achievement over the following 5 years. Boosting skills and employment Increase the proportion of 18 year olds with NCEA Level 2 or equivalent qualification Increase the proportion of year olds with advance trade qualifications, diplomas and degrees (at level 4 or above).

3 CPIT s Vision for Youth CPIT will support and encourage Youth (under 25 s) to gain qualifications, skills and knowledge which will enable them to make confident decisions about their futures and successfully pathway to further tertiary study or employment

5 WHAT HAVE WE LEARNT? Head tutor Meet all tutors early If a student does not learn the way we teach then we must teach the way they learn. Hands on learning works! Regular communication with Tutors, schools and Whanau Open door policy for students Regular visits to classes from Student Support staff for specific Youth Initiatives Limited class room time - keep them moving! Practical activities

6 STUDENTS THOUGHTS I was told I would never achieve anything as I could not apply myself I have now achieved a Level 3 qualification and will continue studying next year in Human Services I am now turning up every day and I am on time I feel confident in dealing with people I am good at hands on stuff I know I can achieve an apprenticeship now Being treated like an adult it s not like school and I look forward to coming here Free education.amazing! Now understand what is expected of me when I decide to do Tertiary study again

7 What is the Canterbury Tertiary College? The Canterbury Tertiary College s aim is to provide a solution for transition between secondary and tertiary education for year 11 to year 13 students already looking beyond the school Gates. Programmes offered in the CTC: Health and Support Applied Engineering Introduction to Trades pathway from YR11 to specific trades training in YR12 and YR13 Plumbing/Gasfitting Carpentry Automotive Electrical Engineering Mechanical Engineering Painting and Decorating/Plasterboard Civil Construction/Drainlaying Hairdressing Business Administration Introduction to Hair & Beauty, Café and Tourism Outdoor Education and Sustainability Hospitality and Cookery Maori Studies Supported Learning Construction & Hospitality

8 How Does it Work? Standard model: 2 days per week (Thu and Fri) 12hrs onsite at CTC provider location Students work towards completing a CPIT qualification and/or a National qualification All credits go towards NCEA Individual arrangements include: 1 x day per week Dual delivery CPIT qualification with secondary and tertiary tutors sharing the delivery Block courses

9 What does 2014 look like: Canterbury Tertiary College 450 places Indications from secondary schools throughout Canterbury are that we will have more students than places how are we going to meet students needs? Partnerships Schools, other tertiary providers, industry Dual delivery Alternative funding models STAR/Operations Grant Support from community business to cover material costs to reduce overall costs for schools and CPIT

10 How do we align across Secondary and Tertiary? TO DATE: Workshop with key secondary school staff to look at alignment with CTC programmes and Vocational Pathways CPIT has had NZQA present to all tutorial staff to support programme development

11 ITS ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS Students will not learn from someone they do not like. Especially with people in poverty, relationships are their most prized possession.
