Our exchange partnerships with a number of international universities give you a fantastic opportunity to live and study in another country during your second year. What is international exchange? If you are undertaking an undergraduate degree in the School of Arts and Humanities you can apply for an optional semester-long exchange to a partner university during the second half of the second year of your degree. We have developed a reciprocal exchange agreement with a number of universities and educational institutions across the world. You can take appropriate modules at a chosen exchange university and NTU will recognise the associated credits and count them towards your degree. Our agreement with partner universities stipulates that you will continue to pay your domestic fees while on exchange, enabling you to study in a foreign country without incurring additional international tuition fees. All of our international exchange partners have been checked and approved as appropriate educational providers for our students. It allows you to: Immerse yourself in a different culture Pick up a new language See the world from a different perspective Develop your independence while gaining key skills valued by employers Live and travel for up to six months in Europe, Australia, USA, Canada, South Korea, Malaysia or Thailand Diversify your subject knowledge Earn credits that count towards your degree Spending a semester abroad also allows you time to fully embrace the experience, make new friends and open the door to global networking opportunities. My experience has made me more confident as an individual. I now feel more comfortable talking to new people and visiting places on my own. NTU is a member of the US-based ISEP network, which offers opportunities for NTU students to undertake an exchange at any one of their 300+ members worldwide. There may be some additional fees to pay for attending an ISEP partner but if you have your heart set on a particular destination, ISEP might be for you. Visit to find out more. Global Lounge When do I need to decide? Your first step to an amazing experience on international exchange is to attend one of our briefing events where you can find out everything you need to know about where you can go, how to apply and what support is available. International exchange briefing event: November, Year One Applications open: December, Year One Applications close: February, Year One Further International exchange briefing events: May, Year One and November, Year Two Go on international exchange January June, Year Two The Erasmus+ Grant The Erasmus + scheme is administered by the British Council with the support of the European Commission and allows you to study abroad at one of our European Erasmus + partner from three to twelve months. If you are taking part in an Erasmus+ Study or NTU approved Traineeship in Europe you might be eligible to apply for an Erasmus+ Grant. These grants assist with any additional expenditure incurred through living abroad. NTU students who studied abroad under Erasmus+ in previous years received a grant of a month depending on the country they visited. For students identified as 'widening participation, there is extra financial support (currently an additional 100 a month) for those doing a period of studying abroad. What are my housing options in Nottingham before going on exchange? Housing worries needn t be a barrier to going on exchange. More and more landlords and companies have realised there is a market for short term contracts, so you will have plenty of options for your first semester before exchange. Take a look in the NOW Learning Room called International Exchange Semester School of Arts and Humanities for a list of landlords and companies that offer these shorter contracts. Funding If you take part in the international exchange you are eligible to receive your maintenance loan / grant from your national student finance service, as usual and may also be eligible for a travel grant. If you are studying at one of our partners in Europe you are eligible to apply for an Erasmus mobility grant. The grant provides a small allowance to support living costs while on exchange. Visit to find out more about fees and funding while studying abroad. What are the costs involved? You will be required to pay for your associated flight, accommodation, medical and travel insurance, any visa fees and living costs. Core expenses, food and entertainment costs will vary depending on the country in which you study. You will avoid international tuition fees by paying your agreed domestic tuition fees during your international exchange. 4 Support Requirements Support You will be supported by our own International Exchange Coordinator as well as by your adoptive university. Our International Exchange Coordinator will: Act as a point of contact for you before, during and after the international exchange Receive applications Nominate you to a host institution We will also support you in finding accommodation at your exchange institution for the required period, by putting you in touch with the exchange coordinator at the relevant partner university. While abroad, you will be taught, supported and examined as if you were a domestic student in that institution. There may be students from other countries / universities on exchange at the same time as you, providing a truly international study experience Will I study in English? All of our exchange partners offer modules taught in English, including European partners. However we can offer exchange to institutions that teach in French, German, Italian and Spanish for students studying modern languages as part of their degree. Visa requirements If you are wishing to go on exchange outside of the European Union (EU) or are an international student studying at Nottingham Trent University our International Student Support Service can assist you in applying for the correct visa. Can I go on international exchange if I am doing a Languages degree? If you are taking a Joint Honours degree that includes a modern language, and are spending a year abroad during your third year, you can also take advantage of the semester long international exchange options during Year Two if you wish. 5 Profile Opportunities Alumni profile James Rossington studied at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand now teaching in China Studying abroad gave me the opportunity to put to use a lot of what I had been learning in the previous two years of my degree. I would say it was vital to my academic progression at NTU. It inspired me to write my dissertation on the effects of globalisation on Thai and migrant culture in Bangkok. Going on exchange also gave me the chance to interact with students from other cultures and backgrounds as well as the freedom to travel. During my time in Bangkok I visited places such as Ayuttaya, the old Thai capital, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Krabi and many of the islands. After the exchange was over I was lucky enough to volunteer for a month in a school in Ubon Ratchatani, in the east of Thailand. I also spent the summer travelling Cambodia and Vietnam. I currently teach English and Cultural Studies at an international college in Chengdu, China, to students who want to attend UK or US universities. My time abroad demonstrated to my current employers that I have the ability to communicate with people from different cultures as well as the experience of studying in another country. I couldn't recommend the international exchange programme enough. You get a chance to live in another country, make many new friends and the opportunity to experience another culture first hand. Other international opportunities There are many other ways in which you can internationalise your degree experience while at NTU. These could make your time abroad either longer or shorter: Summer School opportunities at NTU partner universities Summer school opportunities at NTU partner universities are a great way to study a specialised subject area with a very diverse group of students, allowing you to gain an edge within your discipline and stand out from others. These programmes have a solid cultural agenda that will enable you to discover and understand a new culture. Our summer schools are held in a variety of locations and are available on most of our courses. NTU International Volunteering Volunteering overseas gives you the opportunity to experience new cultures and meet new people whilst challenging yourself to develop and share your skills. It s your chance to contribute towards the aims and goals of one of our fantastic projects and the communities you will visit; enhancing your life experience and being part of a shared goal to help develop the global community you are part of will make a great addition to your CV! 07 Outbound exchange Outbound exchange 08

6 Final words I can t recommend the exchange enough. It s a once in a lifetime opportunity. It will change you as a person, and it will be the best six months of your time at university.
