The Marco Antonio Firebaugh Scholars is a program housed at the University of California, Berkeley Division of Equity and Inclusion. Through the collaboration of established academic programs at UC Berkeley including the Academic Achievement Programs, the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, the Undocumented Student Program, the Rising Immigrant Scholars through Education Student Group, Chicanx Latinx Student Development office and the Center for Educational Equity and Excellence, and the Underground Scholars Initiative, we announce the establishment of the Marco Antonio Firebaugh Scholars Program that provides research opportunities to undocumented students, AB540 students and Underground Scholars who come from first-generation college and low-income families, underrepresented backgrounds in higher education or formerly incarcerated scholars. In addition to providing the opportunity to obtain research experience, we will help Firebaugh Scholars complete a competitive graduate school or post-baccalaureate program application packet. The program will select ten undocumented or AB540 Students and five Underground Scholars who will design and carry out an independent faculty-sponsored research. Scholars will take a Research Seminar course during the spring semester. During this time, students develop their research proposal, generate a research question, select a method of inquiry, and design a plan for conducting and completing their research during the summer of In the summer, students also work on researching different graduate school or postbaccalaureateate programs, secure strong letters of recommendation, write their statement of purpose and personal statement, get GRE training, and put together a strong application packet. Our goal is for these ten students to continue on to a post baccalaureate program or graduate school and help diversify the faculty at colleges and universities in the United States. We welcome applications to recruit our Marco Antonio Firebaugh Scholars cohort. 11 McNair Application FAQ s Q: Do the letters need to be from UC Berkeley professors? A: All applicants must submit 2 letters of recommendation. Your application will be read and scored by UC Berkeley professors, who often value the recommendation of their peers the most. If you cannot secure a letter from 2 UC Berkeley faculty, then 1 letter from faculty and 1 letter from a GSI is sufficient. Q: I am an incoming transfer student, can I get letters from my Community College Instructors? A: Yes, this is acceptable if you cannot secure a strong letters from UC Berkeley faculty. Q: What if my letter of recommendation arrives past the deadline? A: No applications will be considered past the application deadline. Q: I am graduating in Semester, I am still eligible to apply? A: In order to participate as a McNair Scholar, you must be enrolled in the Spring 2017 semester. You must be available to do full time research during Summer Q: I am considering a joint Ph.D.-M.D. degree, or Joint Ph.D. + J.D. degree, can I apply? A: Yes, however you must be very clear that a Ph.D. is necessary for your academic pursuits. Q: Do I need to have a Faculty mentor when I apply? A: No, we can work with you to find a faculty mentor if you are accepted into the program. If you have already secured a mentor, please mention it in your application. Q: What if my GPA is not a 3.0? A: We understand that not all GPA s are weighed equally in every major, however, we are unable to admit any students who do not meet this requirement. Q: Can I study abroad in the summer and still participate in the McNair Scholars Program? A: No, you must be available to do research June 1- August 7. If your research requires you to travel, then you must be granted permission and return to Berkeley by July 7. Q: What does the timeline for participation in the McNair Program look like? A: Generally, spring semester you work on a research proposal. Summer you implement the research project and present your work in August. Fall semester you publish in the McNair Journal and apply to graduate school. Q: Can I get a letter of recommendation from an employer or an organization I volunteered for? A: Faculty (academic) letters are best. The recommender should speak to your ability to do research. Q: What if I am not completely sure about my research topic? A: Answer it to the best of your ability for the application. Your topic may change once you are admitted into the program. 10
