2 Week 1 Personal Financial Literacy Materials: Blackline Masters: Skills 1, 2, 3, 4 (2 pages), 1 per student Teacher Copies: Skills 4 Pencils Paper Expenses: The amount of money needed to pay for or buy something. Fixed Expenses: Expenses that are paid on a regular basis as a fixed amount (amount does not change) such as rent, mortgages, car payment, insurance, etc. Variable Expenses: Expenses that do not have a fixed amount (amount paid changes) such as gasoline, groceries, clothing, entertainment, etc. Profit: When selling an item or service, the amount of money left from the total received after all expenses have been paid. Earn: To obtain money in return for work we do or services we provide. Income: The payment (money) people receive for providing work or labor. Mon Skills 1 Defining Expenses 1. After reviewing each vocabulary term with students, create a web diagram and write the word expenses in the center as shown. 3 Review the definition of expenses. 2. Say: As adults we have expenses that we need to pay for on a regular basis. Some are fixed (ex. Mortgages) and others are variable (ex. Groceries) Have students fill in the web diagram by deciding which expenses their family (or themselves) may have on a weekly/monthly basis. 3. Have students work in small groups. Assign each group a word from the list of financial terms. Have them complete Skills 1, using their assigned vocabulary word.
