1 ACADEMIC JOB DETAILS School of Pharmacy Teaching Fellow/Lecturer/Senior Lecturer Grade: F/G/H Vacancy Ref: A69002A Academic roles summary The University has developed Academic Job Summary Guidance which summarises the range of activities that academic staff may be expected to perform. Academic staff are not expected to be discharging all of the activities all of the time and the actual duties and activities that academic staff are expected to carry out will be determined by the Head of Academic Unit. The Job Summary Guidance document can be found at Academic Staff Development Newcastle University accords parity of esteem to teaching and research; aims to deliver teaching and facilitate learning of the highest quality; and invests in excellent staff. A popular course in academic practice is available for staff with responsibilities in teaching and research supervision and new appointees are required to gain the first module. Full details of Newcastle University s Certificate in Advanced Studies in Academic Practice can be found at Teaching Fellow Specific Responsibilities: To develop and deliver teaching to undergraduates to meet School and Faculty teaching objectives, specifically: Develop and deliver lectures and seminars for the School s programmes, initially with a focus on the MPharm programme but extending to taught postgraduate provision; Develop, supervise and deliver practical laboratory teaching; Undertake supervision of undergraduate honours project work; Contribute to curriculum development by designing and developing new modes of delivery; Set and mark assessments including both formative and summative; Prepare course materials including programme study guides; Develop resources for teaching and learning, assess their effectiveness and disseminate internally and/or externally as appropriate.

2 To undertake activities in order to support students, specifically: Advise and counsel students in relation to their progress; Undertake pastoral support for students by acting as a personal tutor, interfacing where necessary with the Senior Tutor. To contribute to administration in order to ensure the smooth running of degree programmes within the School and Faculty, specifically: Undertake a role in curriculum organisation, design and development for the School programmes; Assist in the management of admissions, placements, teaching, assessment and evaluation as required. To contribute to research and scholarship in order to enhance the reputation of the School, Faculty and University, specifically: Contribute to the research programme within School of Pharmacy by developing an area of interest in relation to the Faculty priorities and disseminating such research by means including presentations at meetings and publishing in well-regarded journals. To undertake other duties as required by the Head of School; Person Specification: Teaching Fellow Knowledge (inc. qualifications) A good honours degree in Pharmacy or a related subject. PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject. A HE teaching qualification or equivalent experience. Registrant of the General Pharmaceutical Council. Postdoctoral research experience and/or relevant workplace experience Skills (professional, technical, managerial, practical) The knowledge, ability and expertise to teach the relevant subject area at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including large and small group teaching and project supervision. The ability to engage counselling skills and provide pastoral care where appropriate. Ability to engage in high quality research and/or scholarship that can command international recognition.

3 Ability to work collaboratively and constructively with both academic colleagues and professional services staff to encourage the commitment of others. Good networking skills and the ability to develop productive links with fellow professionals from other organisations and agencies with whom the University interacts. Experience of presenting to a range of audiences, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, academics, industry partners and practitioners. Effective time management and prioritisation skills and the ability to meet deadlines. Leadership potential. Evidence of previous leadership experience within an MPharm programme team. Experience and Achievements Knowledge, ability and expertise to teach in a range of pharmacy related disciplines in higher education. A track record of excellence in research and publication, commensurate with the level of appointment and current experience. 4 Lecturer Specific Responsibilities: To undertake teaching, module leadership and supervision of under-, and postgraduate students; To offer expertise in an individual s specialist area(s) in relation to research and teaching; To undertake teaching, leadership and supervision duties across a range of the School programmes, initially with a focus on the MPharm programme; To undertake research of the highest quality and present findings in appropriate, internationally leading publications; To obtain funds to sustain a portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects; To supervise research students and staff, and ensure their effective development, as appropriate; To undertake administrative duties as deemed necessary, including participation in relevant School and Faculty committees and activities; To participate in external activity related to pharmacy, learning and teaching, and research; To contribute to the promotion of undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy programmes to both current and prospective students; To act as a personal tutor to a small group of students, concerned with students academic achievements, and pastoral care; To contribute to University administration, course planning, curriculum development, the recruitment of students, engage in teaching and scholarly activities and module/programme leadership; To participate in relevant staff development activities; To undertake other duties, such as participation in School, Faculty and University meetings, as detailed by the Head of School.

5 Person Specification: Lecturer Knowledge (inc. Qualifications) PhD or Professional Doctorate in Pharmacy or closely related subject. Understanding of current themes and issues in the delivery of accredited MPharm programmes. Specialist knowledge and interest in an area relevant to the MPharm programme. Registrant of the General Pharmaceutical Council Fellow/Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy; Skills (professional, technical, managerial, practical) Excellent communication skills both verbal and written; Creativity and innovation; Ability to work well on own initiative and as part of a team; Excellent organisational, administrative and planning skills. Experience and Achievements (paid or unpaid) Experience of teaching pharmacy at undergraduate, and postgraduate level; Experience in the supervision of undergraduate, and postgraduate dissertation students; Understanding and experience in processes involved in module and programme development and leadership. Track record in publishing in peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with career stage; Experience in research and/or trainee practitioner supervision. Other Committed and enthusiastic; Confident communicator. Good interpersonal skills. Empathetic to the needs of staff and of a diverse student body.

6 Senior Lecturer Specific Responsibilities: To develop and lead a vigorous research programme at an international level, to seek external funds to support and sustain their research, to supervise research students, as well as making a full and engaging contribution to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research. Key responsibilities are: Undertake research of the highest quality and present findings in appropriate, internationally leading publications; Obtain funds to sustain a portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects; Play a leading role in the supervision of research students and staff, and ensure their effective development, as appropriate; Lead/contribute to the planning and delivery of undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching activities within Pharmacy, with a commitment to a research-led approach to student learning; If appropriate, engage in the dissemination of high quality research through commercialisation, technology transfer, outreach, and impact; Undertake administrative duties allocated by the Head of School in an effective and proactive manner. Person Specification: Senior Lecturer Knowledge (inc. Qualifications) A good first degree, and a Ph.D. or equivalent in Pharmacy or cognate subjects. An established reputation in an internationally competitive field of research within Pharmacy that enhances or extends existing research themes within the School. The knowledge, ability and expertise to teach undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Pharmacy. HE Teaching qualification or equivalent teaching experience. Skills (professional, technical, managerial, practical) Undertake high quality research that shapes the disciplinary agenda. Ability to secure research grant funding, lead a research team and further enhance your international profile. Work as part of a team, as well as on own initiative. Contribute to the strategic development of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Pharmacy. Ability and willingness to take on appropriate administrative duties within Pharmacy and/or the Faculty. Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) in a range of contexts. 7 Experience and Achievements (paid or unpaid) A track record of excellence in research and publications of the highest international quality, and of winning research funding, especially from RCUK/EU sources or their equivalents. A record of high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in lab/classroombased environments. Evidence of research esteem, e.g. leading national and/or international research networks, membership of an RCUK Peer Review College or research facility, international/national research committees, editorial boards etc. A track record of successful Ph.D. supervision. A record of engagement and impact-generation arising from research with nonacademic research users. A record of administration and leadership, commensurate with the level of appointment.
