4 VALENCIA, SPAIN There are few cities like Valencia, able to harmoniously combine the remnants of its farthest past, dating to the year 138 BC, with the most innovative and avant-garde buildings from the new millennium. Valencia is trade and culture, cinema, theatre, museums, magic, business. It is the centre of international and avant-garde design, and one of the most active cities in Europe regarding fairs and conferences. Thanks to its location, Valencia has historically been Spain s Mediterranean port and has that special charm of cities that are also seaports. And the fine sand and clean water, the vastness of the sea and the closeness of the coastal mountains make the Valencian coast uniquely attractive. There are outstanding beaches and dunes at Canet d En Berenguer, where the coastline becomes leisurely and residential, as it does to the north of the Valencian capital, where small tourist town (La Pobla de Farnals, Alboraya, and El Puig) have emerged where only a few years ago fruit and vegetables were grown. In addition, still within the city of Valencia, the beaches of La Malvarrosa and Levante offer a wide variety of places to dine and enjoy a quiet evening by the sea. To the south, nature becomes predominant at Saler Beach and in the L Albufera Nature Reserve, where the sun can be enjoyed in unique surroundings. 5 POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF VALENCIA La Universidad Politécnica de Valencia Our University is a modern institution. Its history goes back only 40 years, although some of its departmental schools have existed for more than a century, such as the School of Engineering Design, the Higher Polytechnic School of Alcoy and the Faculty of Fine Arts. The University was established in 1971 with the creation of the Higher Polytechnic School of Valencia. However, it was not until the 11th of March 1971 when a decree gave the Higher Polytechnic School of Valencia the highest academic rank and our institution finally became the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. From then on, several institutions were incorporated: The Faculty of Fine Arts, the School of Engineering Design, the School of Applied Computing Science, the Faculty of Computing Science, the School of Engineering in Geodesy, Cartography and Surveying and the School of Telecommunications Engineering and the School of Civil Engineering. Currently, the University s community is made up of over 42,000 people. Of these, nearly 37,800 are students, 2,600 are members of the teaching and research staff and 1,700 are administrative and services personnel. Passing most subjects involves taking a final written or oral examination. Grade system The Spanish grading system is a decimal system ranging between 0 and 10. These grades will be given in grade lists together with a non-numerical grade. In order to pass a subject, a grade equal to or higher than 5 is required. To do so, the UPV keeps a database with information about students and individuals offering and requesting shared flats, stays with a family or flats to rent. We also have a Hall of Residence which can be found on-campus called Colegio Mayor Galileo Galilei, available for students to rent rooms, even if students are only looking to stay one night. Transport Valencia s good climate and orography makes walking and biking a perfect way to get around. If you bike, there is an extensive bike track (CarrilBici) across the city, but remember to follow the circulation rules. Valencia also has a vast network of public transportation comprised of buses, metro and tram or streetcar, which allow you to move through the whole city. The 57 EMT bus lines (red colour) allow you to get everywhere in the city. 5 metro lines connect other places of the city and the metropolitan area. If you are 30 years old or younger, you can obtain a youth card at the Instituto Valenciano de la Juventud. With this card you can obtain discounts for transportation. 7
