2 The academic structure of The University of Manchester is made up of Faculties and Schools. There are four Faculties and further information about each Faculty and its related Schools can be found at UoM Faculties and Schools. The Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences The Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences is a leading international centre for research and education in medicine and a spectrum of health-related professions including nursing, midwifery, social work, pharmacy, dentistry, psychology, audiology and speech and language therapy. A major review in 2011/12 led to a new strategy and structure intended to enhance our research and teaching performance. A key component of the new approach is the creation of a matrix structure linking five Faculty Schools with six Faculty Institutes. The objective is to ensure that the Faculty achieves a major international academic profile in each priority area within a period of five years. The new strategy will focus our research effort in six priority areas: Human Development including Women s and Children s Health Cardiovascular Sciences Cancer Science Inflammation and Repair Brain, Behaviour and Mental Health Population and Health Sciences Details of the structure can be found at: FMHS Structure. FMHS has a total income of 210 million, around 6,500 undergraduate students and 2,500 post graduate students. The Faculty has strong relationships with outstanding NHS partners which are critical in achieving our mission. Manchester Academic Health Science Centre The University, and in particular the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, is a key member of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC). Formed in 2008, MAHSC is a Federation of Equal Partners enabled by a Company Limited by Guarantee. The partners involved in the MAHSC are: The University of Manchester, Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust, Salford Primary Care Trust (NHS Salford), Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust.

3 MAHSC is one of only five Department of Health designated AHSCs in the UK. The designation is a mark of excellence across research, innovation, education and patient service, and recognition of the potential to excel in translational medicine. MAHSC s vision is to be a leading global centre for the delivery of innovative applied health research and education into healthcare. As with other AHSCs, MAHSC has a dual role: to act as a beacon of international excellence for UK plc and to provide leadership and early adoption for our local health system. This will be delivered via a tripartite approach encompassing: research and innovation; education and training and clinical service. For further information, please refer to the MAHSC website: Faculty Institute of Human Development The Institute of Human Development ( is one of six Research Institutes in the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences. Research interests range from basic science through to applied and population based medicine across a range of clinical specialities. There are five Centres within the Institute: Endocrinology and Diabetes Genomic Medicine (MCGM) Hearing and Vision Research Paediatrics and Child Health Women's Health Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine Clinical Genomics is a rapidly emerging area in healthcare both nationally, as illustrated by the creation of the 100,000 genome project, and internationally. In order to translate genomics data into real patient benefit and deliver a personalised medicine approach analysis of genomic data needs to be undertaken by skilled multidisciplinary team including highly trained clinical scientists, genetic counsellors and bioinformaticians, of which currently there are acute global shortages. The University has key strengths in clinical genomics and bioinformatics, illustrated through investment in The Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine, The Faculty of Life Sciences Bioinformatics Core Facility, The Health eresearch Centre, translational research, and the cutting-edge bioinformatics used in clinical service at St Mary s Hospital, Manchester. Over the past three years FMHS has become Health Education England s preferred provider for education and training in genomic medicine, bioinformatics and clinical genomics; as testified by

4 successful tenders to deliver Masters programmes in Clinical Bioinformatic, Genomic Medicine and most recently Genomic Sciences. The MSc in Genomic Sciences is the academic component of the scientist-training programme (STP) for NHS genomic scientists, and is the only programme of its type in the UK. Through securing this programme Manchester became the national lead for the education and training of NHS genomic scientists and Genetic Counsellors. From 2016 the MSC Genomic Sciences will deliver the academic component for genetic counsellor training in England (MSc Genomic Counselling), and for clinical scientist training (MSc Genomics). This Clinical Genomic/Genetics Lecturer post, for 3 years in the first instance will support the new Masters programme in Genomic Sciences and will also focus on the expansion of this programme to include continuing professional development and distance learning. Overall Purpose of the Post: The post holder will contribute to the management and on-going development, administration and delivery of postgraduate teaching and research provision in the area of clinical and medical genomics/genetics within the Faculty. Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities or Duties: Teaching and Learning Support Deliver on and develop the Masters programme Genomic Sciences. Contribute to the delivery of postgraduate teaching within The Faculty, including preparing and giving lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops. Contribute to the design, preparation and development of learning materials. Contribute to the development and marking of assessments to accurately measure students performance and understanding. Supervise or co-supervise taught postgraduate students in the completion of their programmes of study. Provide advice and guidance to students to support their academic and personal progress. Contribute to research and development of innovative methods of teaching, learning and assessment. Undertake module leadership and management, including associated administrative activities, including building online content. Leadership and Management Provide academic leadership in clinical genomics/genetics.

5 Lead and participate in internal and external networks to foster collaboration and to promote The University of Manchester nationally and internationally in the area of Genomic Sciences Be an active member of the Faculty, liaising with staff at all levels with regard to teaching, research and administration. Liaise with The National School of Healthcare Sciences and work-based supervisors as per the needs of the scientist training programme in Genomic Sciences and also the Higher Specialist Scientific Training Programme. Liaise with patient representatives in order to develop the curriculum and teaching. Forge interdisciplinary collaborations across MAHSE and MAHSC. Identify opportunities for development of new continuing professional development in the area of clinical bioinformatics by maintaining a thorough working knowledge of current issues, practice and policies in the healthcare sector. Undertake appropriate training and continuing professional development activities, including completion of the New Academics Programme. Research Engage with the research community in clinical genomics/genetics and related disciplines in the University and NHS contexts to support the development of translational research Ensure teaching reflects current state of clinical genomics/genetics research Ensure support provided to students in their research project is informed by the current research agenda Support application and development of pedagogic research appropriate to the genomic sciences programme Write and publish the results of original research in peer-reviewed high impact journals of international standing. Contribute to the University of Manchester s research activity and in the pursuit of the University s research objectives. Develop productive national and international research collaborations and partnerships Person Specification Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience PhD or postgraduate qualification in genetics/genomics or related discipline. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with the ability to deliver presentations, address senior staff and present written reports and high level internal and external communications.

6 The ability to show initiative to identify and develop creative solutions to problems and challenges. Demonstrable experience of working autonomously when necessary as well as being a cooperative team member. Highly developed interpersonal skills necessary to build and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of staff including senior academic and administrative colleagues within and beyond the University. Considerable experience of seeking out and establishing networks and contacts to drive forward initiatives within and outside of the University The ability to prioritise effectively and undertake a demanding and diverse programme of work to meet set deadlines.
