1 MASTERS OF FINE ARTS IN CREATIVE WRITING (MFA) EMPHASIS NONFICTION FICTION POETRY WRITING FOR SCREEN AND TELEVISION PLAYWRITING
2 CREATIVE WRITING MFA FOR WORKING PROFESSIONALS Our Masters of Fine Arts program trains passionate and talented writers who intend to make writing their profession and supports them in crafting work of publishable quality. The MFA offers a crossgenre curriculum in fiction, nonfiction, screenwriting, poetry and playwriting, allowing you to explore more than one creative path. Complementary electives in cultural studies, history and literature provide an enriching foundation and background for writers at all levels. LIBERAL ARTS INTEGRATION To be a writer is to look deeply into the human condition. To see the human heart is to witness multicultural reality, young and old, woman and man. To recognize all those facets of being, and to put them into words, you begin in the liberal arts. We believe that a foundation in literary and intellectual history, a knowledge of sister arts such as film and architecture, and skill in reasoning are essential qualities of any artist of the word. To that end, we require our students to take electives in our Humanities and Film, Television & Photography programs. WRITING EVENTS & ENRICHMENTS We host a Visiting Writers Series, featuring such well-regarded writers as Otessa Moshfeigh and Geoff Dyer. We also have a student-edited literary magazine and an annual literary conference. BILINGUAL STUDY To reflect the cultural diversity of our Los Angeles location, we created this unique program that allows you to take courses in both English and Spanish, and complete your culminating thesis in Spanish. Latino writers frequently visit campus to give readings and talks. CONVENIENT, BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS IN THE HEART OF LOS ANGELES Our Doheny Campus is located in the historic West Adams District in downtown Los Angeles, with easy access from both the 10 and 110 Freeways, and with ample student parking. Originally a gated Victorian estate, our campus is beautifully landscaped with tall trees and sweeping gardens, and is dotted with elegant mansions. It is a peaceful and inspiring haven for future writers. CONVENIENT WEEKEND & ONLINE FORMAT Designed for working professionals, our program offers students the flexibility to enroll in either online or on-campus courses, or both! On-campus class sessions meet every other weekend, for a total of six intensive weekends, at our downtown campus. Students attend classes all day Saturday and half a day on Sunday. Regardless of format, all full-time students enroll in two courses each semester and graduate in two years. A CULMINATING THESIS In the final semesters, students work independently with a faculty advisor and complete a thesis a substantial work of fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, screenwriting or television writing. The creative thesis is intended to demonstrate your readiness for a professional career in writing.
3 RODRIGO RIBERA D EBRE 17 Current Position: Writer/Director Career Goals: To publish, teach and work as an editor I ve discovered a great deal about myself and my writing at MSMU. I learned what my work was really about, and its relevance to the larger American conversation. I sharpened my skills, making my work leaner, tighter and reflective of who I am. I also now know how to push my narratives forward without holding back and without apologies. I learned how to start my narratives strong and end unconventionally. Before joining the MFA program, I had no community of writers, but now I ve developed some good friendships with fellow writers whom I trust. Workshops have helped me develop a thicker skin and take critique with optimism. FOCUS LEARNING In every class, I looked for the most important thing to learn: strong beginnings and endings, for example, or voice. EMPATHY I approach my career with discipline and determination. When I participate in Q&As and panels, I give 100% to the subject matter and strive for empathy and understanding for the human condition via the arts. AWARENESS Mount Saint Mary s helped my approach by contributing to the knowledge, skills and abilities in my work, and the aptitude to analyze fiction, nonfiction and film through a broader lens of global awareness.
4 SHARON CLEVELAND BLOUNT 18 Career Goal: To earn a living solely as a writer I want to travel the world as a gourmand enjoying culinary experiences and conveying those experiences to others as a blogger, influencer or writing for a travel or food publication. I also have my eyes set on film, television and playwriting. The Creative Writing program offers such a buffet of writing options, so why should I limit myself? Also, here I am exposing myself to the literary community on a much larger scale than ever before. I have developed a tremendous pool of resourceful, encouraging and supportive peers whom I can count on to give me honest feedback and whom I can be transparent with as I pursue writing. DISCIPLINE I now take my writing more seriously. It s a job. I wake up and I write as if I were going to work. I ve learned to write every day, developing and strengthening the writing muscle within me. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS The MFA in Creative Writing Program culminates in a terminal degree that qualifies the holder to teach at the college level. The program has given me the chance to be in an environment in which I get to practice my craft and the encouragement to write and pursue my career goals no matter what. VISION You never know what will happen until you try something. I ve taken classes in novel writing, nonfiction essays and the short story. In each, I ve stepped outside my comfort zone. Result?
