Dual Credit - Student and Parent Interest Meeting 7 Is Dual Credit the Right Choice for Me? Expectations for College What is expected of college students varies greatly from what is expected of high school students. Students who take dual credit courses are beginning their college career. This is a serious commitment and should only be entered into by those who are ready to be committed to college-level work. Dual Credit students will be academically challenged in a college setting. Courses are rigorous. Students and parents should discuss the level of commitment needed in regards to their high school course load and extra-curricular activities. Must exhibit maturity and social behavior necessary to be enrolled in a college level course Remember!!! Dual credit classes become part of your permanent college transcript and impact eligibility for financial aid and scholarships!

Dual Credit - Student and Parent Interest Meeting 8 How Does it Work? Students typically take two courses in the fall, and two in the spring term. Special approval is needed to take more than two dual credit courses per term. Dual credit grades become part of the student s high school and college permanent academic records High School Transcript A grade of C or better is required to receive high school credit. College Transcript Students can graduate from high school with up to 24+ hours of college credit. More hours can be earned by taking summer courses. Students enjoy the convenience of taking SJC dual credit courses within their high school daytime schedule.

Dual Credit - Student and Parent Interest Meeting 9 Types of Dual Credit Courses ACADEMIC Courses (Texas Core Curriculum) typically transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Core courses meet the general education or free elective requirements of an undergraduate degree program Students taking these courses often plan to pursue a four-year degree after high school graduation. WORKFORCE (CAREER & TECHNICAL) Courses may or may not transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Students taking these courses often plan to enroll in a certificate or twoyear degree program. Helps students become employable upon high school graduation. Workforce Programs: Process Technology (PTAC), Instrumentation, Child Development, Cosmetology, and Welding. Course offerings vary by high school. Each ISD determines the course options available for their students to earn college credit.

Dual Credit - Student and Parent Interest Meeting 12 FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) What is FERPA? The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of a students educational records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education. When a student turns 18 years old, or enrolls in an institution of higher learning at any age, all rights afforded to you as a parent under FERPA transfer to the student. As college students, dual credit participants are protected by FERPA law and their information cannot be disclosed. However, there are options for students who would like their parents to receive this information. A student may log in to their student account at any time to show the record of grades to a parent. SOS & Blackboard Accounts View an unofficial transcript, Order official transcripts for college/university applications Pay tuition and fees Print a degree evaluation, Check class schedule and final grades

Dual Credit - Student and Parent Interest Meeting 13 Communication & FERPA Student MUST communicate with the instructor. College Professors No Parent Conferences Additional College Personnel Department Chairs WILL NOT communicate with parents or the high school counselors due to FERPA guidelines ---the federal law prohibiting. High School and College Sharing Information: FERPA allows high schools and community colleges to share the educational records of dual credit students without the consent of either the parents or the student. Midterm and final grades are sent to the high schools.

Dual Credit - Student and Parent Interest Meeting 14 Academic Freedom ACADEMIC FREEDOM is practiced at all San Jacinto Colleges. Some of the topics covered in college courses may be controversial. College is a time for students to critically analyze information gathered through K-12 courses and confront questions without easy answers. College instructors will teach the same course material regardless if it is a dual credit course or has dual credit students in the course. Academic Freedom allows faculty and students to pursue whatever inquiry they feel is important and to speak about it in the classroom without fear of censorship. Understand that within a college environment, students may encounter adult language and images, different philosophical viewpoints and belief systems. Understand that appropriate and essential discipline specific terminology, concepts and principles are utilized as needed in the classroom setting.

Dual Credit - Student and Parent Interest Meeting 15 Student Rights & Responsibility Code of Student Conduct All high school students enrolled in college classes are held accountable to policies, rules, and regulations of the San Jacinto College District.
