8 PREFACE I sincerely feel that it is my supreme privilege to submit the Self Study Report (SSR) of our college to the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore for Cycle-I Accreditation. The preparation of this document has given a lot of information, knowledge, experience and exposure to our faculty who were seriously and sincerely involved in the process all along. The process resulted in introspection, consultation, exchange of views with the stakeholders and analysis of the existing Internal Quality System and a study of the growth of the institution after the second accreditation. All these inputs have been discussed thoroughly while preparing this document. The steering committee had a series of meetings to discuss the various ways and means to get the college accredited for the first time. Different sub-committees were formed and specific tasks and responsibilities were entrusted. The steering committee sought adequate information from all sub-committees, HODs and office staff. I am very much satisfied that I received all the required information well in time. I acknowledge the whole hearted involvement and co-operation of the Faculty members. 9 INTRODUCTION Hosapete is a famous historical and tourism center in Karnataka.It is biggest taluk head quarter in Ballari district, comprises of 64 villages. The heritage center Hampi is also situated in Hosapete Taluk. It is renowned for its iron ore mining and steel industries like JINADAL, KIRLOSKAR, KALYANI, KPTCL,BMMI,MSPL and SLRM. It provides better employable opportunities. Tungabhadra dam is a major multipurpose project established for the development of irrigation and power generation. ABOUT THE COLLEGE Shri. Shankar Anand Singh Government First Grade College, Hosapete (here after as SSASGFGCH) was established in the Academic year (vide order No.ED/144/yo.yo.ka/2007/Bangalore/Dt ) by the Government of Karnataka, started functioning from May 2007 temporarily at the premises of Municipal Government P.U. College, Chittawadigi, Hosapete. Classes were conducted in high school class rooms. With the efforts and struggle made by the local MLA, political leaders and various students organizations valuable land of 0.92 acres has been transferred to the Department of Higher Education by the Irrigation Department, Govt. of Karnataka to construct the college building in the year 2013.The foundation stone was laid by the former higher education minister Sri C.T.Ravi and MLA and CDC chairman Sri Anand Singh. Total estimated cost for the construction of the full pledged college building is Rs.6,28,02,000/-.Initially Government of Karnataka has sanctioned of Rs.200 lakhs for the construction of first phase of the building and local MLA has assured to donate 1/3 of the construction cost. The new building consisting of 14 class rooms including principal chamber, office room, staff room, computer lab,2 toilet blocks and other facilities has been completed by RITES and handed over to the department of collegiate education on 15 th February The former higher education minister Sri R.V.Deshapande inaugurated the building. The classes are conducting in the new building from February 2015 itself. The construction of the additional class rooms started in the year 24 th August 2015 with allocated fund of Rs. 150 lakhs by GOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKA. KRIDL (Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited) is constructing 5 class rooms and 2 laboratories with other facilities. The construction work is almost completed and yet to be handed over. This new building of the college is located in heart of the city and caters the needs of the students belonging to SC/ST and backward classes including the minority of the society and hailing from the rural areas. Among the students at present studying in this college nearly 50

10 % are girls students. The college has the motto to give higher education to these sections of sections of students in a better way. The first batch had 81 students and gradually the intake continued to increase in the consequent years.112 ( ), 172( ), 211( ), 252( ), 297( ), 320( ), 407( ), 633( ) and now the strength is 882 out of which, 427are female and 455 are male students. Thus the institution with in a short span of time has been able to attract a large number of students both local and neighboring rural areas and outside the taluk. At the beginning the college was affiliated to Gulbarga University, Gulbarga and from 2011 is affiliated to VSK University, Ballari. The courses offered in our institution are B.A, B.Com, and B.Sc. because of lack of admission B.B.M course was windup in B.Sc. course with combinations of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science (PMCs) has been introduced from this academic year. The performance of the students in the previous academic years is outstanding and their academic performance is commendable VISION: To provide the best teaching and learning atmosphere and enable all the sections of the society to impart higher education so as to emphasize on social justice. MISSION: To impart quality education that meets the needs of the present and engaging society. To provide a better environment for learning. To strive for student s achievement and success, preparing them for life and leadership. To participate in the advancement of knowledge. To maintain good relationship between students, parents, alumina, employersand the society. OBJECTIVES: To give more stress to student centred teaching. To achieve Gross Enrolment Ratio[GER] To improve overall quality development of the institution. To give special care to girl students by providing facilities and opportunities for their development. To create employment opportunities to the students through various programs and activities to enable them to acquire job skills.

11 The principal Dr.B.G.Kanakeshamurthy and dedicated teaching faculty and supportive staff works relentlessly for the development of the institution. Thus the college has got good rapport by the parents, public, students and stakeholders. Any educational institution can grow with perfection only in a disciplined atmosphere. The principal along with the support of the staff members do commendable job to maintain discipline. The team is vigilant to see the students are well dressed in neat uniforms and identity cards worn regularly. Use of mobile phones has been strictly prohibited and the students are regularly and meticulously checked for the same. The poor students Fund-Box is put in front of the entrance. The students who came late to the college voluntarily pay as token of penalty as they with. This type of actions always helps them for their overall development in a positive way.

12 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY CRITERION-I: CURRICULAR ASPECTS Shri Shankar Anand Singh Government First Grade College, Hosapete follow the curriculum prescribed by the VSK University Bellary. The institution offers 3 UG programmes (B.A B.com and B.Sc) affiliated to VSK University Bellary and follow the semester scheme pattern. The university revises the syllabus as and when required and we follow its curriculum strictly. In the year VSK university revised the UG syllabus and in UG Kannada language & optional syllabus has been revised and implemented. The college provides admission to UG courses according to the rules and regularities formed by Government of Karnataka and VSK University, Bellary. All programmes are financed by dept. of collegiate education, Government of Karnataka. The credit based semester system gives credit to co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. College provides an opportunity to the students to participate in NSS, Sports, Red Cross, Rangers/Rovers and cultural activities. In order to meet the requirement of the present days B.Sc. (P.M.Cs) has been introduced in the present academic year ( ) The faculty members of the college have enhanced their pedagogical skills through the participation in national and international conferences, semester, workshops, refreshers orientation courses. Dr.B.G.kanakeshmurthy have represented as member of BOS (test book committee) of VSK University and edited one UG text-book for the academic year CRITERION II: TEACHING LEARNING AND EVALUATION:- The institution caters to the needs of both rural and urban students. It follow the guidelines of the Govt.of Karnataka and VSK University for admissions. It provides access to higher education to all sections of the society viz, economically backward and disadvantaged communicates, gender and differently abled. The admission process in very transparent, wide publicity is being givens for admission process. The college forms admission committee every year and scrutinizes all admission applications. Recently the department of collegiate education, GOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKA/VSK University has implemented the online admission process to bring in transparency. The institution plans and organizes teaching, learning and evaluation schedules. Every year at the beginning the college draws academic calendar and maintains academic events and co-curricular activities. Internal assessments/test

13 are conducted regularly to evaluate the students. In each and every year more than 180days of teaching is being carried out to facilitate intensive coverage of syllabus. The teaching learning covers remedial coaching, tutorials, special support to slow as well as advanced learners, field work, projects, seminars, power point presentations, group discussions are some of the methods adopted by the faculty for vibrant learning culture of the students. Innovative teaching methods, regular EDUTEL programmes and ICT enabled learning, have added color to their learning. IQAC plays a vital role in organizing special lectures, seminars and workshops for the benefit of both teacher and students to improve the teaching- learning activity in the college. At the end of every year lecturers are evaluated by the students through proper feedback. That will be analyzed by the principal. The activities of teaching learning are evaluated. The college library has subscribed two national and international research journals. CRITERION III: RESEARCH, EXTENSION AND COLLABORATION:- The college has constituted research committee to motivate the staff members to involve in active research. At present out of 9 permanent teaching faculties including principal 5 members have awarded PhD degree and two members pursuing Ph.D. Among 24 guest faculties 6 members have Ph.D., degree. Faculty members have presented research based papers in national and international seminars, workshops and published their articles in ISBN/ISSN publications. Students are also motivated to write innovative articles in the college wall paper. The concept of Extension activity is well perceived by the institution and renders a greater service to the community through NSS, youth Red Cross and Ranger Units. Through these units activities like health checkup, blood donation, voter awareness and Swach Bhart Abhiyan, Relief Fund rising programmes are conducted. CRITERION IV: INFRASTRUCTURE AND LEARNING RESOURCES Our College is situated in the heart of the city and has 0.92 acres of land transferred by irrigation department to DCE in which the construction of first phase consisting of 14 rooms is completed and additional 5 class rooms and 2 labs are under construction. The front

14 area of the building fulfils the minimum needs of the students in which Kabaddi, Ball badminton are being played. At present 882 students are enrolled for BA, B.Com and B.Sc. courses. The college has 12 class rooms a computer lab, staff room, office room; Library with INFLIBNET, Internet facility. All the proceedings and programmes are uploaded on the college web site ( and notice board to communicate with the students. Ramp facility is provided to physically challenged students. C.C. Camera is adapted in the office library, principal chamber, one of the in class rooms and main entrance of the college. 4 EDUTEL, ICT class rooms are available for computer aided teaching to enrich teaching and learning process. The college has two (2) (one from male and one for female) toilet blocks. Canteen and refreshments are available within 100 meters around the campus. CRITERION- V: STUDENT SUPPORT AND PROGRESSION Over the period of five years, the college has obtained good results in all the courses. Considerable number of students have secured distinction and first classes. Efforts have been made to minimize dropout rate and to maximize benefits to extend number of students. Financial assistance in the form of scholarship/fee concessions is given to students with an intention that no students discontinue his/her studies due to financial constraints. More than 50% of students receive scholarships. Co-curricular and Extracurricular activates like care of overall improvement of students. Sports and games, two NSS units, Ranger, Youth Red cross units and Red Ribbon Club, student counseling cell, PUSTAKA PREMI VIDYARTHI BALAGA, commerce forum, placement and career guidance cell, grievance cell, committee against sexual Harassment (CASH) woman Empowerment Cell, promotes the growth of the students. Parent Teacher Association, Alumni establishes a healthy relationship between the college, parents and students community. Their feedbacks are highly appreciated. Complaint/suggestion box is provided to express student s opinions. Pure drinking water facility, Xerox facility is provided to students. In order to provide special coaching EDUTEL facility has been introduced since Students regularly watch that programme with a definite time table. CRITERION VI: GOVERNANCE AND LEADERSHIP

15 The main components of an effective governance system may be decentralization, transparency, team work, leadership and good communication network. Automation of office processes, HRMS, online processes support efficient governance. The principal is managing authority of the college monitored by Department of Collegiate Education, GOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKA. He manages both academic and administrative matters. The IQAC plays an important role. Various committees are formed to achieve desired results in the area of academic, administrative and financial management. The college advisory council meets regularly to distribute funds collected by CDF and department on preferential basis. Effective utilization of resources is achieved through financial transparency, inspections and through audit. Grievances are heard and appropriate actions are initiated to achieve conducive environment. The appointment, transfer of faculty is wholly done by the DCE. The college is bound to comply with the rules and regulations of the Government of Karnataka for various financial and administrative aspects. The principal and faculty puts efforts to communicate with higher authorities and donors related to the infrastructure and other needs of the college and properly utilize the funds for overall development of the institution. CRITERION-VII: INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES The IQAC of the college brings qualitative changes in the area of academic ambience through quality management strategies. The college has set a goal of overall development of student community. In order to fulfill social responsibility of the institution a variety of development programmes are conducted through NSS Youth Red Cross, Red Ribbon, Ranger and IQAC cell etc. the innovative practices have created a new learning space to the students. Best practices on the one hand have improved the overall performances of the students and on the other, have resulted in avoiding wastage of resources and best utilization of available time in co-curricular activates. Strength: SWOC Analysis 1) The college has its own newly constructed building in 0.92 acres located in the heart of the Hospet city. The very location of this institution is very convenient to the students with a number of banks, hospitals and post office around it.

16 2) Number of intake of students to UG courses is increasing year by year. 3) The college offers co-education, the ration of male and female students is almost 50:50[Male-455: Female-427]. 4) Well-furnished class rooms with good ventilation, lights, fans and ICT facility for 4 class rooms. 5) Good library facility with 9374 books with 1070 titles and references, INFLIBNET web library facility. 6) Highly qualified dedicated permanent and guest faculty with M.Phil., Ph.D., NET/SLET/JRFs. 7) Well-disciplined student community is also more active in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. They are encouraged by the faculty. 8) The college has various committees to take care of student s needs. 9) The college has CDC (College Development Council) and good Alumni support for academic and co-curricular activities. 10) Good reputation and positive opinion about the institution among public and the stakeholders. Weaknesses: 1) Lack of ministerial staff. 2) Poor communication skills in English language among the students. 3) Insufficient funds to organize more innovative training programmes. Opportunities: 1) More scope for higher studies like PG and research activities in nearby universities like VSK University, Bellary and Kannada University, Hampi. 2) Scope for having new and innovative courses having subjects like Journalism, Tourism and Textile. 3) More employment opportunities in the areas like mining, tourism, farming, fisheries and animal husbandry. 4) Involvement of local industries, educationists and donors in strengthening the institution. 5) Enhancing performance of under-privileged students by innovative teaching practices. 6) SC/ST/OBC and physically challenged students can get more financial assistance from central and state government and other agencies. 7) Entrepreneurship development center to cater the needs of the entrepreneurs. 8) Library upgradation to meet the current and future requirements of the students.

17 9) Faculty Development Programmes for enhancement of quality education through training and knowledge up-gradation of faculty and staff. Challenges: 1) To compete with local well established colleges. 2) To train-up students in communication skills in English. 3) To prevent the students from the adverse effects of media. 4) To achieve academic excellence. 27 CRITERIONI:CURRICULARASPECTS 1.1 Curriculum Planning and Implementation Curricular planning and implementation is designed by the university and implemented by the college. Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ballari designs the syllabus and the college prepares the academic calendar independently in co-ordination with academic calendar of the university so as to implement and execute the prescribed syllabus State the vision, mission and objectives of the institution, and describe how these are communicated to the students, teachers, staff and other stake holders. VISION: To provide the best teaching and learning atmosphere and enable all the sections of the society to impart higher education so as to emphasize on social justice. MISSION: To impart quality education that meets the needs of the Present and engaging society. To provide a better environment for learning. To strive for student s achievement and success, preparing them for life and leadership. To participate in the advancement of knowledge. To maintain good relationship between students, parents, alumni, employers and the society. OBJECTIVES: To give more stress to student centred teaching. To achieve Gross Enrolment Ratio[GER] To improve overall quality development of the institution. To give special care to girl students by providing facilities and opportunities for their development. To create employment opportunities to the students through various programs and activities to enable them to acquire job skills. The planning, execution and the functioning activities of the institution revolves around the vision, mission and the objectives which are effectively conveyed to all the students, staff and other stakeholders of the college. The staffs who guide the students participate actively. Develops action plans for effective implementation of the curriculum. Before the commencement of the semester a general time table for the institution is prepared by the time

28 table committee in consideration with the weakly hour allotment for each curriculum as specified by the affiliating university. The heads of various departments ensure the allotment of hours according to the university stipulation. In the beginning of the academic year the orientation programme for the fresher s is conducted by the various department faculty members so as to give the bird view of the college under the Internal Quality Assurance cell. Through orientation students are enabled to familiarize with the facilities like library, sports, NSS, Rangers/Rowers, Red Cross and other extensive activities that the college provides them. The curriculum delivery is done through lectures, special coaching classes, remedial teaching, guest lectures, interaction programmes, seminars and group discussions along with providing the course materials to the students to help them achieve good results. In addition, curriculum process is supplemented by the assignments, surprise tests and routine internal assessments and periodical tests How does the institution develop and deploy action plans for effective implementation of the curriculum? Give details of the process and substantiate through specific example(s). As an affiliated college, the curriculum designed by the VSKU is followed. The university frames the academic calendar that specifies the duration of the semester /session, the date of commencement of semester/session, the end of the semester /session and specific number of working days. The college meticulously develops action plans for effective implementation of the curriculum. Before the commencement of the curriculum a general time table for the institution is prepared by the time table committee considering the weakly hour allotment for each curriculum as specified by the affiliating university. The Heads of the Departments ensure the allotment of hours according to the university stipulations What type of support (procedural and practical) do the teachers receive (from the University and /or institution)for effectively translating the curriculum and improving teaching practices? College follows the syllabus of VSKU Ballari. The Vision Mission and Objectives of the institution are given due consideration while tracing the curriculum. College has developed a strong support mechanism for the benefit of the teachers to enable them to implement the curriculum and improve the teaching practices.

29 VSKU organizes workshops to the teachers regarding the up-gradation of the syllabus. Faculty members of the college are deputed to the university BOS and BOE along with Orientation and Refresher courses organized by the UGC HRDC. Teachers empowerment training and other short term academic workshops, symposiums and trainings are conducted by the universities to enrich teaching faculty to the current trends. Research activities such as guiding M.Phil. and Ph.D. students, contributing articles in national and international research journals, motivation to take part in various state, national and international seminars and encourages the faculty for mutual benefit Specify the initiatives taken up or contribution made by the institution for effective curriculum delivery and transaction in the curriculum provided by the affiliating University or other statutory agency. Initiative is taken up to provide syllabus for students through library and college website. In addition to the conventional mode of teaching, assignments, project works, visit to heritage sites, industrial and educational tours, and so on are adopted and implemented. Sincere efforts are put down to complete the prescribed syllabus in time. College also provides book bank and INFLIBNET facility to the students along with organizing special lectures by the resource persons. Inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary interaction programmes are frequently organized by the college How does the institution network and interact with beneficiaries such as industry, research bodies and the University in effective operationalization of the curriculum? The institution frames the CDC in consultation and consent of the Honorable District in charge minister having the sitting MLA as its chairman. This is done in accordance with the DCE guidelines. CDC comprises of the members from various fields of the society who have contributed to the areas such as academics, commerce, industry, social service and politics. With regard to the research activities, as of now though the university does not have direct access with research promoting agencies, still research scholars, experts and resource persons from the reputed institutions are invited for workshops, special lecture programmes to motivate the students and enhance the teacher s skills. Among the 12 faculty members of our college working in different departments, four have Doctoral degrees to their credit and

30 two of them have secured guide ship and have successfully supervised around 20 M.Phil. and two Ph.D. Scholars. Presently three of our faculty members are pursuing Doctoral degree Faculty supervise the preparation and submission of Project Reports which form the integral part of BBM and B.Com degrees. As members of various committees framed by the affiliated university, such as BOS and BOE our staff members contribute significantly and share the knowledge imparted while transacting with the society and interacting with the corporate world in contrast with the prevalent trends. They are even well-equipped to deliver special lectures and are invited as resource persons to many a reputed institutions and agencies What are the contributions of the institution and /or its staff members to the development of the curriculum by the University?(number of staff members/departments represented on the Board of Studies, student feedback, teacher feedback, stakeholder feedback provided, specific suggestions etc. Our institution is an affiliated college, and there-by follows the curriculum provided by Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University. Our staff continuously contribute their bit, while at the time of their participation in the workshops regarding syllabus up gradation. Four of our faculty members(dr.b.g.kanakeshamurthy, Associate Professor of Kannada, Dr.K.Siddappa, Assistant Professor of Economics, Dr.Kurubara Venkatesh,Assistant Professor of Political Science, T.H.Basavaraja, Assistant Professor of English) are the part of the Board of Studies (BOS) and Chairman of BOE of VSKUniversity, Ballari and in one of the SSA Government First Grade autonomous college, Ballari. Students feedback is drawn quite often from the opinions generated in students-teachers, parents-teachers meetings. Teachers feedback will be recorded in the staff meetings. Considering the outcome of the said meetings, essential modification, required inclusion and deletions to the syllabus are conveyed through the BOS members. 31 1.1.8 How does institution analyze /ensure that the stated objectives of curriculum are achieved in the course of implementation? Curriculum is designed by the affiliating university for three of the courses that our college offers. College administration monitors the implementation of the syllabus. The faculty members interpret and analyze the curriculum in relation to their subjects. The lesson plan is designed and students are taught according to the plan all through the course. One of the objectives of the curriculum is to enrich and motivate the students so as to find opportunities in the fields of business and entrepreneurship, science, administration, research and consultation. Along with the curriculum students are taught and made to inculcate moral values, ethics, courage, leadership qualities, empowerment of women and the upliftment of the socially deprived classes. In addition, every student is promoted to create his/her personality in social perspective through which they are exposed to social responsibility and employability. 1.2 Academic flexibility Specify the goals and objectives give details of the certificate/diploma /skill development courses etc. offered by the institution. Special coaching for general knowledge and mental aptitude. Hosahejje and Angla & Vikasana( 60 hours of duration each) which are articulated by the Department Of Collegiate Education in Karnataka. Live conference programs like Edu-sat and Tele-education in particular are conducted with utmost sincerity for the reason that these programs ensure the students to acquire social skills, soft skills and personality development.
