It was my goal to bring together the surgery staff and medical students to broaden students' knowledge of surgery, to offer resources dedicated to the promotion of surgery, and to bridge the communication gap that exists between students and practicing surgeons. The organization is now one of the largest student-run organizations at the. We have put together suture clinics, OR etiquette courses, have developed a shadowing program between students and practicing surgeons, and have volunteered for many community service projects. We have previously seen that hypoxia results in rapid increases in leukocyte-endothelial adhesive interactions and increased vascular permeability in various organs. The mechanism of this response involves generation of reactive oxidants, which could potentially promote injury by inactivation of nitric oxide. We have recently developed a method using a fluorescent probe (DAF-2) to measure nitric oxide levels during hypoxia in vivo. This particular project should add to our understanding of microvascular responses to hypoxia.
