1 18 THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION A STUDY OF THE TYPES OF PROBLEMS INVESTIGATED BY GRADUATE STUDENTS IN ANIMAL HUSBANDRY AND THE OCCUPATIONS IN WHICH THE RECIPIENTS OF ADVANCED DEGREES ENGAGE 1 RALPH W. PHILLIPS AND FREDERICK N. ANDREWS 8 Massachusetts State College INTRODUCTION A trend towards specialization has been common to all branches of science. When one considers the changes that have taken place since the beginnings of agricultural college and expriment station work the extent to which agriculture has become a specialized science, or group of sciences, is evident. The field that was once represented by the versatile Professor of Agriculture is now divided into a large number of specialized departments. Each department is divided still further with men specializing in the various phases of its work. In Animal Husbandry Departments, for example, one finds men specializing in livestock management and production, nutrition, meats, and breeding, or in some further subdivided phase of these divisions. In some institutions separate departments of Dairy and Poultry Husbandry are maintained, while problems dealing with animal pathology and livestock marketing are carried on mostly by Departments of Veterinary Science and Agricultural Economics. This increasing specialization has been a natural sequence of the advance in knowledge that has taken place since the beginning of agricultural college work. As the work of the scientist becomes more specialized a more thorough training is necessary. The graduate school has developed as the logical means of providing this training. Advanced degrees are more in demand today as prerequisites for positions because of the training they represent. In view of the increasing emphasis on graduate work the study herein reported was made to determine the types of problems that have been investigated by graduate students in animal husbandry and the occupations they engaged in after receiving their degrees. This information should be of interest and value to those responsible for the planning of programs of graduate study in animal husbandry, to advisors of graduate and prospective graduate students, and to the students themselves. 1 Contribution No. 83 of the Massachusetts Agricultural Experiment Station, Amherst, Massachusetts. Now at the U. S. Animal Husbandry Experiment Station, Beltsville, Maryland. Now with the Animal Husbandry Department, University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri.
2 THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION 183 MATERIALS The Animal Husbandry Departments of the Land-Grant Colleges were asked to supply data concerning the students to which advanced degrees were granted during the years 190 to 1934 inclusive. Information was received from institutions in the following forty states. Alabama Maine Oklahoma Arizona Maryland Oregon Arkansas MassachusettS Rhode Island Colorado Minnesota South Carolina Connecticut Missouri South Dakota Delaware Nebraska Tennessee Florida New Hampshire Texas Georgia New Jersey Utah Idaho New Mexico Vermont Illinois New York Virginia Indiana North Carolina Washington Iowa North Dakota West Virginia Kansas Ohio Wisconsin Wyoming During these fifteen years 31 of these institutions reported the granting of advanced degrees, 9 of them granting Master's and 10 granting Doctor's degrees. The subject matter included under Animal Husbandry varies with different institutions. The departments that were asked to supply data are those listed by Agnew ( ) 1 as Animal Husbandry, Animal Industry or Animal Production, and two departments listed as Animal and Dairy Husbandry, and Animal and Poultry Husbandry, respectively. Data concerning graduate students majoring in dairy or poultry were included in this study only where these subjects are included in the same department with other animal husbandry work. The data given in this paper include most of the degrees granted at the institutions listed. In a few cases complete data could not be obtained, therefore the number of degrees listed is slightly less than the total granted. DATA AND DISCUSSION The amount and nature of the graduate work in animal husbandry offered in the Land-Grant Colleges vary with the size of the department, the equipment available, the training and interests of the staff, the funds available for research, the demands for 1 Agnew' M.A. Workers in Subjects Pertaining to Agriculture in Land- Grant Colleges and Experiment Stations. 3 184 THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION graduate work, and other factors. No reference is made herein to the relative amounts and types of graduate work offered at the various institutions. The object of this paper is to present a picture of the entire field rather than to compare institutions. The thirty-one institutions reported on 508 Master's and 58 Doctor's degrees granted from 190 to The distribution of these degrees by years is shown in Table 1. The types of problems investigated by graduate students are shown in Table. The subject matter groupings used are those into which the various phases of animal husbandry work have generally been classified with such sub-classes as the nature of the data permitted. Problems in nutrition have been divided into two groups; those dealing with practical feeding problems and those dealing with more specific subjects such as vitamins and minerals. TABLE 1. Totals Theses dealing with wool, growth studies, pathology, marketing, and livestock history have been placed in separate classifications because they do not fit definitely into any of the other groups, i. e., management and production, feeding, nutrition, breeding, and meats. Researches dealing with pathology and marketing are most commonly carried on by departments other than Animal Husbandry, therefore few theses are listed dealing with these important subjects. The theses were divided into subject matter groups on the basis

5 186 THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION paper and others lent themselves to various interpretations. However, it is felt that the number of errors in classification was small. The percentages of theses falling in the various subject matter groups are shown in Table 3. It will be noted that management and production, and feeding are the subjects under which the greatest proportion of Master's theses were classified. These two groups include 46.1 percent of the total number. Nutrition and breeding rank next with 17.5 and 1.6 percent, respectively. These four classes include 76. percent of the total number. TABLE 3. Types of problems investigated by graduate students in animal husbandry, percentages. Growth studies rank third with 8.6 percent. The nutrition, breeding and growth classes include 77.5 percent of the subjects of Doctor's theses. If feeding and nutrition are combined we find that 43.3 percent of the Master's and 50.0 percent of the Doctor's theses dealt with these problems. The occupations in which students engage after receiving their degrees are shown in Table 4. The number and percentage in each group are shown. Each man is listed under the occupation in which he was engaged at the time the study was made. Some men were just out of graduate school while others had been out for a number of years, some undoubtedly having held one or more positions before their present one. There is some duplication because
6 THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION 187 many of those listed in the Doctor's degree group had also received their Master's degrees. For example, many of the 31 students receiving Doctor's degrees that are listed as being engaged in College and Experiment Station work are also included in the 147 who received Master's degrees. State College and Experiment Station work is the field into which the greatest number of men have gone; 8.9 percent of the men receiving Master's, and 53.4 percent of the men receiving Doctor's degrees entered this field. The first four of the occupations listed in Table 4 require an animal husbandry training. These are College and Experiment TABLE 4. 7 188 THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ANIMAL PRODUCTION these occupations. The next ten occupations are in the agricultural field but a specialized training in animal husbandry is not usually considered a prerequisite for them. This group includes 30.9 percent of the men receiving Master's and 4. percent of the men receiving Doctor's degrees. Of the men receiving Master's degrees, 1.8 percent were continuing graduate study, and 1.8 percent had died. This leaves 9.3 percent of the men receiving Master's and 1.1 percent of the men receiving Doctor's degrees that are employed in fields other than agriculture, or for which no occupation was reported. 1.4 percent of the occupations in the Master's degree group and 3.4 percent of those in the Doctor's group are listed under the heading "not reported." In most of these cases the occupations were not known to the departments supplying the data. It would seem probable that most of these were unknown because they were no longer associated with professional animal husbandry work. CONCLUSION The data presented in this paper show the types of problems upon which theses submitted for advanced degrees in animal husbandry have been based, and the occupations in which the recipients of advanced degrees during the years 190 to 1934 are engaged. Forty of the Animal Husbandry Departments in Land- Grant Colleges supplied information and 31 of these granted advanced degrees during this period. Totals of 508 Master's and 58 Doctor's degrees are included. This information is presented in the belief that it will be useful to the members of Animal Husbandry departments responsible for the planning and supervision of graduate work and to the students who plan to take work in this field. No detailed interpretations have been made. It is felt that these data will have their greatest value when interpreted by individual workers, departments, or students in relation to their specific conditions. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The authors wish to express their appreciation to the members of Anhnal Husbandry Departments who generously gave of their time and energies to supply the data upon which this study was based.
