State whether the programme/ department is accredited/ graded by other agencies. Give details. No 38. Detail any five Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Challenges (SWOC) of the department Strengths: i. Autonomy in framing syllabus ii. Favourable teacher student ratio :possibility of open interaction iii. Residential nature of the college iv. Rich library facility v. Active teaching assistance from monastic members Weakness: i. Majority of the incoming students do not have any prior concept of the subject as they come from the science stream

13 ii. Poor skill in English language of most of the students iii. Lack of motivation of a part of the students as the subject is chosen by them as the second best option iv. Unfilled posts in the faculty and too much dependence on part-timers Opportunities: i. Autonomous Status scope for modernization of syllabus ii. Close connection with the faculty of neighboring colleges- their assistance is available when required iii. Close contact with alumni scope of getting updated information about both academic and job related matters iv. Two of the administrative heads as members of the faculty Challenges: i. Encouraging students to develop both mathematical capability and command over language ii. To reverse the declining trend of student enrollment iii. To make the students aware of the fact that a variety of employment opportunities are available to them outside the traditional ones in the neoliberal regime iv. To overcome the problem of shortage of teaching staff 39. Future plans of the department: The department at present is suffering from an acute problem of shortage of staff. At present there are only two regular staff members two are-monastic members who cannot very naturally bear heavy load of classes. One of the two regular members is going to retire within a year. In this context it is difficult to make an effective future plan.now it is a challenge before the department to run the courses regularly. However, once the posts are filled effectively the Department can think in terms of introduction of some special areas of study. It may even think of introducing postgraduate course.
