2 Live Your DREAMS #LYDKlein Motor vehicle collisions are the number one cause of death among teens in the United States and most are preventable. Unfortunately, the number of motor vehicle traffic fatalities is on the rise in Texas. One of the most concerning areas in all of Texas for MVCs is the Greater Houston Area. Within the 25 districts of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the Houston district (which encompasses Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Montgomery and Waller counties) accounted for 27% of all Texas crashes in 2014, which is the largest percentage in the state among the districts. Memorial Hermann Live Your DREAMS program aims to reduce impaired and distracted driving among teens in the Houston district utilizing funding from TxDOT and Texas Trauma Institute. The Live Your DREAMS program uses strategies to reduce the initiation of teenage risky behavior, increase parent involvement and encourage peer-to peer interaction. The seriousness of poor choices will be portrayed in a two day event at Klein Oak High School on May 18 th and May 19 th. The 60+ member cast and crew will demonstrate the impact of poor decisions. On Wednesday May 18, with strong community support, Klein Oak High School has organized an additional element to the program, a mock-crash to demonstrate the physical and emotional consequences of driving under the influence or distracted. The activities throughout the day will reflect upon student s choices. Participants and other community advocates will speak on Thursday May 19 during two assemblies for the junior and senior class. There will be several emergency vehicles on campus on 5/18 as a part of the simulated car crash. Life Flight will also land in the bus parking lot. As a result, EARLY RELEASE students will need to park in the Freshman Wing parking lot. Klein Oak Road will also be closed 5/18 from 6:30am-12:00pm.

4 The ACT for all 11 th grade students has been rescheduled for Tuesday May 17. Students may check their room assignments in blackboard. If you are currently taking a dual credit course and you plan to take dual credit in the fall, please pick up a blue dual credit registration form in Room 202. This form is due MAY 20 th. If you are new to dual credit, you must have a qualifying TSI score from LoneStar University Park. It is recommended that you complete the test and have your scores turned in to your counselor before May 13 th. This will give you time to complete and return the blue form needed by May 20 th. Dual Credit courses are paid online through LoneStar. If you turn in your blue dual credit form by May 20 th, you will receive a registration receipt after May 24. The receipt will show your classes and payments must be completed before summer break begins. IMPORTANT UPDATES FOR CREDIT RECOVERY STUDENTS It has been announced that the students computers will be turned in as follows: May 24 for 10 th and 12 th grade and May 25 for 9 th and 11 th grade This means limited access to computers, even in credit recovery classes during the day, after May 23. Graduating seniors will get first access to classroom desktop computers through May th and 12 th graders- plan to finish your credit recovery courses by May th and 11 th graders- plan to finish your credit recovery courses by May 24. To help you reach your goal, please take advantage of ALL of the remaining after school credit recovery sessions: Mondays through Thursdays in Room 199 from 2:20/2:50 5:10 p.m. The last day of ASCR will be May 24. The last day for graduating seniors to finish credit recovery courses is Thursday, May 26.

5 Klein Oak English I teachers are wanting to start a readers choice program in their classes. They are in need of several books. We are asking for the books requested to be donated or for financial donations to purchase the books. This is a tax deductible donation and it helps our students become stronger readers and build a lifelong love of reading. All financial donations need to be made through the Klein Oak finance office. Checks can be made to Klein Oak High School. Please put readers choice in the memo line. A receipt will be provided for donations. If you are donating books please bring them to room 202 which is the upstairs assistant principal s office. If you have any questions please contact Frances Ditta at or fditta@kleinisd.net Final Transcripts for Seniors Colleges require a final transcript to prove you graduated from high school. Final transcripts will be mailed to the college/university of your choice during the third week of June. A request to mail your final transcript must be made by completing a FINAL TRANSCRIPT REQUEST FORM with the Registrar s Office. The cost of each transcript is $2.00. Final Transcript Request Forms will be available May 11 th. Requests received in the Registrars Office after June 16th will not be processed until early August. The Registrar s Office will be closed on June 21st through August 1st. Grandfathered Students for : Incoming 9 th Grade Students Based upon the re-zoning done in , current 8 th grade students who have a currently grandfathered sibling who will attend Klein Oak HS in the school year may choose to apply to also attend Klein Oak as through graduation. Applications for grandfathering an 8 th grader must be submitted by May 31, Each of the feeder middle school registrars have the School Choice for application to request to be grandfathered for Pick up the application and return it to your 8 th grader s middle school registrar. The 8 th grader s eligibility to be grandfathered will then be confirmed. Incoming 9 th grade students whose grandfathered sibling will NOT attend Klein Oak in (such as through graduation) are not eligible for grandfathering.

6 Attention seniors who live in Windrose. The Windrose Garden Club is offering a $750 scholarship to 2 students. 7 The Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminars take high school sophomores from the region, acting as ambassadors for their school, and help teach them leadership skills in order to make a positive impact on their schools, communities, and society in general. HOBY does this through guest speakers and panelists who talk about specific topics, student discussions, activities, and service projects. Last year, approximately 200 sophomores from the Texas Gulf Coast region participated in our HOBY seminar. Here are the dates and cost: Date(s): June Location: Texas A&M in Galveston (TAMUG). 8 Summer School Information KISD offers two summer school opportunities for our students: the Summer Credit Recovery Session in June, and Klein ISD Summer School in July. Klein Oak Summer Credit Recovery for Klein Oak students only Program Basics: Students retake failed courses for credit recovery through our Edgenuity system. Recovered credits are posted as P (pass) on their transcript. Most students can complete 2 or more semester courses. Students must attend all day each day until they have completed the prescribed courses. They may or may not need 10 days. 9 Online Summer Course Information Through the Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN), students may take an online course from home on a self-pay basis. Course costs range from $250 - $400 per semester course, depending on the course provider. On-level and AP courses are available. All Klein Oak students, including incoming 9 th graders, register at Klein Oak. Program Basics: Students take an online summer course with a set start and end date. They have assignment deadlines and communicate with their instructor throughout the course. A Klein ISD mentor also monitors their progress. They take a proctored final exam on campus at the end of the course. Upon completion, they earn numerical grades and grade points are awarded the same as similar KO courses.
