2 Faculty Certification of Credentials Form INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE FORM Category 1: Faculty Teaching Baccalaureate Courses If the faculty has an earned doctorate or master s degree in the teaching or master s degree with a concentration in the teaching (minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching ). Complete Sections 1, 2, 3 and 5 Category 2: Faculty Teaching and Post Baccalaureate If the faculty has an earned doctorate/terminal degree in the teaching or a related. Complete Sections 1, 2, 3 and 5 Category 3: Faculty Teaching Category 1 and/or Category 2 courses that do not have the above listed qualifications for either category but may be exceptionally qualified Complete Sections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. *Section 4 must be completed for each course that requires alternative justification or justification outside of those outlined in Categories 1 and 2. Section 1 Employee Information o Enter all information requested to include appropriate AAMU College, Department, Banner Number, etc. Section 2 Earned Degree Information o Enter Faculty Member earned graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) degree information. Only enter Undergraduate degree information if providing alternative qualifications and the undergraduate degree is being used as a part of the alternative qualification justification. o If the graduate degree is not within the, please attach either a copy of transcript(s) highlighting relevant graduate coursework (at least 18 hrs) or additional sheet showing graduate coursework taken within the. Faculty teaching baccalaureate courses: doctorate or master s degree in the teaching or master s degree with a concentration in the teaching (minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching ). c. Faculty teaching graduate and post baccalaureate course work: earned doctorate/terminal degree in the teaching or a related. d. teaching assistants: master s in the teaching or 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching, direct supervision by a faculty member experienced in the teaching, regular in service training, and planned and periodic evaluations. 5 SECTION 4: Alternative Qualifications ALTERNATIVE QUALIFICATIONS (Duplicate this form for each class that requires an Alternative Justification) Complete this section for all courses for which the faculty member is NOT degree or graduate semester hour (18 Hrs.) qualified according to the SACS COC Degree Guidelines (Faculty member has terminal degree in the course /teaching field or has a Master s degree and transcript shows 18 graduate semester credits in the course /teaching field). Please check all Additional Qualifications that apply, and explain each checked item in the space provided. Supporting documents such as vitae, transcripts, copies of licenses and certifications, etc. should be submitted with this form. 6 Standards for Alternative Justifications: Qualifying faculty to teach when they do not possess the normally expected education and work credentials is considered an unusual decision and is rarely done. Rather, most alternative justifications are simply reasoned explanations how the faculty member does indeed meet the standard qualifications listed above. Writing a Justificati In determining qualifications for specific teaching responsibilities, AAMU gives primary consideration to the faculty member s academic preparation as specified in the SACS COC guidelines for undergraduate and graduate courses. The University also considers other indicators of competence and effectiveness such as: Undergraduate and graduate degrees (in addition to the highest degree earned) including degrees closely related to the teaching field; Number of college credits earned in teaching field or closely related area; Documentation of non teaching work related experience in the field, including length of service, complexity of work performed to courses the faculty member would be eligible to teach; Reputation, especially at a state or national level. This must be demonstrated and documented; Professional licensure and certifications; Continuous documented excellence in teaching in other classes and at other institutions; Publications (related to the course ) other than through vanity presses; Possession of awards/honors/commendations; Verification of how training in the teaching field was achieved; Other competencies and achievements contributing to effective student learning outcome; Evidence of excellence in teaching, especially that which is long standing.
